SSB arrests Nepali man with charas worth Rs 2 cr in Bihar

The SSB has arrested a Nepal national on charges of smuggling drugs and seized 10 kg of charas from him in Bihar's West Champaran district, an official said today. A Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) team on patrol duty stopped him from entering the country in an area under the Bhangaha police station late last night, SSB 44th Battalion, Commandant, Rajesh Kumar Tikkoo said. They found that he was carrying charas worth Rs 2 crore in a bag and apprehended him, he said, adding that he was trying to smuggle the contraband on a motorcycle. The man has been handed over to the police, the official said.

Islamic State group offshoot claims 2017 Niger attack on US

An Islamic State group Sahara offshoot is claiming it carried out the October attack in Niger that killed four US soldiers and four Nigerien troops. The Mauritanian Nouakchott News Agency reported yesterday that the self-professed IS affiliate Abu al-Walid al-Sahrawi claimed responsibility for the October 4 attack about 200 kilometres north of Niger's capital, Niamey. The news agency has carried messages from the affiliate before, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist websites. The news agency says the extremists also claimed responsibility for an attack Thursday on a French military convoy, and for a series of attacks in Niger and border areas with Mali and Burkina Faso.

Delhi: CRPF jawan saves woman from drowning in canal

An 18-year-old woman was today saved from drowning in the Munak canal here by an alert CRPF jawan, who was on sentry duty at the force's camp in the Bawana area, a senior official said. Constable Pramod Kumar Chauhan was on sentry duty and around 11 am, he saw someone drowning in the canal, which flows right behind the 55th Battalion camp, he said. It is believed that the woman fell into the canal accidentally, the official said. The jawan alerted his colleagues and jumped into the water, rescuing Lakshmi P, he said, adding that she was given first aid at the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp. The woman, a resident of Narela, was admitted to a local hospital later, the official said.

JKNPP attacks BJP over PDP MLA's comment on Kashmiri militants

Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) today took strong exception to a PDP MLA's "Kashmiri militants are martyrs" remarks, and said the state's security was under threat due to glorification of separatists. Earlier this week, PDP legislator Aijaz Ahmed Mir stoked a controversy when he described Kashmiri militants shot dead in encounters with security forces as "martyrs" and "brothers" and also cautioned against glorifying their killings. "There was a near unanimity among different political parties regarding the imminent threat to the security of the state due to the glorification of subversives and separatists by the PDP-BJP alliance," JKNPP chairman Harsh Dev Singh said in a statement here. Case against lyricist Vairamuthu over remarks on Hindu goddess

A case was today registered against popular Tamil film lyricist Vairamuthu for his alleged remarks against a Hindu goddess at a function here recently. A case was registered against Vairamuthu based on a complaint from a Hindu Munnani functionary, police said adding investigation is on. A row had erupted after the national award-winning lyricist had reportedly made the comments against Andal, a hindu goddess, at a function here recently. The complainant Suri stated that devotees of Sri Andal were hurt by the poet's remarks, police said.

Security forces defuse IED in J-K

The security forces on Saturday defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted near HMT Road in Srinagar of Jammu and Kashmir.A joint team of civil police, second Rashtriya Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force(CRPF) carried out a recce of the area, on receiving information about the explosive, during the wee hours of Saturday.The explosive was discovered adjacent to a road divider by the forces with the help of a dog squad."We received an information about the IED at 3 am. With the help of our dog squad, the explosive, which was placed adjacent to the road divider, was found. The engineering squad of the army then defused the bomb," Rajesh Kumar, Commanding Officer told ANI.Last week, four policemen were killed in an IED blast in Sopore.Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Jammu and Kashmir, Munir Khan had said that they will look into the matter and chalk out a new strategy to deal with such a situation.

Eight arrested in ATM looting case

Eight persons, allegedly involved in breaking three ATMs and looting Rs 30 lakh last month here, were arrested and detained under Goondas Act today, police said. They were arrested in nearby Salem with the money looted from ATMs here on December nine and 10. While three of them hailed from Rajasthan, three others were from Haryana and one each from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Security forces defuse 5-kg IED on Srinagar-Baramulla highway

Security forces today defused an improvised explosive device (IED), weighing approximately five kilogrammes, on Srinagar-Baramulla highway, a police official said. The IED was found in HMT area of Srinagar this morning, the official said. The official said the area was cordoned off and traffic was diverted. A bomb disposal squad was rushed to the spot, which defused the explosive device, the official said. Militants often trigger IED blasts to target security forces in the region. On January 6, four policemen were killed in an IED blast in Sopore township of north Kashmir.

Myanmar army's admission of killings a 'positive step': Suu

Protests against Honduran leader's re-election turn violent

Protests against the re-election of Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez have turned violent with security forces firing tear gas and some marchers breaking windows and setting fires. Video from yesterday's protests showed former President Manuel Zelaya being shoved by military police. Zelaya and defeated presidential candidate Salvador Nasralla also suffered the effects of tear gas. Hernandez was awarded the electoral win weeks after the November vote and a disputed vote tally. 16 suspects arrested in Balochistan raids
