The Russian army today said it had "eliminated" the militants behind a mortar attack on a base in Syria on New Year's Eve that killed two Russian soldiers. "The command of our troops in Syria carried out a special operation to find and eliminate the group of militants that carried out the mortar attack on the Hmeimim base (Western Syria)," the Russian defence ministry said in a statement. Special forces tracked the fighters to their base camp near the border of Idlib province, the statement said. When the fighters, whose affiliation was not announced, were preparing to leave the base they were "destroyed by a Krasnopol guided missile," according to the ministry. "A drone assembly and storage area was also discovered" the announcement said. To check the operational preparedness of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other agencies on scenario of Terrorist Attack, a mock exercise was conducted on Friday in the national capital.During the exercise, teams of CISF, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), International Baccalaureate (IB) and Haryana Police participated in the mock exercise.Many terrorist organisations are currently adapting to different modus operandi/methods to fulfill their nefarious goals so this exercise was conducted to combat them all.During the exercise, CISF as a first responder followed the standard drill and countered the terrorists.Within time frame other teams of various stakeholders like Quick Reaction Team (QRT), Dog Squad, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams of Haryana Police also reached the spot and actively participated in the exercise.A total 154 personnel from different agencies participated. Army Chief Gen. Bipin Rawat today said the force was ready to call Pakistan's "nuclear bluff" and cross the border to carry out any operation if asked by the government. "We will call the (nuclear) bluff of Pakistan. If we will have to really confront the Pakistanis, and a task is given to us, we are not going to say we cannot cross the border because they have nuclear weapons. We will have to call their nuclear bluff," Gen. Rawat said. He was responding to a question during a press conference on possibility of Pakistan using its nuclear weapons in case the situation along the border deteriorates. In reply to another question, he said India and the US were deliberating on a proposal to appoint military liaison officers at each other's combatant commands. "We are examining various dimensions of the proposal," he said.
The city police today arrested three BJP leaders of Cuttack for their alleged involvement in pelting stones at the police during the partys agitation in front of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) here yesterday. The police arrested city BJP president Laxmidhar Pradhan, youth leader Debashis Ghosh and Jyoti Ranjan Palei. They were booked under various sections of IPC. During the BJP gherao of the CMC, the protesters entered into a clash with the police when the latter stopped them from marching towards the CMC office. During the clash, a senior police officer was injured when a stone hit his forehead. The three BJP leaders were produced before a court which remanded them to 15-days judicial custody.
Security forces destroyed illegal poppy plantation in the catchment areas of the Lava river in Manipur's Churachandpur district today, police said. Boko Haram fighters have killed at least 20 loggers, militia members and residents said today, in the latest attack against civilians in northeast Nigeria. The attack happened on Monday when gunmen on motorbikes opened fire on a group of loggers collecting firewood at Kaje village, near the Borno state capital, Maiduguri. "They (Boko Haram) killed 20 people in the attack. Fifteen others are missing and presumed kidnapped by the attackers," civilian militia leader Ibrahim Liman told AFP. Details of the attack have been slow to emerge due to limited communications infrastructure after years of fighting in the remote region. Kaje resident Shuaibu Sidi corroborated Liman's account and said his brother was among the dead. Nigeria's government and military maintain that the Islamist militants, who have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, are on the verge of defeat. Militants tonight opened fire on a police post in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, an official said. The incident took place in the Keegam area. Police personnel responded to the firing. There was no loss of life reported in the incident, he said. He said the area was cordoned off and security forces were carrying out searches to track down the militants.

US Forces carried out an airstrike on an Afghan government militia after an apparent insider attack in eastern Afghanistan, Afghan sources have said, killing as many as 13 fighters. The incident occurred yesterday as US soldiers were patrolling in the Islamic State-stronghold of Achin in Nangarhar province, according to Hakim Khan, a commander of the government militia involved in the incident. He said there had been a "shooting incident" after which US forces conducted an airstrike targeting the militia. Khan said at least 13 fighters were killed in the airstrike, though other sources gave conflicting figures. An AFP reporter saw at least eight militia fighters buried on Friday morning. Suspected militants hurled hand grenades at an Assam Rifles post in Manipur's Kangpokpi district but there was no report of any casualty, police said today. The suspected militants hurled two hand grenades at Assam Rifles post yesterday night at around 8.50 pm. The AR personnel fired at the militants, who fled away, the police said. A police team lead by Superintendent of Police, Kangpokpi rushed to the spot and conducted a combing operation in search of the militants who hurled the grenades, they said.

An Afghan official says a Taliban attack has killed three policemen in western Farah province. Mohammad Naser Mehri, spokesman for the provincial governor, says the attack took place early this morning, targeting a highway security outpost in the province's Bala Buluk district. Mehri says more than 80 Taliban fighters took part in the attack. Police called in reinforcements, which repulsed the attackers. There was no immediate Taliban comment or claim of responsibility from the insurgent group. Miscreants today looted Rs 2 lakh from the possession of an employee of SBI's 'Grahak Sewa Kendra' in East Champaran district and roughed him up before fleeing the spot.
