Security forces today launched a search operation in forest area of Tral in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir following a brief exchange of firing with militants. A brief exchange of firing took place between security forces and militants in Tral forests this morning, a police official said. He said the security forces launched a search operation as the ultras fled in thick vegetation of the forest. Further details of the operation are awaited, the official said.

Indonesian authorities said today they shot and killed four men who staged an attack on a police headquarters that left one officer dead and several wounded. The group slammed a minivan into a gate at the station in Riau on Sumatra island and then attacked officers with samurai swords, according to the country's national police. UN extends African peace mission in Somalia

A UN-backed peacekeeping mission in Somalia, which faces attacks by an Al-Qaeda affiliate, received unanimous Security Council backing today until July 31. The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), with about 21,600 troops, operates with the approval of the UN and relies on international funding. Taliban launch large-scale assault on western Afghan city

'Recruiter' of terror suspect detained in UAE: Police

Farooq Devadiwala, allegedly the recruiter of a terror suspect arrested in Mumbai last week, has been detained by the law enforcement agencies in the United Arab Emirates, a senior police official said here today. Faizal Hassan Mirza, a distant relative of Devadiwala, was arrested on May 11 for allegedly plotting attacks in Mumbai, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. The action against Devadiwala followed Mirza's arrest, the official said. When asked if Devadiwala would be deported to India, the official said it was a "distinct possibility". Maoist-hit Bastar to get air connectivity from June 15

The Bastar district of Chhattisgarh, battling Maoist insurgency for long, will be on the aviation map of the country from June 15 when Air Odisha begins services from Visakhapatnam to district headquarters of Jagdalpur and Raipur.
