Violence breaks out in Bhaderwah after one person killed in firing

Curfew was Thursday imposed in Jammu and Kashmir's Bhaderwah Valley following violent protests triggered by the killing of a person in a firing incident, police said. While officials were trying to ascertain the reason behind the firing incident, relatives of the deceased Nayeem alleged he was a victim of cow vigilantism, police said. However, the other side involved in the incident said they opened fire after they found the two men roaming under suspicious circumstances on Wednesday night, police said. Soon after the incident, family of the deceased attacked the Bhaderwah police station, damaged five vehicles and set afire a three wheeler, they said. Police used batons and teargas to quell the mob. "One person with the name of Nayeem was coming from Chatergala side. 3 ULFA(I) cadres surrender in Assam: Police

Three cadres of an outlawed outfit have surrendered before the police in Tinsukia district of Assam, a senior police officer said. One of them was allegedly involved in the killing of Bhaskar Kalita, the officer-in-charge of Bordumsa Police Station, Director General of Police Dr Kuladhar Saikia told reporters here on Wednesday. Based on inputs about the ULFA-I men crossing the India-Myanmar border to carry out specific activities in upper Assam, a joint counter-insurgency operation was launched by a team of Assam Police, the Indian Army and the CRPF at Tarani Reserve Forest on Tuesday. "The security forces persuaded the cadres to give up arms and the ULFA(I) personnel surrendered with a huge cache of arms and ammunition," a police officer said. The weapons and the ammunition which the cadres surrendered include AK-81, AK-56 and HK-33 rifles along with nine magazines, two hand grenades and 425 bullets. Youth injured in protests against child's rape died

A youth, who had sustained grievous injuries in clashes during protests at Pattan against the rape of a three-year-old girl, died at SKIMS hospital here, officials said Thursday. Arshad Dar succumbed to injuries at the hospital late Wednesday night, the officials said. Over 45 security personnel, including an officer, and seven civilians were injured in the clashes during protests at Pattan on Srinagar-Baramulla highway on Monday, a police official had said. Youths had pelted stones at security forces at several locations in Baramulla district in north Kashmir, he said. Kashmir witnessed violent protests against the rape of a minor girl allegedly by her 20-year-old neighbour last week. The accused has been arrested and a special investigating team formed for expeditious probe of the case.

Two terrorists killed in encounter in J-K's Pulwama

Two terrorists and a soldier were killed Thursday in an encounter in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, army said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Deliporavillage of Pulwama following information about presence of terrorists there, a police official said. He said the hiding ultras opened firing on the search party, who retaliated, triggering off a gun battle. An army official said two terrorists were killed in the gun battle while one jawan also lost his life in the operation, which was going on till last reports came in. The identity and group affiliation of the slain terrorists was being ascertained. According to intelligence inputs,a top self styled commander of Hizbul Mujahideen was believed to be among those trapped in the security forces' cordon.

Special peace court orders release of former Colombian guerrilla

A special peace court in Colombia ordered on Wednesday the "immediate release" of a former left-wing guerrilla leader wanted by the United States for drug trafficking. Jesus Santrich, a blind former leader of the FARC rebels, was arrested in April 2018, suspected of participating in the trafficking of 10 tons of cocaine to the United States. However, the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) ordered him released to comply with the "non-extradition guarantee" that formed part of the historic 2016 peace accord that brought an end to FARC's 50-year insurrection, converting the former rebels into a political party. Colombia's Attorney General Nestor Humberto Martinez responded to the order by resigning. The JEP is the special court tasked with judging crimes committed during Colombia's half century of armed conflict. India joins global initiative to combat extremism online

India joined France, New Zealand, Canada and several other countries on Wednesday in launching a major initiative in Paris to combat terrorism and extremism online and secure the internet. The initiative -- 'Christchurch call to action' -- was named after the New Zealand city where 51 people were killed in an attack on mosques, officials said. "A free, open and secure internet is a powerful tool by which to promote connectivity, enhance social inclusiveness and foster economic growth," the declaration on Christchurch call to action said. Maharashtra: IPS officer Deven Bharati to head ATS

Maharashtra state government on Wednesday appointed senior IPS officer Deven Bharti as chief of the state's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).Bharati, a 1994-batch Indian Police Service officer, was promoted to Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) from Mumbai Police's Joint Commissioner Police.In April 2015, Bharti became the city's joint commissioner of police (law and order)and was the longest serving officer on the post.Bharti had investigated several high-profile cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and journalist J Dey's killing.He is also credited for breaking the backbone of terror outfit Indian Mujahideen in the state.

Wife of Sri Lanka church bomber delivers their first baby post-Easter attacks

The wife of a Sri Lankan suicide bomber, who blew himself up at the St Anthony's Church, delivered their first baby two weeks after the deadly Easter Sunday attacks that killed more than 250 people including the attackers, the Colombo magistrate's court has been told. Alawddin Ahmed Muath, the 22-year-old law graduate, was one of the nine suicide bombers who carried out a series of coordinated attacks on three churches and three luxury hotels on the Easter Sunday. During a court hearing on Tuesday, Muath's 59-year-old father Ahmed Lebbe Alawddin informed Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne that the bomber was the fourth of his five children.
