Robbers shot dead man in UP

A gang of robbers shot dead a man and thrashed his brother when they resisted an attempt to loot their house in Bareilly district in Uttar Pradesh, police said Wednesday. The gang entered the house in Baimyana village in the Bhamaura area on Tuesday night. As the family members raised an alarm, the gang shot dead Chaman (38) and thrashed his brother Naseemuddin (45), the police said. Naseemudding suffered injuries. On hearing gun shots, neighbours came out and nabbed two members of the gang, while the rest managed to flee. The duo, identified as Naved and Acchan, were handed over to the police. Attempts were on to nab other members of the gang, said Senior Superintendent of Police Muniraj.

Rs 50 lakh looted from bank officials in Patiala

Two unidentified men looted Rs 50 lakh cash from bank officials at Nabha in Punjab's Patiala district on Wednesday, police said. The incident took place around 11:25 am in Anaj Mandi branch of the nationalised bank in Nabha, where the officials had brought cash from the Patiala branch in a private vehicle, they said. The officials were attacked by two unidentified men riding a motorcycle when they were about to enter the Anaj mandi branch. The bag containing cash was snatched at gun point, police said, adding a security guard of the bank was injured after the miscreants open fired at him. Police is trying to nab the accused and have started a search operation in Nabha and adjoining areas, SSP, Patiala, Mandeep Singh Sidhu said.

3 men found guilty of Aus Christmas terror plot

Three young men have been found guilty of plotting terror attacks in Australia's second-largest city, intending to inflict mass casualties during the Christmas festive season. The court was told the men -- Hamza Abbas, 23, Ahmed Mohamed, 25 and Abdullah Chaarani, 27 -- bought machetes and ingredients to make homemade bombs, and wanted to target major Melbourne sites including a train station and a church. The verdict came as Australians were reeling from last Friday's Islamic State-inspired knife attack and attempted car bombing in Melbourne, which left two dead including the attacker. Hamza Abbas' older brother Ibrahim Abbas pleaded guilty earlier this year to the Christmas plot, which was to be carried out in December 2016. Taliban kill 12 Afghan security forces in separate attacks

Afghan officials say the Taliban have killed 12 members of the Afghan security forces, including nine soldiers who died in a battle in the Maidan Wardak province just outside the capital, Kabul. Hekmat Durani, spokesman for the provincial police chief, says the nine were killed in the Sayed Abad district, and that another three soldiers were wounded. He says five insurgents were killed in the exchange late Tuesday. Jawad Hajri, spokesman for the governor of the northeastern Takhar province, says the Taliban attacked police there, killing three and wounding another three. The Taliban, who in recent years have taken over nearly half the country, claimed both attacks.

Two Hizbul militants arrested

Security forces Wednesday arrested two local militants of Hizbul Mujahideen and recovered cache of arms and ammunition from their possession in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Acting on a credible input, the security forces arrested the duo at a check point at Panzgam in Awantipora area, a police spokesman said. "During checking, security forces recovered arms and ammunition from their possession which includes UBGL, grenades and live rounds and other incriminating material," he said. The arrested militants have been identified as Jan Mohammad Sheikh and Nasir-ul-Islam, both affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen, the spokesman said. A case has been registered under relevant sections of law.

J-K: 2 Hizbul terrorists held in Pulwama

Two terrorists of Hizbul Mujahideen were arrested by Jammu and Kashmir Police from Pulwama's Awantipora on Wednesday.The police have recovered arms and ammunition from the Hizbul men. Further investigation is underway.The arrest comes a day after two terrorists were killed while trying to infiltrate in the Keren sector of Kupwara district.On Sunday, a terrorist was gunned down by police in Handwara town in the Kupwara district. He was later identified as a member of terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).As of November 6, security forces have gunned down as many as 200 terrorists this year in the state, with 30 neutralised in October alone.

C'garh: 5 security personnel, 1 civilian injured in Bijapur IED blast

Five security personnel and one civilian were injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast here in Bijapur district on Wednesday.The incident took place at around 9:00 am in a truck carrying Border Security Forces (BSF) troops of 414 Adhoc Batallion in the Bijapur Ghatti.Out of the five security personnel injured, four of them belonged to BSF while one person was from District Reserve Guard (DRG).Elaborating upon the incident, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Naxal Operation) P Sundarraj said, "4 BSF jawans, one DRG and one civilian have been injured in IED blast in Bijapur Ghatti (7 kms from Bijapur). All injured have been admitted to a hospital in Bijapur."According to initial reports, all the injured are out of danger and would be airlifted to Raipur if required. No polling personnel was there during the incident.The exchange of fire is underway between security forces and Naxals. Four persons snatch SUV in Pathankot, security tightened

Four persons, travelling in a hired SUV from Jammu, snatched the vehicle from its driver at gunpoint near Madhopur area here, police said Wednesday. The incident took place Tuesday night when the driver stopped the car near Madhopur after one of the passengers complained of vomiting, they said. The suspects, who were speaking in Punjabi, had booked the car from the Jammu taxi stand, police said. They said the driver was identified as Raj Kumar, a resident of Jammu. Security has been tightened in and around Pathankot district following the incident and vehicles are being checked, police said, adding that efforts are underway to trace the car. Six injured in IED blast in C'garh

Five security personnel, including four BSF jawans, and a civilian were injured when Naxals blew up a truck with an IED in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Wednesday, a senior police official said. The incident took place around 9 am at Bijapur Ghati, located around 7 km from Bijapur town, Deputy Inspector General (anti-Naxal operations), Sundarraj P told PTI. "Four Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, belonging to 414th battalion, a District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawan, and a civilian, who was driving the vehicle, received injuries in the improvised explosive device (IED) blast," he said. Reinforcement was rushed to the spot and the injured persons were shifted to a local hospital, he said, adding that a search operation was underway in the region. Bijapur is located around 450 km from the state capital Raipur.

Desai demands lifting of liquor ban in Chandrapur district

A senior Shiv Sena minister demanded Tuesday thatthe liquor ban in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district should be lifted, arguing that it was leading to rise in sale of illegal liquor and related crimes. The state government has imposed prohibition in three districts: Wardha,Gadchiroli and Chandrapur. Sena leader and industries minister Subhash Desai pointed out that a police sub-inspector was mowed down by liquor mafia last week during a vehicle checking. Woman arrested in J&K for smuggling arms

The Jammu and Kashmir Police Tuesday arrested a woman for allegedly smuggling explosives and ammunition, a police officer said. The police had set up a mobile check post at Lawaypora on the outskirts of the city following inputs about militants trying to smuggle arms into the city, the officer said. Several hand grenades and a large number of live rounds were recovered from the woman's bag during the checking of the vehicle in which she was travelling. Police have not revealed the identity of the woman as she was being questioned.

Chemical weapons body faces 'difficult moment', new chief warns

The world's chemical arms watchdog is confronting a "difficult moment" after a series of recent attacks and a Russian spy scandal, the body's new chief said Tuesday. In an interview with AFP days before a key meeting of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, director-general Fernando Arias said attacks in Salisbury, Kuala Lumpur and Syria were "worrying". But Arias said the OPCW would look beyond "temporary" divisions among members because "this organisation is forever" when it came to the eradication of chemical arms. "We are going through a difficult moment," Arias said at his office in The Hague. "But what I can say is that the general feeling of the member states of this organisation is that the OPCW is more needed than ever." Two unidentified terrorists were killed Tuesday when the Army foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Keran sector. Govt extends ban on 8 insurgent groups of Manipur by 5 years

A ban on eight rebel groups in Manipur has been extended by the government for five more years for their continued involvement in unlawful and violent activities, the Home Ministry said Tuesday. The groups have openly declared their objectives of formation of an independent Manipur by secession from India, employing and engaging in armed means to achieve their goal besides attacking security forces, police and government employees, it said.
