UN chief says Trump-Kim summit 'important milestone'

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today welcomed the summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as "an important milestone" toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Guterres urged all those concerned to "seize this momentous opportunity" and again offered UN help to achieve the goal of dismantling North Korea's nuclear weapons program. The summit held in Singapore was "an important milestone in the advancement of sustainable peace and the complete and verifiable denuclearization on the Korean peninsula," Guterres said in a statement. Trump and Kim signed a joint statement in which Pyongyang pledged to "work toward complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula" but the term "verifiable" did not appear in the text. Agreeing to verification would entail international inspections of North Korean military sites to certify that nuclear weapons and the means to produce them have been scrapped. Ahead of the summit, Guterres stressed that a

Congress concerned over rising terror attacks in Kashmir

Condemning the dual attacks that left two cops dead and over a dozen CRPF men injured, Jammu and Kashmir Congress today expressed concern over the unabated militant strikes despite the Centre's peace-initiative during Ramzan. In Pulwama, two policemen died in a gunfight with militants while a grenade attack in Anantnag left over a dozen CRPF men injured. "We condemn the terror attack today in which two cops were killed in this holy month of Ramzan," JKPCC Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Sharma said. "It shocked us that two grenade attacks on security forces have left dozens injured," he added. On May 16, the Union government directed security forces not to launch counter-terror operations during Ramzan but said they reserve the right to retaliate if attacked. The Congress said militants have no respect for any religion and were misusing the Central government's peace initiative to carry out their "nefarious" activities. "The militants have no respect for any religion and are trying to ...

Israel police evict wildcat settlers as deadline looms

Israeli police began evicting settlers from homes in a West Bank outpost today ahead of a court deadline to leave structures partially built on Palestinian land, an AFP correspondent reported. Young boys in tears were followed by a young woman holding a baby, as they were escorted out of their home in the Netiv Haavot neighbourhood of Elazar settlement, south of Jerusalem. They left without any resort to physical contact by the unarmed police. In February, Israel's Supreme Court gave the settlers until June 15 to vacate 15 homes found to have been built partly on private Palestinian land. An estimated 2,000 people, most of them young activists, had travelled to the outpost to support the settlers and protest against their eviction. Large Israeli flags were flying on some of the rooftops, as well as signs pledging to return to the site. After morning prayers, men sang and danced in a show of faith outside the homes to be razed. Police entered house after house, escorting residents and .

Taliban launch attacks as Afghan govt ceasefire starts

Taliban fighters killed a governor and took control of his district in northern Afghanistan as clashes broke out across the country, officials said today, accusing the militants of defying the start of a government ceasefire with them. There was intense fighting between Afghan security forces and Taliban gunmen in the northern provinces of Faryab and Sari Pul, with officials reporting an unspecified number of casualties on both sides. The governor of Kohistan district in Faryab was killed along with eight others in an ambush overnight, provincial governor spokesman Jawed Bidar told AFP, blaming the Taliban. He said the militants had seized control of the district. That was confirmed by provincial police chief Nabi Jan Mullah Khail. The Taliban claimed the Faryab attack as well as one in Sayad district of neighbouring Sari Pul where provincial governor spokesman Zabiullah Amani said fighting was still under way. "Last night large numbers of Taliban attacked several villages... the ...

Casualties as twin suicide attack hits eastern Libya

Two suicide bombers today hit forces loyal to Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar who is leading an offensive against jihadists in an eastern town, a spokesman for his forces said. The explosions were heard across Derna as the bombers hit the Chiha district in the south of the town, spokesman Khalifa al-Abidi said. Abidi did not give a toll for the attacks but said civilians were among the casualties as the roof of a family home collapsed. On Monday night, another suicide attack killed two fighters of Haftar's Libyan National Army and wounded three, the spokesman said. Over the past month, the self-styled LNA has been engaged in an offensive to take Derna, the only eastern town outside Haftar's control. Derna is held by a ragtag alliance of Islamist and jihadist militias, including groups close to Al-Qaeda, hostile to both Haftar and the Islamic State group. The coastal town is located more than 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) east of the capital Tripoli and around 300 kilometres east of ...

Terror, hooligan threats cast shadow over Russia's World Cup

Russia has deployed air defence systems and stringent fan background checks in a sweeping security operation to counter the twin threats of terror attacks and hooliganism at the World Cup. The country was already intensely policed when it was controversially awarded the right to host the event in 2010 but the clampdown that followed saw hardened hooligans seek cover and business barons wind down the operations of factories that process hazardous materials for fear they might be attacked. Fans travelling to Russia are required to register with the police on their arrival in one of the 12 host cities and even riverboat traffic is being curtailed to make it easier for the authorities to keep track of everything that moves. At least 30,000 security personnel will fan out across Moscow by the time the hosts kick off against Saudi Arabia at the Luzhniki Stadium on Thursday. Squadrons of fighter jets will be on standby near the capital and air defences will be on the alert for suspicious ...

Militants to blame if forces hit them harder after peace initiative ends: Omar Abdullah

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah today said militants "will only have themselves to blame" if security forces hit them harder than before after the Centre's peace initiative ends. On May 16, the Union government directed security forces not to launch counter-terror operations during Ramzan but said they reserve the right to retaliate if attacked. "With the militant organisations doing their best to make sure the ceasefire is a failure they will only have themselves to blame if the security forces come back at them even harder when the ceasefire ends," Abdullah tweeted. He was reacting to the two militant attacks in south Kashmir's Anantnag and Pulwama districts in which two policemen were killed and six other security personnel were injured. Abdullah said those who killed the policemen in Pulwama "deserve nothing but eternal flames of hell". "And that too on the night of Shab-e-Qadr. The killers of these police personnel deserve nothing but the eternal flames of ..

Yemen president in rare visit to estranged UAE ally

Yemen's president is to hold talks in Abu Dhabi today as he attempts to repair relations with the United Arab Emirates, which has increasingly sidelined him in its three-year military intervention. President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi is making the rare visit on the advice of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, where he lives in exile, Yemen's government-run Saba news agency reported. Saudi Arabia and the UAE sent troops to Yemen in 2015 with the stated goal of restoring Hadi to power after he fled the country as Huthi Shiite rebels overran most of the country. But Hadi's close relations with the Muslim Brotherood-dominated Islah party have infuriated Abu Dhabi, which has swung its support behind secessionists who want to restore the pre-1990 independence of south Yemen. With UAE backing, in January the secessionists overran the main southern city of Aden where Hadi's government has its headquarters. UAE forces and their allies have also occupied several ...
