Jhansi medical college fire: Two more infants die, toll rises to 17

Two more infants rescued from a fire that ripped through the Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College here have died, taking the total toll in the blaze to 17, a senior official said on Sunday. Thirty-nine newborns were rescued from a devastating fire in the medical college hospital's neonatal intensive care unit on the night of November 15. Dr Narendra Singh Sengar, the medical college's principal, told PTI that of the 39 infants rescued, two more died on Saturday. While 10 babies died on the night of the fire, the remainder succumbed to their "illnesses", he said. A post-mortem of the two bodies was done on Saturday and the cause of death was confirmed as "illness" in both cases. The bodies have been handed over to the family members, Sengar said. The birth weight of both infants was 800 grams and one of them also had a hole in the heart, he added. The father of the Samajwadi Party's Sambhal MP is among 34 people "bound down" by the local administration over apprehensions of breach of peace following claims that a local Mughal-era mosque was originally the site of an ancient temple significant to the Hindu faith. The National Green Tribunal has been informed by the UP government's environment department that over 1.12 lakh trees will be felled in the protected forest area in the state to make way for the upcoming Kanwar Yatra route. The NGT had sought a reply from the secretary of the state's environment department in a case pertaining to the felling of more than 1 lakh trees and shrubs in the protected forest area. UP govt allots over 100 bigha land to all 13 akharas for Maha Kumbh 2025

Land allotment to all 13 'akharas' for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 area was on Tuesday completed, an official said here. Additional Mela Officer Vivek Chaturvedi said under the directives of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Kumbh Mela administration has allocated land for setting up camps for all 13 akharas with the consent of their saints. Three Vaishnav akharas Shri Panch Nirmohi Ani Akhara, Shri Digambar Ani Akhara and Shri Nirvani Ani Akhara were allotted land in the Akhara sector of the Kumbh area. Senior officials and saints from these akharas were present during the process. Mahant Murli Das, president of Shri Nirvani Ani Akhara, confirmed that the allocation was done amicably and preparations to secure the land with tin enclosures would begin soon, paving the way for further arrangements.
