Clashes, 15 dead as thousands of Gazans march near Israel border

Clashes erupted as tens of thousands of Gazans marched near the Israeli border in a major protest today, leaving 15 Palestinians dead and hundreds more wounded in the conflict's worst single day of violence since the 2014 Gaza war. Late in the day, Israel's military targeted three Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip with tank fire and an air strike after what it said was an attempted shooting attack against soldiers along the border that caused no injuries. Protesters, including women and children, had earlier gathered at multiple sites throughout the blockaded territory, which is flanked by Israel along its eastern and northern borders. Smaller numbers approached within a few hundred metres of the heavily fortified border fence, with Israeli troops using tear gas and live fire to force them back. Israeli security forces also used a drone to fire tear gas toward those along the border, in one of the first uses of the device, a police spokesman said. The health ministry in Gaza said 15 ...

Up to govt to withdraw my security cover: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

Moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today said it was up to the government to withdraw his security cover as he had never asked for it. "I reiterate that government is free to withdraw the police personnel as and when it wants as I have never asked for it," the Mirwaiz said addressing Friday congregation at the Jamia Masjid here. Apparently referring to Centre's written response to a question in Parliament, Mirwaiz said the issue of police cover provided to him is being raked up and "exploited" by the government. "Drums are being beaten about the expenditure incurred on the cover. What is obvious is the pettiness of such people that they can play politics even on such an issue," he said. The Mirwaiz said after the killing of his father, Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq by militants in 1990, police personnel were stationed at his house at Nigeen when he returned from Mirwaiz Manzil Rajouri Kadal where his family were staying for two months. "When we inquired (about the ...

Syria bomb kills 2 coalition troops from US and UK

A roadside bomb in northern Syria killed two coalition personnel, an American and a Briton, and wounded five others in a rare attack since the US-led coalition sent troops into the war-torn country, the US and British militaries and a US defense official said today. The military did not say where the attack took place or give the nationalities of the other casualties but it came hours after a local Syrian official said that a roadside bomb exploded in the tense, mixed Arab-Kurdish town of Manbij that is not far from the border with Turkey. Manbij is under threat of a Turkish military operation. Ankara says Syrian Kurdish militiamen it views as "terrorists" and an extension of Kurdish insurgents inside Turkey are in control of the town. The US military statement said the attack happened last night and that the wounded were being evacuated for further medical treatment. The statement said details were being withheld pending further investigation. A Department of Defense official in ...

BSF says it didn't allow 'even single infiltration' along IB

The BSF today said it has not allowed "even a single infiltration" along the international border with Pakistan, saying the area reported to have seen a recent case of infiltration was manned by the Army personnel. Four terrorists were on March 28 killed in a day-long encounter with security forces in the Sunderbani area of Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district. The fidayeen, or suicide attackers, had infiltrated into the Indian territory from across the Line of Control (LoC) about four-five days before the encounter, prompting security forces to launch a search operation in the area. "The (border) area on north of Chenab river is under the command of Army. The area on south of Chenab river is under operational command of the BSF. I cannot comment on the area, which is on the north of Chenab river. You can talk to army for that," Director General of Border Security Force K K Sharma told reporters here. "We have not allowed even a single infiltration along IB", DG BSF said.

Israeli drone drops tear gas on Gaza protesters

Israeli border police dropped tear gas from a drone onto Palestinian protesters in Gaza today, a police spokesman told AFP, acknowledging operational deployment of new technology. An AFP correspondent saw a drone release around 10 gas canisters as protesters on the border with Israel cursed the small craft. A number of people were injured by the containers, which fell from a height of between 10 and 20 metres, the correspondent said. Use of unmanned aerial vehicles to launch gas is a recent innovation, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. "It was used a few weeks ago around the Gaza Strip area and it is also being used today, in order to prevent protesters getting to the Gaza crossing or Gaza border," he said. "It's a mini-drone which has the capability of flying over certain zones and certain areas and then letting go of tear gas in areas that we want to prevent protesters from reaching." Video of the tactic in use was shown in a report earlier this month by the Lebanese ...

Mahmoud Rahmi, 33, became the seventh person killed when he was shot near the frontier in one of the bloodiest days of Israeli-Palestinian clashes in years, according to the ministry. "Some unknown gunmen killed six people -- four men and two women -- at a mining site in Bakin-Kogi on Thursday," state police spokesman Mukhtar Aliyu told AFP. He said a female miner was also injured in the incident. "Military and police personnel have launched a manhunt for the attackers and we will not rest untill they are apprehended," he said. "We cannot say at this stage who was responsible for the attack, only investigation will determine who was behind it," he said. Aliyu declined to say if the attack was linked to the herder-farmer conflict, insisting it was "premature" to speak on the identity of the attackers. Bakin-Kogi is situated in the Jema'a district in the southern part of Kaduna state, a hotbed of ethnic and religious tensions. The area has witnessed frequent clashes between ...
