UP police detain cleric Tauqeer Raza after Bareilly protest turns violent

Police on Saturday detained Tauqeer Raza Khan, a local cleric and chief of Ittehad-e-Millat Council, whose call for a protest supporting the 'I love Muhammad' campaign led to a violent clash between demonstrators and police after Friday prayers in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, officials said on Saturday. Tauqeer Raza has been taken into custody, and further legal proceedings are underway. The situation is peaceful and under control, Bareilly SSP Anurag Arya told the media. The detention followed a day of tension in Bareilly where a large crowd carrying I Love Muhammad' posters clashed with police outside a mosque in the Kotwali area after Friday prayers. The crowd was reportedly angry over the last-minute cancellation of a proposed demonstration called by Raza, who claimed the authorities denied permission for it. Over two dozen people were detained following the clash, which saw stone-pelting and vandalism. According to police sources, Raza released a video statement on Friday night

UP CM warns against law and order disruptions after Bareilly clashes

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday delivered a sharp rebuke following the clashes between police and locals in Bareilly on Friday, stating that the state government has sent a firm message that disruptions to law and order will not be tolerated. The comments, made while speaking at a 'Viksit UP' event of a media house, appear to be directed at cleric Tauqeer Raza Khan, chief of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, who had initially called for a protest in support of the "I Love Muhammad" campaign. "Yesterday, a Maulana forgot who is in power in the state," Adityanath said, without taking any names. "He thought he could halt the system whenever he wanted, but we made it clear that there would be neither a roadblock nor a curfew. However, the lesson we have taught will make future generations think twice before rioting," he said. The chief minister questioned the intent behind the public gathering. "What kind of way is this to halt the system? This was the trend in UP before 2017, b

Nepal unrest leaves UP border markets deserted, locals anxious over safety

As unrest continues in Nepal, Uttar Pradesh's border districts saw empty markets, with residents grappling with cancelled travel plans and severed family contacts across the frontier and many expressing concern over the disruption of their daily lives. In Bahraich's Rupaidiha town, which usually bustles with Nepali shoppers, markets have fallen silent. "Normally, our markets thrive because Nepali buyers come here for daily needs. But now, the markets are silent. Families on both sides are interlinked by marriages, so the unrest has left people here worried," said Dr Uma Shankar Vaishya, chairman of the local nagar panchayat. Locals said the temporary social media ban in Nepal had even cut off communication with relatives across the border. The restoration of WhatsApp and Facebook brought some relief, but anxiety persists. "People are very angry after the deaths during protests in Kathmandu. Schools are closed, markets shut, and demonstrations are intense in Nepalgunj too. The ...
