Miscreant beaten to death by villagers in Latehar district

One miscreant was beaten to death by villagers when he along with other accomplices was trying to collect levy in the name of an ultra organisation in Latehar district, police said today. The deceased identified as Ranjit Ram along with his accomplices had come to Bariatu village late last night to collect levy in the name of an ultra organisation "JJMP", police said. Armed with firearms they asked a villager Jitendra Singh to open door of his house. As soon as Jitendra opened the door be was attacked with lathis by the miscreants, police said adding that another villager Virendra Singh rushed to rescue Jitendra but he too was beaten up. Both Jitendra and Virendra received injuries in the incident and were rushed in a local hospital. A large number of villagers assembled on the spot on hearing the screams and gheraoed the miscreants, who wanted to flee. The villagers caught hold of two miscreants and started beating them. 90 killed, over 180 injured in twin election-related blasts in Pak

At least 90 people, including a top nationalist leader, were killed and more than 180 others injured today in a powerful suicide blast and a targeted attack on separate election rallies in Pakistan, the deadliest in a series of assaults on candidates ahead of the July 25 polls. Militants targeted a gathering of Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) leader Siraj Raisani in Mastung area in the troubled Balochistan province. Huge cache of arms hidden by GNLA seized in Meghalaya

A huge cache of arms and ammunition hidden by the outlawed GNLA and its dead 'commander-in-chief' Sohan D Shira was seized by the East Garo Hills police today. Today's seizure was made from the villages of Bawegre and Dorengkegre with leads provided by the locals and support provided by them, district superintendent of police Ringrang TG Momin said. The seized arms include 347 heavy machine gun bullets, two bodies of AK series rifles, 485 AK 47 bullets, four pistols, six pistol magazines, six shotgun cartridges, 52 pistol ends measuring 7.65 mm each, 57 numbers of 7.62 SLR bullets, 63 GNLA seals, nine remote IED circuits and 28 electronic detonators, 104 bullets of .303 rifle, 2659 bullets of 7.7 m.m. rifle, the police said. The district police had launched a search for hidden arms and ammunition of the outfit in different spots along Simsang river over the past few months, Momin said. Crude bombs found ahead of Jagannath Rath Yatra, two held

On the eve of the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra here, police today said it has found crude bombs during a search in Gomatipur, a communally-sensitive area of the city. The 141st Rath Yatra (the chariot procession of Lord Jagannath) will start from the Jagannath temple in Jamalpur area amid tight security tomorrow morning and those expected to attend the event include Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and many other leaders. Two persons including a bootlegger were detained following the recovery of explosives from the terrace of a house near Rajpur toll booth, inspector B V Zala of Gomatipur police station said. Four crude bombs, similar to firecrackers made using 'sutli' (strings), 12 pipe bombs and a bottle of kerosene were found during the search, the police said. Woman Naxal killed in encounter in Sukma, say police

A woman Naxal was killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district today, police said. The skirmish took place this evening in a forest near Somagudem village when a team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) of police was out for a combing operation, said Deputy Inspector General (anti-Naxal operations) Sundarraj P. When the police were cordoning off the area between Lingapalli and Pedagudem villages,they came under heavy firing near Somagudem, leading to an exchange of fire, he told PTI. The body of Hungi, a woman Naxal who was a member of Golapalli Local Organisation of rebels, was found at the spot later, the DIG said. Search operation is still underway, he said. On July 10, two Naxals were killed and a DRG jawan was injured in an encounter near Minpa in Sukma district.

Sri Lankan court orders release of 16 Indian fishermen

The Oorkavalthurai Court (Jaffna) in Sri Lanka has ordered the release of 16 Tamil Nadu fishermen, who were arrested recently for crossing the maritime boundary.Earlier, the 16 fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on July 5 and July 8 for illegally entering Sri Lanka and violating the territorial waters.Fishermen from both the countries are being apprehended on a regular basis for breaching each other's territorial waters or doing suspicious activities.

People should not pelt stones at army: DGP Vaid

The top cop of Jammu and Kashmir today appealed to people not to go near the encounter sites and pelt stones at security forces in order to avoid loss of lives as army is their own. "We are saddened if someone dies in this way. That is why we have been appealing that wherever there is an encounter, people should not go there to pelt stones on the army. This is our own army," Director General of Police S P Vaid told reporters. Vaid said he could feel the pain of the family that looses its child in such incidents. "The family that loses its child, we can feel their pain. How difficult it is! We again appeal to everyone that this should not happen and they should not come to the encounter sites and stone-pelting should not happen on army," he said. Vaid said police has discussed the issue of avoiding deaths during stone-pelting incidents with the army and CRPF officers. "We have spoken to officers of army and CRPF on how to avoid deaths in such incidents," he added.

Suspected militants open fire at Manipur village

Suspected militants opened fire at Gamnom village in Manipur's Tengnoupal district located close to the Indo-Myanmar border in the early hours today, but there was no report of any casualty, police said. Security forces rushed to the village but the militants fled before the arrival of the security forces, the police said. However, police recovered 42 empty cartridges, six empty cartridges of lethod shell and two missed lethod shells from the spot, a police officer said, adding that no one was injured in the firing. The reason for the firing or the involvement of the militant militant groups were not known, the officer said. Security forces are carrying out combing operations in the area, the police officer added.
