President Xi Jinping has ordered the armed police force to uphold the "absolute leadership" of the ruling Communist Party of China as the force has been brought under the CPC's command for the first time. Xi, who is also general secretary of the CPC and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) - the overall high command of the 2.3 million-strong military, made the remarks at a ceremony by the CMC to confer a flag on the armed police force. Recently the armed police was ordered to function under the CMC which in turn functions under the CPC. Since 1982 the armed police force which focussed on law and order functioned under central cabinet known as state council. Previously disgraced top officials like Zhou Yongkong, who headed the internal security under former president Hu Jintao, were rumoured to have made use of it to attempt a coup against the central leadership. The Delhi Police in a joint operation with its Kerala counterparts has arrested three men here in connection with two dacoities in Kochi last year, a top official said today. The dacoities took place on December 15 and 16 last year in separate houses in Kochi. In both cases, eight-nine men broke into the houses and looted jewellery, cash, mobile phones and laptops, after attacking the occupants, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Alok Kumar said. Some of the looted gold jewellery was recovered from the accused, he added. Pakistan today claimed that India was "distracting" it from counter-terrorism efforts as it briefed foreign diplomats on the country's credentials amid criticism by the US for providing safe havens to militants. Ambassadors and Heads of Mission of resident Missions in Islamabad were briefed by the Foreign Minister, Foreign Secretary, Chief of General Staff (CGS), Director General Military Operations (DGMO) and Director General Military Intelligence (DGMI) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Myanmar security forces took part in a massacre of 10 Rohingya in September, the army chief's office said today, as it admitted for the first time abuses during a crackdown that sparked a mass exodus of the Muslim minority. The massacre took place on September 2 in the village of Inn Din in Rakhine state, the Facebook posting said, as tensions escalated pitting Rohingya against security forces and ethnic Rakhine locals following the killing of a Rakhine man. "Some villagers from Inn Din village and security members confessed they killed 10 Bengali terrorists," the office said in its post, using a pejorative term for Rohingya and blaming militants for causing the unrest in the village. The post also gave the first confirmation of a mass Rohingya grave inside Rakhine state following an army crackdown on militants from the minority group. Naxalism shall be eradicated from Jharkhand by the end of this year, said state Director General of Police D K Pandey. A woman naxal was today gunned down in an encounter with security forces in the forest of insurgency-hit Sukma district in Chhattisgarh, police said. The skirmish occurred in Kedwal-Tumalpad forests which fall in south Sukma when joint teams of troopers were conducting an anti-Maoist operation, Sukma Superintendent of Police Abhishek Meena told PTI. The Union Home Ministry has sanctioned Rs 226 crore to the paramilitary forces for procurement of telecommunication equipment and some other gadgets, an official said. The sanctioned amount of Rs 226 crore is being given to the CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP and SSB and the forces will utilise the fund as per their operational requirements, the official said. Militants belonging to the so-called Islamic State (IS) destroyed at least 116 villages in Iraq's Kirkuk province in the last three years.Kirkuk's governor Rakan Saed told Anadolu news agency that the terror group destroyed the villages surrounding Kirkuk between 2014 and 2017. More than 200 people were arrested and dozens hurt during clashes in several parts of Tunisia, the interior ministry said today, after a second night of unrest driven by anger over austerity measures. Ministry spokesman Khalifa Chibani told local radio that 49 police officers were wounded during clashes across the country and that 206 "troublemakers" were arrested.
