Four farmers were killed in an attack by Boko Haram insurgents in northeast Nigeria's Borno state, witnesses said here. The attack came a day after the jihadists killed three people in a raid in neighbouring Adamawa state. Fighters in trucks on Tuesday opened fire on the farmers as they worked in their fields outside Lassa village on the fringes of the group's Sambisa forest enclave. "We lost four of our kinsmen to Boko Haram who came around 2:00 pm (1300 GMT) yesterday and shot them dead in their farm outside the village," Adamu Galadima, a militia leader assisting the military to fight the Islamists, said Wednesday. "They (Boko Haram) tried to enter the village but our vigilantes mobilised and chased them away," he said. Veteran commander of Indian submarine in 1971 Bangladesh war, captain M N Samant, died of a cardiac arrest here on Wednesday, the Navy said. He was 89. Captain Samant was admitted to Arogya Nidhi Hospital in suburban Vile Parle. He was conferred with Maha Vir Chakra for his acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy. Nine people were injured, one of them critically, after naxals blew up a civilian vehicle using an improvised explosive device (IED) in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Wednesday, police said. The incident took place around 7.45 pm near Peddakodepal village when the victims were heading towards neighbouring Dantewada district in an SUV to visit a fair, Bijapur Superintendent of Police Govardhan Ram Thakur told PTI. "All the nine occupants, including the driver, of the vehicle were injured in the blast," he said. After being alerted, a police team rushed to the spot and admitted the injured people to a hospital, Thakur said, adding that the condition of one of them is reportedly serious. Police suspect that the rebels might have planned to target the security forces, whose movement has been intensified in view of the Lok Sabha elections, but mistakenly attacked the civilian vehicle.
An Army jawan allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself to death with his service rifle at the Infantry Brigade camp here while on duty, police said. Vishal Kumar P (25), from Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram district, allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday night, police said. The deceased hailed from Pangode village in Nedumangad taluka of Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram district, an official of Jamnagar A division police station said. "The jawan shot himself with his Insas service rifle while on duty at Army's Infantry Brigade military camp here at around 10.15 pm yesterday. Hearing the gunshot, people rushed to the spot only to find him dead," the official said. Police are trying to find out the reason behind his extreme step, he said. Sri Lanka on Wednesday rejected calls for setting up an international judicial mechanism to probe alleged human rights violations during the final phase of the conflict with the LTTE, saying constitutional challenges prevent foreigners from participating in the process. Unidentified men have looted Rs 3 lakh from an ATM in west Delhi, police said Wednesday. The incident occurred at Ranhola area on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. The suspected robbers came to an Indicash ATM, broke open the front panel and took Rs 3 lakh from it, a police officer said. A case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and an investigation is on. Police are checking the CCTV footage of the ATM and nearby areas, the officer said. Heavily armed Taliban militants attacked a remote security check post in Pakistan's restive Baluchistan province, killing at least six paramilitary personnel and wounding over a dozen others, an official said Wednesday.
