Naxal killed by security forces in Chhattisgarh

ANaxalwas today killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Narayanpur district, police said. The skirmish took place this morning in a forest near Kalepal village under Benoor police station area, district Superintendent of Police Jitendra Shukla told PTI. After receiving information about presence of rebels between Chinari and Kalepal villages, around 350 km from Raipur, a squad of the police's District Reserve Guard was sent to the spot, he said. The security forces came under fire from the Naxals near Kalepal, leading to a gun battle, Shukla said. After a brief exchange of fire, the rebels fled and the body of Soma Vadde, a member of Bayanar Local Organisation Squad of Maoists, was found subsequently, he said. Police also recovered a country-made gun, the SP said, adding that a search operation to nab other rebels was underway.

Afghan leader rejects resignation letters from spy chief, ministers

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani today rejected the resignations of the intelligence chief and the Interior and Defence ministers, as the government faces fierce criticism over an increasingly deadly insurgency. Ghani called on Defence minister Tariq Shah Bahrami, Interior minister Wais Ahmad Barmak and Intelligence chief Masoom Stanekzai to continue their duties, after rejecting their resignation letters submitted yesterday, and demanded they help bolster the country's defences. "President Ghani did not approve their resignations... and gave them the necessary instructions to improve the security situation," said a palace statement. On Friday Ghani's powerful national security adviser Mohammad Haneef Atmar had resigned, in a blow to the embattled unity government before parliamentary elections scheduled for October. J&K: Four terrorists arrested in Kalaroos near LoC

Four newly recruited terrorists, along with warlike stores, were arrested on Sunday from the upper reaches of Handwara's Kalaroos region, while they were attempting to exfiltrate across the Line of Control.The terrorists, who were recruited by Al Badr for a planned exfiltration, were trapped after the army and local police laid an ambush.Al Badr is an Islamic terrorist group operating in the Jammu Kashmir region.In a statement the Army said, "After a brief gunfight, extreme restraint was exercised and opportunity given to the terrorists to surrender. Afghan president declines resignation of top officials

Afghanistan's top security officials have tendered their resignation, but President Ashraf Ghani asked them to remain at their posts. The presidential palace said Sunday that Ghani declined the offers to resign submitted by Defense Minister Tareq Shah Bahrami, Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak and Masoum Stanekzai, Afghanistan's top intelligence official. Yesterday, Ghani accepted the resignation of Mohammed Haneef Atmar, his national security adviser, and replaced him with Hamdullah Mohib, who previously served as the ambassador to the United States. The security shake-up comes after weeks of unrelenting attacks by the Taliban, who have seized several districts across the country in recent years. The insurgent group has also boosted its diplomatic profile, sending official delegations to Indonesia and Uzbekistan, and accepting an invitation for talks in Moscow.

Four militants surrender before security forces in Kupwara

Four newly recruited militants surrendered before security forces today after the forces launched an operation to stop them fromexfiltrating across the Line of Control (LoC) inKupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. "On receipt of credible information about four newly recruited terrorists being guided by three terrorists of Al-Badr for a planned exfiltration, the Army in a joint operation with police, laid an ambush and trapped the terrorists in upper reaches ofKalaroosin Handwara," Srinagar-based defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said here. He said that after a brief gunfight, "extreme restraint was exercised and opportunity given to the terrorists to surrender". "While the four newly recruited terrorists surrendered. DR Congo rolls out prototype Ebola drugs as death toll rises to 67

An outbreak of Ebola in eastern DR Congo has killed 67 people this month, authorities said today, as they roll out a battery of new drugs to tackle the virus amid concerns it has spread to a rebel-encircled area. A total of 105 cases have been reported since the flare-up of Ebola began on August 1 in Mangina in North Kivu province, according to the country's health ministry, out of which 77 have been confirmed by laboratory tests. It said 11 people have recovered from the virus and 67 had died. Health minister Oly Ilunga Kalenga travelled to Mangina on Thursday and saw two patients being discharged after they were treated with a new prototype treatment called mAb114. "These two people are among the first 10 patients to have received the therapeutic molecule mAb114," the ministry said in a statement. Defence Ministry approves procurement worth Rs 46,000 cr

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Saturday approved procurement worth approximately Rs. 46,000 crore for the purchase of defence equipments and supplies, including 111 utility helicopters, 14 Vertically Launched Short Range Missile and 150 indigenously developed 155 mm Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems.In a meeting chaired by Defence Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, the DAC approved Rs. 21,000 crore out of the total procurement amount for purchasing 111 utility helicopters for the Navy. This is the first project under Ministry of Defence's notable Strategic Partnership (SP) Model which intends to provide a major boost to Centre's 'Make in India' program.This model envisages indigenous manufacturing of major defence platforms by an Indian Strategic Partner, who will collaborate with foreign Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), acquire niche technologies and set up production facilities in the country.The model aims at promoting India as a manufacturing hub for defence ...

Four injured in clashes in UP's Shamli district

Four people were seriously injured in a clash between two groups at Pirkheda village in Shamli district, police said today. They suffered bullet injuries and are being treated at a hospital. The incident took place last night in the Jhinjhana police station limits, Additional Superintendent of Police Shalok Kumar said. Security has been tightened in the village after incident. In another incident here, police have arrested eight people for allegedly attacking a family in Purbalyan village. Egypt officials say 4 police, 4 militants killed in Sinai

Egyptian security officials say four policemen and four militants have been killed during clashes in the restive northern Sinai Peninsula. The officials said that militants armed with explosives and RPGs attacked a checkpoint at the entrance to el-Arish city today. They said another 10 policemen were wounded. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media. Egypt's state-run MENA news agency quoted an unnamed official as saying that police thwarted the attack and confirmed the militants' death. It didn't report any casualties among the police. It also said other militants fled after the attack. HRW: At least 16 children among kidnapped by IS in Syria

At least 16 children are among nearly 30 civilians kidnapped by Islamic State militants in southern Syria a month ago and are being used as a "bargaining chip" in negotiations with the Syrian government and its ally Russia, Human Rights Watch said today. The rights watchdog said that the children are aged between seven and 15 years old. It called the kidnapping a "war crime," saying the 27 hostages held since July 25 should not be used for bargaining and called for their immediate release. The militants have beheaded a teenage hostage and a woman died in their custody. The reason for her death was not immediately clear. Witnesses told HRW two women managed to escape their abductors. Malpura clashes: 10 more people arrested, no relaxation in curfew

Ten more people were arrested today in connection with the clashes at Rajasthan's Malpura town in which 15 Kanwariyas were injured on Thursday, police said. So far, 28 people have been arrested and there has been no relaxation in the curfew, which was imposed yesterday following the clashes, they said. Clashes erupted after locals pelted stones at Kanwariyas in Malpura in Tonk district on Thursday injuring 15 of them. The situation remains tense but is under control, police said. Station House Officer (SHO), Malpura, Navnit Bihari Vyas said with 10 more arrests today, a total of 28 people have been arrested since the incident. There has been no relaxation in the curfew considering the law and order situation in the town. The situation is under control, he said. No fresh incidents of violence was reported since yesterday, the SHO said. The attack on Kanwariyas was followed by arson in which a vehicle was torched forcing the authorities to impose Section 144 of the CrPC.

One person killed, 10 injured during panchayat chief election

One person was killed and 10 others were injured when two groups clashed during the election of a village panchayat pradhan (chief) in West Bengal's North Dinajpur district today, police said.
