Legal framework for Maratha reservation needs to be strong: Mungantiwar

Amid the raging Maratha quota row, Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar today said the government does not want to 'fool' the community with a hurried decision which may end up in a long court battle. Speaking to reporters here, Mungantiwar said Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was making all efforts to give reservation to the community and emphasis was being laid on following of all due processes. The politically influential Maratha community, which constitutes around 30 per cent of the state's population, has been agitating for reservation in jobs and education sector. Mungantiwar said the legal framework for providing reservation has to be strong so that it cannot be challenged in court. "The government does not want to fool the community by giving them a few days of happiness with a hasty decision, which will then get entangled in legal battles," he said. He said the reservation protesters should realise that the government is sincerely working out a plan ...

5,600 gelatin sticks seized, six held in TN

Nearly 5,600 gelatin sticks and other explosive items allegedly meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka were seized today from the Serankottai coast near here, and six people were arrested in this connection, police said. Acting on a tip off, a police team reached the spot and seized the gelatin sticks, they said. All the six people, hailing from Ramanathapuram district, were taken to a police station. The seizure has raised fears that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam might be trying to revive its fight against the Sri Lankan government, otherwise there was no reason for such a large quantity of explosives to be smuggled to the island nation, intelligence officials said. The Sri Lankan government had in May 2009 declared an end to the 25-year civil war after the army took control of the entire island and killed the leader of the Tamil Tigers. On June 25, more than 50 boxes of abandoned ammunition, 41 light machine guns, 22 machine guns and five land mines were unearthed near the ...
