Three Palestinians have died from their wounds days after being shot by Israeli troops during protests in the Gaza Strip, the territory's health ministry said today. An attack on an Orthodox church today in the mainly Muslim southern Russian republic of Chechnya killed two policemen and a civilian and left four rebels dead, officials said. "According to early information, two policemen in charge of security at the church ... and a civilian were killed," the officials said. They added that "four rebels have been eliminated" while two other policemen were hurt. They also indicated a knife and a gun were found on the attackers behind the assault targeting the Archangel Michael church in central Grozny, and said police had prevented "more serious consequences and a larger number of victims." Thousands of soldiers with war fighting equipment of South Western Command's Chetak corps are engaged in intensive training in Mahajan field firing ranges of Rajasthan under exercise 'Gandiv Vijay'. The exercise, which began two months ago, will conclude on May 23, a senior official said. "The Chetak Corps of the Command are currently carrying out an exercise in the Mahajan field firing ranges close to Suratgarh to validate their operational plans for last two months," defence spokesperson Lt Col Manish Ojha said. The exercise involves multi-mode mobilisation from dispersed locations to the time and place of decision in a terrain orchestrated on the lines of operational responsibility of the formation. "The participating formations will carry out synergistic employment of long-range vectors along with the infantry and mechanised forces and the air arm to achieve a decisive victory," he said.
Two groups of Nigerians got into a fight and indulged in stone pelting in south Delhi's Neb Sarai, the police said today. Two men were detained last night in connection with the incident, but after no formal complaint was received from either sides, they were let off, they said. It was found that they were fighting over one group using foul language for the other. Later, they started throwing stones at each other, the police said. After police were informed last night, they rushed to the spot and pacified the situation. Policemen were deployed in the area to ensure that the situation does not get out of hand. Police today recovered the body of a woman in the early hours today from her apartment at Kaikhali area in northern parts of the city. A senior police officer said, the blood soaked body of 30-year old Shampa Das, bearing multiple injury marks, was found in the morning after breaking open the locked apartment by cops. They were alerted by neighbours. She worked as a civic volunteer of West Bengal police. Her husband was found in injured condition and has been admitted to a local hospital. He was not in a position to speak, the officer said adding he too had been working as a civic volunteer with Bidhannagar police commissionerate. Investigators were probing multiple angles including loot in the murder, the officer said. The job of a civic volunteer is to assist the police in manning traffic and other routine work.
Chechnya's leader says four gunmen who attacked a Russian Orthodox church in the mostly Muslim province have been killed by security forces and one policeman has died. Ramzan Kadyrov says the gunmen attempted to take people hostages inside the Archangel Michael Church on Saturday. He says in remarks carried by Russian news agencies that he personally oversaw a special operation in which the assailants were killed. A 40-year old police constable allegedly committed suicide while on duty in Datia district today. Constable Kishan Singh shot himself with his service rifle around 12.30 pm, said Superintendent of Police Mayank Awasthi. Singh was on security duty at the office of the Special Armed Force when he allegedly shot himself. He died on the spot, the SP said, adding that further probe was on.
Security forces recovered a huge cache of explosive materials following a gun-fight with the Naxals in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, police said today.
