Northern Army Commander meets J-K Governor

Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh on Friday met Governor Satya Pal Malik at Raj Bhavan and briefed him about the prevailing security situation in the state.As per an official statement, the two discussed certain important issues relating to effective internal security management.On March 19, Lt Gen Singh visited forward posts in Siachen Glacier and reviewed operational preparedness being maintained in the sector.Lt Gen Ranbir Singh interacted with the troops deployed at the forward posts and complimented them for their high morale.He also paid homage to the soldiers who lost their lives in Operation Meghdoot at the Siachen War Memorial.

UP PAC to get sophisticated weapons soon: ADG Binod Singh

The Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) will soon get sophisticated weapons, like submachine guns, a senior official said Friday. A recommendation for the weapons has been sent to the state government, Additional Director General (PAC) Binod Kumar Singh said. Addressing the personnel at the 41st PAC battalion campus in Vaishali, Singh said the constabulary must help build confidence among law abiding citizens. Singh said with changing times modern weapons were needed, especially to meet challenges posed by terrorists and during communal riots. He said submachine guns (MP5) would be a good addition for the force. At present the PAC personnel are given self-loading rifles. Anti-riot training will be given to PAC constables by National Security Guard-trained commandos, he said. Singh said 18,000 constables have been recruited and they will get training by the end of October.

BSF troops apprehend two drug smugglers in Assam

Two alleged drug smugglers were apprehended by BSF troops from near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam's Dhubri district, officials said Friday. Based on specific information, BSF troops posted in Patamari border outpost observed suspicious movements towards the international border taking advantage of dense foggy weather on Thursday, a BSF release said. Two women were challenged but they did not pay any heed and tried to cross the international border (IB), the release said, adding the two were apprehended by the troops before they could cross the IB along with 10,500 strips of contraceptive tablets. The two apprehended women were handed over to Dhubri police station for further legal action, it added.

Civilian injured after being shot at by militants in J-K's Tral

Militants Friday shot at a civilian and him in the Tral area of Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, police said here. Naseer Ahmad Ganaie, a resident of Nowpora in Tral, was shot at by the ultras outside his home, a police official said. He said Ganaie has been rushed to a hospital and a case was registered. "The officers are at the spot to establish circumstances of this terror crime," the official said. This is second incident of attack on civilian in Tral in as many days.

Armed forces will present in all West Bengal booths: CEO

Armed forces of either the Centre or the state would be present in every booth of the state during the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, state CEO Aariz Aftab said Friday. CCTVs and video cameras would also be there in critical and vulnerable polling stations, he said without mentioning the number of such booths. "Every booth of the state would be either have central or state armed forces. Micro-observers would also be present," Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Aariz Aftab told reporters here. On identification of sensitive and critical booths, he said the observers - general, police and expenditure - would have a say on this. The final call would be taken after consultation with district magistrates and superintendents of police and that would happen after all the observers arrive. Australia says Sri Lankan allegations should be investigated

An Australian envoy said Friday that its armed forces have no qualms about working with Sri Lankan security forces accused of grave human rights violations during the country's civil war, but added that the allegations must be taken seriously and investigated. Acting Ambassador John Philp said Australia wants to look to the future after the end of the war 10 years ago. "The approach we are taking is that we do want to work with the Sri Lankan tri-services. JeM terrorist Sajjad Khan sent to judicial custody till April 26

Patiala House Court on Friday sent Sajjad Khan, an alleged associate of Pulwama terror attack mastermind Mudassir Ahmed Khan, to judicial custody till April 26.Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Syal had earlier sent him to the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for seven days, till March 29.He was produced before the special court today at the end of the remand period. Taliban attacks target police, killing 17 : Afghan officials

Afghan officials say the latest Taliban attacks have killed 17 policemen across the country. Nik Mohammad Nazari, spokesman in northern Badakhshan province, says three policemen were killed on Friday in the district of Arghanj Khowa, where fighting is still underway. Provincial police chief Ghulam Daoud Tarakhil says the Taliban launched massive attacks in eastern Ghazni province, targeting two checkpoints on Thursday and killing nine policemen. Tarakhil says the Taliban were "defeated with heavy causalities" after hours of gunbattles. Deputy provincial council chief Asadullah Kakar says five policemen were killed in southeastern Zabul province's district of Shinkay on Thursday. Encounter ends in J-K's Budgam, search ops underway

The encounter that ensued between security forces and terrorists here in Sustu village in Budgam district has ended and search operations are underway, Jammu and Kashmir police said.According to the police, two terrorists were neutralised in the gunfight that broke out in the wee hours of Friday. Identities and affiliations of the terrorists are being ascertained.Four Indian Army personnel belonging to 50 Rashtriya Rifles also sustained injuries during the encounter.Meanwhile, Srinagar Police has issued an advisory requesting locals not to visit the encounter site as it is being sanitized and cleared by Bomb Disposal (BD) squad of Jammu and Kashmir Police.Further details are awaited.
