Israeli security agency Shin Bet on Sunday said it thwarted a plot by Palestinian militants to carry out a bombing attack against Israel's Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
Two policemen were killed and six others were injured in a fierce gun-battle with Naxals after the rebels ambushed a police team in a dense forest in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Sukma district today, a top official said. The skirmish started around 11 am near a rivulet in the forest between Elarmadgu and Bhejji under Bhejji police station limits, when a joint team of security forces was out on an "area domination operation", Deputy Inspector General of Police (south Bastar range) Sundarraj P told PTI. "Assistant constables Madkam Handa and Mukesh Kadthi, belonging to DRG (District Reserve Guard of police), were killed and six other jawans suffered injuries in the encounter," he said. Of the injured, four are DRG personnel and other two belong to the Special Task Force (STF) of the state police. Five women were shot dead in an apparent radical Islamist attack on an Orthodox church in the North Caucasus region of Dagestan today, officials and local media said. According to local press reports an unidentified gunman fired at worshippers at an Orthodox church in the town of Kizlyar in the mainly Muslim region. "An unknown man opened fire with a hunting rifle in Kizlyar, fatally wounding four women," the regional internal affairs ministry said in a statement. A fifth woman died of her injuries in hospital, health ministry spokeswoman Zalina Mourtazalieva told TASS news agency. Two Russian police officers were injured in the attack. The attacker was "eliminated" by police fire, the regional internal affairs ministry added. Six members of a family, including four women, were today booked by the Thane police for preventing a police team from arresting a person wanted in a case of cheating. Police said that an offence had been registered by NM Joshi Marg police in Mumbai against some people for cheating a woman in a bank. CCTV footage showed that an accused, Javed Sakar, was hiding in Ambivli in Kalyan, police said, following which a police team from Mumbai moved to nab him. Officials said that six members of a family prevented the police for entering the house long enough to allow Sakar to esacpe. An official said that a search was on for Sakar.
Five men were found dead in an irrigation tank in neighbouring Kadapa district today, police said. The bodies in a decomposed state were found floating in the tank at Vontimitta village, about 120 km from here, indicating they might have died at least a couple days ago, police said. Police, on being alerted by the locals, retrieved the bodies this evening and were carrying out a search of the tank. The bodies were yet to be identified and police in neighbouring states of Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka had been alerted, they said. Police said they were also probing the angle whether the men were part of red sanders smuggling gang.
Over 2,000 fishermen from Tamil Nadu, who had put out to sea in 490 mechanised boats, were chased away by the Sri Lankan Navy when they were allegedly fishing near Katchatheevu islet, a fishermen association leader claimed. The Lankan navy personnel, who came in 10 boats, also warned the fishermen not to poach fish near Katchatheevu and snapped the nets and fishing equipment of nearly 200 boats, Tamil Nadu Mechanised Boats Fishermen Association president P Sesuraja claimed here today. The fishermen, who ventured to the sea last night after a four-day strike, had to return empty-handed, he added. The fishermen also appealed to the government to take steps to prevent frequent attacks on them. On February 13, nearly 2,000 Tamil Nadu fishermen were allegedly chased away by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel and warned against venturing near Katchatheevu islet.
Two Indian nationals were today arrested in Nepal for smuggling arms into the country, police said. Prasad Kushwaha, 27 and Ajay Prasad Kushwaha, 21, were arrested from a hotel room during a raid by a special police team in Gaur Municipality in southern Nepal. Acting on a tip off, the police team raided the hotel and confiscated two pistols and three round of bullets from the Indian nationals, Nepal police said. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Ajit Prasad Kushwaha, a Nepali national from Birgunj Municipality in southern Nepal was arrested, police said. They said a pistol was confiscated from him. The 28-year-old Kushwaha was arrested during a security check by the police, police said, adding that further investigation into the matter was going on.

Israel arrested six Palestinians suspected of planning attacks targeting Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman and other Israelis in the occupied West Bank, security agency Shin Bet said today. Shin Bet said the six were affiliated with the Islamic Jihad militant group and were active in the Bethlehem area where they sought to carry out shootings against Israeli civilians and security forces. In addition, some of the group had been planning to target Lieberman's vehicle when he travelled to his home in a West Bank settlement. According to a Shin Bet statement, the suspects had been "trying to obtain explosives to make a bomb, and even reached out to terror elements in (Gaza) for funding." Three JMB militants were today arrested with bomb-making material in Bangladesh's Rajshahi city, according to a media report. The elite Rapid Action Battalion conducted a raid at Shahebjan Alis home in Tanores Bilsahar village based on a tip, bdnews24 reported. The detainees have been identified as Shahebjan Ali, 35, Abul Kalam Azad, 28, and Jahangir Alam, 28. RAB-5 Commander Lt Col Mohammad Mahbubul Alam said that they seized 500 gram of gunpowder, seven extremist propaganda leaflets and bomb-making material from their possession. The home was searched, the three were detained and the bomb-making materials were seized, Alam said. RAB officials say the three are part of banned Islamic terror outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh.

Prime Minister of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir Raja Farooq Haider has instructed authorities to give state funerals to those killed due to alleged firing by Indian troops across the Line of Control. Haider yesterday accused the Indian Army of targeting civilians, including women and children, The Express Tribune reported. "All deputy commissioners have been instructed to ensure the best treatment of the injured as well as funerals of martyrs with state honour," he said, alleging that Indian troops recently targeted a school van killing its driver.
