Pak backed militants to continue attacks in India: US Intel chief

Pakistan-supported terrorist groups would continue to carry out attacks inside India, America's intelligence chief has warned, amid a spike in terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats' remarks came days after a group of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists struck the Sunjuwan Military Camp in Jammu on Saturday, killing seven people including six soldiers. On February 12, a gunfight broke out between security forces and militants, who took shelter in a building in Karan Nagar area of Srinagar after their attempt to strike a CRPF camp was foiled. Pakistan, in fact, will continue to threaten US interests by deploying new nuclear weapons capabilities, maintaining its ties to militants, restricting counter- terrorism cooperation, and drawing closer to China, Coats said in his testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Kuwait to give USD 2 billion in loans, investments for Iraq

Kuwait's ruling emir said today that his oil-rich nation will give USD 1 billion in loans and USD 1 billion in direct investments to help rebuild Iraq, a stunning donation as only a generation ago Saddam Hussein invaded the small, oil-rich nation. Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah's offer shows the deep interest his nation has in making sure Iraq becomes a peaceful, stable country after the war against the Islamic State group and the chaos that followed the 2003 US-led invasion of Baghdad. Iraq also still owes Kuwait reparations from its 1990 invasion. "This large assembly of international communities that are here today is reflective of the large loss that Iraq withstood in facing terrorism," Sheikh Sabah said at a donor's summit at Kuwait City's Bayan Palace. "Iraq cannot commence the mission of rebuilding itself without support, which is why we are all here today from all around the world, to stand by Iraq's side," he added. Kuwait's pledge was followed by the promise of a 400 million

Venezuela and Libya lose UN vote for 3rd time in 3 years

Venezuela and Libya have been suspended from voting in the UN General Assembly for the third time in three years because of millions of dollars in unpaid dues to the world body. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres informed the General Assembly in late January that 14 countries including Venezuela and Libya were in arrears, and Assembly spokesman Brenden Varma confirmed today that Venezuela has lost its vote in the 193-member global organisation as a result. Libya did as well. According to a letter from Guterres to the Assembly president, Venezuela must pay a minimum of USD 25,200,296 to restore its voting rights and Libya must pay at least USD 6,594,842. Venezuela is mired in an economic and political crisis and Libya has two rival governments, each backed by an array of militias.

Rohingya issue may escalate terrorists' recruitment: US

The Rohingya issue in Myanmar and Bangladesh may expand opportunities for recruitment of terrorists, America's intelligence chief warned today. Some 700,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar's western state of Rakhine and taken refuge in Bangladesh after the country's military launched a brutal crackdown in August last year after attacks. The turmoil resulting from more than 600,000 Rohingyas fleeing Burma (Myanmar) to Bangladesh increases regional tension and may expand opportunities for terrorists' recruitment in South and Southeast Asia, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said in his testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Further operations by Burmese security forces against Rohingya insurgents or sustained violence by ethnic Rakhine militias probably would make it difficult to repatriate Burmese from Bangladesh, Coats said during the hearing on 'Worldwide Threat Assessment' of the US intelligence community. Coats said democracy and human rights in .
