Two policemen including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shyampur police station were injured when a mob attacked them in Howrah district, police said today. The OC of Shyampur police station Suman Das with a police team had gone to Bargarchomukh village yesterday night after hearing reports of the clash between two groups over property dispute, they said. When the police were trying to disperse the two groups, the OC and another policeman were attacked by a mob, police said. The injured OC has been admitted to hospital, and his condition is stated to be critical, they said, adding, a large police contingent later went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Seven persons, arrested in connection with the attack on the OC, were today produced in a local court which remanded them to five days police custody.
At least 20 militants affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) have been killed in an airstrike in Afghanistan's eastern Laghman province.Two key IS leaders, identified as Mawlavi Turab and Musa Khan, were also among those killed in the airstrike which was carried out in the vicinity of Alingar district, reported Khaama Press, citing the Afghan Army, as saying in the statement.The statement further stated that the local residents and other people did not suffer any casualties during the airstrikes.No comments have been received from the anti-government armed militant groups, including the IS militants, by far.Laghman, which is, relatively among Afghan's calm provinces has lately witnessed the attempts of the anti-government armed militants to expand their insurgency activities, the report said.

The Tamil Nadu government would take up with the Centre grievances of the fishermen including frequent arrests of fisherfolk by Sri Lankan Navy and release of their seized boats, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam today said. "The government will take up with the Centre the issues faced by the state's fishermen including arrests by Sri Lankan Navy and seizure of their boats," he told reporters after meeting a team of fishermen here. Naxals set ablaze as many as six vehicles at a bauxite mine in Chhattisgarh's Balrampur district, near Jharkhand-Chhattisgarh border, the police said."North Sarguja of Chhattisgarh has already suffered because of the Naxals, but Naxalism had ended in the Balrampur district, as far as the last few years are concerned. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a top-level police conference on January 7-8 at the Border Security Force (BSF) Academy at Tekanpur in Gwalior. An official release said that the "Annual Conference of Director General of Police (DGPs) and Inspector General of Police (IGPs) of states" is an event where top police officers share and discuss security related issues. The PM has earlier addressed the conference in Guwahati in 2014, in Dhordo in Gujarat's Rann of Kutch in 2015 and at the National Police Academy in Hyderabad in 2016. "During the last meeting, issues such as cross-border terrorism and radicalization were discussed in detail. Clashes erupted between Egyptian protesters and policemen today outside a Cairo police station over the death of a young man in custody, security sources said. The protesters torched 10 cars including three police vehicles, they said. Nine people were injured and 40 people arrested in the overnight clashes in Cairo's Moqattam district which saw some protesters throw petrol bombs as police responded with tear gas and birdshot, they said. The security sources said a young man nicknamed Afroto, who was arrested on Friday for alleged drug trafficking, died after a violent brawl with other detainees. Security forces in Arunachal Pradesh have destroyed a temporary hideout of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) in Changlang district. Based on specific intelligence inputs, the Jairampur Battalion of the Assam Rifles, under the aegis of DAO Division, conducted an operation near Namdapha reserve forest yesterday and busted the hideout, Defence spokesman Col Chiranjit Konwer said. The action is part of the security forces' ongoing crackdown on insurgent activities in the run up to Republic Day. There was information about the presence of cadres of the outfit trying to terrorise people through extortion bids at Miao town, the spokesman said. Two Myanmar security officers and a driver were wounded by Rohingya rebels who ambushed their vehicle in northern Rakhine state, the army said today, the first apparent insurgent attack to hit the violence-scarred region in weeks. The sarpanch of a village in Chhattisgarhs Bastar district was killed by Naxals at his home, police said today. The sarpanch of Chhindgur village, identified as Pandru (45), was killed after a group of armed rebels stormed his house and slit his throat last night, Deputy Inspector-General of Police (south Bastar range) P Sundararaj told PTI. The village where the incident happened is located inside dense forests about 25 kilometres away from Darbha which itself is about 350 kms away from Raipur, Sundararaj added.
