Gazans bury their dead after bloodiest day in years

Gazans buried their dead today with calls for "revenge" a day after a major demonstration led to clashes that saw Israeli forces kill 16 Palestinians in the bloodiest day since a 2014 war. But while anger seethed over yesterday's events, only several hundred protesters had returned to tents erected at different sites near the Gaza Strip's border with Israel by mid-afternoon to resume demonstrations planned to last six weeks in the blockaded enclave. Thousands attended funerals for 14 of those killed -- two were buried yesterday -- with mourners holding Palestinian flags and some chanting "revenge" and firing into the air. The armed wing of Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs the Gaza Strip, said that five of those killed were members who were participating "in popular events side-by-side with their people." "Where are you, Arabs? Where are you, Muslims?" mourners chanted at one funeral, calling on the Arab and Muslim world to intervene. A general strike was also being held in both .

Israel says it will expand response if Gaza clashes go on

Israel will target "terror organizations" in Gaza if violence along the territory's border with Israel drags on, the chief military spokesman warned today, a day after thousands of Palestinians staged protests near the border fence. The mass marches were led by Gaza's ruling Hamas group and touted as the launch of a six-week-long protest campaign. Palestinian health officials said 15 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire and more than 750 hit by live rounds, making it the bloodiest day in Gaza since the 2014 cross-border war between Israel and Hamas. In yesterday's confrontations, large crowds gathered near the border fence, with smaller groups of protesters rushing forward, throwing stones and burning tires. Israeli troops responded with live fire and rubber-coated steel pellets, while drones dropped tear gas from above. The army released video showing soldiers with rifles perched on high earthen embankments overlooking the scene. Brig Gen Ronen Manelis, the chief army spokesman, .

UK mulls Russian request for access to Yulia Skripal

Britain said today it was considering Moscow's request for consular access to Yulia Skripal, the daughter of a former Russian spy targeted in a nerve agent attack. Sergei Skripal and his daughter have been in hospital since March 4 after being poisoned in an attack in Britain that London and its major Western allies blame on Russia. The first use of chemical weapons in Europe since World War II has chilled Moscow's relations with the West. The Foreign Office said that in reaching its decision, it would take into account whether Yulia Skripal wanted Russian officials to pay her a visit in hospital. Yulia Skripal came out of critical care on Thursday. The 33-year-old was "improving rapidly and is no longer in a critical condition", said Salisbury District Hospital.
