EU must respond as one to Putin's 'blackmail': Greek PM Mitsotakis

The European Union should have a coordinated response to the challenge posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin's blackmail with the supply of natural gas, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Saturday. He said Putin's invasion of Ukraine is meant to "legitimise a despotic authoritarianism and enable any local troublemaker to do the same, a hardly veiled reference to Greece's neighbour Turkey and the increasingly aggressive rhetoric of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In the Ukraine war, we stand with those defending themselves, we stand with democracy and freedom...we know what it means to have an (aggressive) neighbour, Mitsotakis said. Putin wants to turn European anxiety about energy into political destabilisation, Mitsotakis added in the keynote speech at the Thessaloniki International Fair, in which Greece's heads of government announce the coming year's economic policies. The Greek premier reminded his audience that Greece had proposed months ago a cap on natural ga

Vladimir Putin is weaponising energy, alleges US after export cut threats

Russian President Vladimir Putin is weaponising energy, the White House has alleged, a day after he threatened to cut off all energy exports to the West if the US proceeded with its gas cap. Putin on Wednesday threatened to completely cut energy supplies to the West if it tries to cap prices of Russian exports. He also vowed to press on with Moscow's military action in Ukraine until it achieves its goals. This shows that Putin is, again, weaponising energy, by his very words, also by his actions. But the President (Joe Biden) and our partners in Europe predicted this playbook. We saw this coming, and we have been preparing for months. We have talked through the different processes of how this price cap could look, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Wednesday during her daily news conference. The US and European Union, she said, have set up a task force to work on ways to increase alternate sources of natural gas to Europe and help reduce Europe's demand for Russi

Putin, Xi to meet at SCO summit in Uzbekistan next week, says official

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet next week at a summit in Uzbekistan, a Russian official said Wednesday. The two leaders will meet at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, held in the Uzbek city of Samarkand on Sept. 15-16, Russian Ambassador to China Andrei Denisov told reporters. Less than 10 days from now another meeting of our leaders will take place at the SCO summit in Samarkand. We are actively preparing for it, Denisov was quoted by Russia's state news agency Tass as saying. The visit to Uzbekistan, if it goes ahead, will be Xi's first foreign trip in 2 years. Russian media also reported Xi's plans to visit Kazakhstan prior to the summit in Uzbekistan, but the reports have remained unconfirmed. When asked about the Uzbekistan trip, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a daily briefing Wednesday: On your question, I have nothing to offer. Why Chinese Prez Xi Jinping's Central Asia trip is important: An explainer

Chinese President and head of the ruling Communist Party Xi Jinping is expected to meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during a visit the neighbouring Central Asian nations of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan this month, in what would be his first overseas visits since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak in late 2019. Xi, 69, has participated in global gatherings by video link, but his physical absence and those of other top Chinese leaders has thrown a shadow over Beijing's global political and economic ambitions. Xi has only left mainland China to make a one-day visit to the semi-autonomous city of Hong Kong on July 1 to speak at a ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of its handover from British to Chinese rule. Xi has overseen a sweeping crackdown on civil rights in the city since pro-democracy protests in 2019, with opposition voices either imprisoned, forced into exile or intimidated into silence. According to Russian media, Xi will attend a summit of the Shanghai

Putin mocks West, says Russia will press on military action in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Moscow will press on with its military action in Ukraine until reaching its goals and mocked Western attempts to drive Russia into a corner with sanctions. Putin told at an annual economic forum in the far-eastern port city of Vladivostok that the main goal behind sending troops into Ukraine was protecting civilians in the east of that country after eight years of fighting. It wasn't us who started the military action, we are trying to put an end to it, Putin said, reaffirming his argument that he sent troops into Ukraine to protect Moscow-backed separatist regions in Ukraine, which have fought Ukrainian forces in the conflict that erupted in 2014 following Russia's annexation of Crimea. All our action has been aimed at helping people living in the Donbas, it's our duty and we will fulfill it until the end, he said. Putin charged that Russia has strengthened its sovereignty in the face of Western sanctions, which he said bordered

Putin attends joint military drill with China, others; shows military power

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday attended sweeping war games in his country's far east involving troops from China and other nations, in a show of military muscle amid the tensions with the West over Moscow's action in Ukraine. The weeklong exercise that began Thursday is intended to showcase growing defense ties between Russia and China and also demonstrate that Moscow has enough troops and equipment to conduct the massive drills even while its forces are engaged in fighting in Ukraine. The Russian Defense Ministry said that the Vostok 2022 (East 2022) exercise that runs until Wednesday at seven firing ranges in Russia's Far East and the Sea of Japan involves more than 50,000 troops and over 5,000 weapons units, including 140 aircraft and 60 warships. It engages troops from several ex-Soviet nations, China, India, Laos, Mongolia, Nicaragua and Syria. Beijing sent more than 2,000 troops along with more than 300 military vehicles, 21 combat aircraft and three warships to .
