Top leader of Bangladesh's banned militant outfit killed

Bangladesh police Tuesday killed chief of a homegrown banned militant outfit blamed for several deadly attacks on foreigners, bloggers, rights activists and 2016 Dhaka cafe siege that killed 20 people, including an Indian girl. Khorshed Alam alias Shamim, chief of Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), was killed in a gunfight in Bogra in the northern town of Shibganj, police said. Bogra Sadar circle's Additional Superintendent of Police Sanatan Chakraborty said they raided the Tantipukur area, following a tip-off that a group of militants had gathered there. Upon seeing the police, the militants opened fire, forcing the security personnel to fire back, triggering a gunfight, Chakraborty was quoted as saying by the Dhaka Tribune. Although the majority of the militants fled the scene, Khorshed's bullet-riddled body was found on the spot, the officer said. Shopian encounter: Slain terrorists affiliated to Hizb-ul Mujahideen

Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants killed in encounter in J-K

Two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants, including an Army deserter, were Tuesday killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Safanagri area of Zainapora of south Kashmir in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday after receiving credible inputs about the presence of militants in the area, a police spokesperson said. He said as the search operation was going on, the hiding militants fired on the search party of the forces. The spokesperson said the forces retaliated the fire, leading to an encounter in which two militants were killed. The slain ultras have been identified as Mohammad Idrees Sultan alias Chota Abrar, a resident of Safanagri Shopian and Amir Hussain Rather alias Abu Sobaan, a resident of Awneera Shopian. Nearly 80 children kidnapped from Cameroon school

Around 79 children from a boarding school in Cameroon's Northwest region were kidnapped by armed men on Monday.The men entered the Presbyterian Secondary School in Bamenda, overpowered the security guard and forced him to take them to the children, who were sleeping, Louis Marie Begne, spokesman for Cameroon's Northwest government, told CNN.The armed miscreants kidnapped the children and three others, including the principal of the boarding school.Following the abduction, an emergency meeting was held and the police and military forces are on a manhunt to find the children, Begne said. Maharashtra Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar Monday hit back at Union minister Maneka Gandhi, who had slammed him for hiring private marksmen Shafat Ali Khan and his son Asgar Ali for carrying out hunting operations in the state, including the latest killing of a tigress. Police, Army differ on Bomdila police station attack

A large number of Arunachal Scouts personnel vandalised Bomdila police station in West Kameng district, damaged five vehicles and snatched away arms and ammunition after two of its personnel were taken there in connection with an incident of alleged misbehaviour, police said Monday. A defence communique said the two personnel of the Second Arunachal Scouts were picked up by police when they had gone to attend Buddha Mahotsav in Bomdila and were severely beaten up in custody. Missing CRPF head constable traced to his home town

A Central Reserve Police Force head constable, on duty at the central prison here and missing since November three, has been traced to his home town in Thanjavur district, the police said Monday. The 46-year old Annadurai, working at CRPF Battalion camp at the prison for the last two years, had gone to take bath at 5 PM on November 3 after guard duty, they said. As he did not return, the camp office lodged a missing complaint with Race Course police the next day, police said. Investigation revealed that Annadurai apprehending that he may not be sanctioned leave, left for his native town of Orathanadu to celebrate Diwali, police sources said. UK opens up armed forces recruitment to Indians and nationals from the Commonwealth

The UK government on Monday announced a relaxation of recruitment criteria to allow Commonwealth nationals to apply for jobs in its armed forces to meet a shortage in its ranks, a move that could also benefit Indians. The decision announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) means that people from Commonwealth countries - including India, Australia, Kenya, Fiji and Sri Lanka - will be considered for roles, even if they have never lived in Britain. The Commonwealth is an association of 53 independent states that are mostly former territories of the British Empire. The MoD laid out the proposals in a written ministerial statement (WMS) before Parliament, which involves a waiver of the current requirement of a minimum of five-year residency in the UK for applying to join the country's Army, Navy or Air Force. This would open up the forces to recruits who have been based in countries like India, Australia, Canada and Kenya and meet the necessary recruitment criteria for the service and role

Curfew relaxed briefly in J&K's Kishtwar

Authorities on Monday relaxed for three hours the curfew imposed in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar township following the killing of a senior BJP leader and his brother by suspected militants on Thursday night. The local administration had given area-wise relaxation in the township for two hours on Saturday and four hours on Sunday. This is for the first time in the past five days that the curfew was relaxed for three hours on trial basis in the entire township, District Development Commissioner, Kishtwar, Angrez Singh Rana, told PTI.
