A Palestinian was killed during clashes with Israeli forces in the north of the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry announced. Israeli forces entered the Palestinian city of Jenin yesterday, eyewitnesses said, with violent clashes breaking out in which Israeli police said there were a "number of injuries". The health ministry named the dead man as Ahmed Jarrar, 22. At least two Palestinians were arrested, with clashes ongoing today, Palestinian eyewitnesses said. Videos posted online by Palestinians showed multiple Israeli armoured vehicles entering the city. Israeli media suggested the raid might have been linked to the killing of a rabbi in the West Bank a week earlier. Ten people were killed and dozens injured today in a double suicide-bomb attack in the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri, a civilian militia leader and a resident said. Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat today warned that a large scale infiltration bid from across the Line of Control could be made in the next few months. Security agencies today conducted a mock drill at a Delhi Metro station in the national capital region as part of counter-terror preparations in view of the forthcoming Republic Day celebrations on January 26. The drill was organised by the CISF, which is tasked with the security of the Delhi Metro, at Vaishali station in Ghaziabad near here. A terrorist attack-like situation was simulated at the station and multiple agencies such as the CISF, the National Security Guard, Delhi Metro, the National Disaster Response Force, civil defence, Uttar Pradesh Polices' anti-terror squad and fire department participated, a senior security official said. Bomb disposal teams, dog squads, traffic police and medical reinforcements were part of the drill, he said. A total of 167 personnel were involved in the mock drill conducted to check the preparedness of the security agencies, who protect vital public spaces, in the run up to the Republic Day celebrations, he said.

A group of prisoners today attacked jail staff and set fire to some furniture inside the prison premises in West Bengal's Hooghly district, police said. Some prisoners led by Nepu Giri first started abusing the prison staff of Hooghly jail and then attacked them in which one jail staff was injured, they said. They prisoners also set fire to furniture in the Hooghly jail, the police said. A police team led by Commissioner of Chandennagarore Police Commissionerate, Ajay Kumar rushed to the Hooghly jail and brought the situation under control, the sources added.
A case was registered against a private news channel for airing photographs of innocent youths of Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district, and calling them militants, police said today. "In reference to 'V6' news channel telecast, two innocent youth namely Farhan Shafi, a Class XII student, and Farhat Rashid, a diploma holder, have been shown by the instant news channel as militants in place of the killed militant Farhan Wai of Wanigund," a police spokesman said. An encounter took place between security forces and militants at Larnoo village of Kokernag in Anantnag district on January 9 in which one militant, Farhan Wai of Hizbul Mujahideen, a resident of Wanigund, was killed, he said. Two Naxals were arrested after an exchange of fire between security forces and Maoist rebels in Chhattisgarhs insurgency-hit Bijapur district, police said today. Police said that the two Naxals, identified as Madvi Baman (30) and Harish Podiam (23), were rounded up yesterday from the forests near Bhusapur village under Usoor police station limits, about 450 kilometres from here, following an exchange of fire. The encounter took place during an anti-Maoist operation launched at Galgam, Bhusapur and Tekmela villages of Usoor by a joint team of the Special Task Force (STF), Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) and district police. Expressing concern over the open sale of army apparel and gear, the Delhi High Court today pulled up the Centre for not taking the issue seriously and asked the Delhi government to take steps to curb the sale and manufacture of such items. The bench said the Centre does not seem to be interested in doing anything despite seriousness of the issue which has its implications on "state security and public safety".
