Violence mars Bhima Koregaon battle anniversary event

The event to mark the 200th anniversary of the Bhima Koregaon battle in Pune district, in which the British Army comprising dalits had defeated upper-caste Peshwas, was marred by incidents of stone pelting and vandalism today. The incident occurred in Bhima Koregaon in afternoon when people were heading towards a war memorial in the village, police said. The violence erupted after a group and some members of the crowd on its way to visit the memorial had an argument over some issue. "Stone pelting started after the argument. During the violence, vehicles and a house in the vicinity was damaged," a police officer deployed for bandobast at Bhima Koregaon said without elaborating. He said the police blocked the vehicular traffic on Pune-Ahmbednagar highway for sometime following the incident. The traffic was finally resumed in evening. Slain militant warns of terror attacks in J&K

A video of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant Fardeen Ahmad Khanday, killed in yesterday's terror attack on a CRPF camp in Pulwama, has surfaced in which he has claimed the outfit will carry out more such attacks. Sitting amidst weapons and explosives, Khanday is seen making the threat. Khanday is believed to have joined militant ranks few months ago and it came to light when his family lodged a missing report with local police in September this year.

GoI to link all posts along Sino-India border by roads:Rajnath

The Centre has undertaken a special project to connect all the border posts along the Sino-India frontier with roads, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said today as he reviewed the operational preparedness of a forward ITBP unit here. Singh ringed in the new year with the troops of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at this border post located at a height of 11,614 feet in Uttarakhand, where the mercury dropped to minus 20 degrees Celsius today. This was the first time a home minister or a senior Union minister paid a visit to this border post. The home minister also instructed the ITBP personnel, in the presence of the force's Director General (DG), R K Pachnanda, to find out ways to rotate the troops at such high-altitude posts in less than three months' time. Currently, the troops are rotated every three months. This would enhance the operational efficiency of the personnel and also reduce the instances of mountain-related sickness among them, he said. Pulwama encounter: CRPF says search operation underway

In the wake of Pulwama encounter in Jammu and Kashmir, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Monday said the search operation is still underway in the area to be doubly sure before calling it off."The search operation is still going on. We want to be doubly sure before we call off the operation," CRPF Special DG (Jammu and Kashmir zone) SN Srivastava said during a media briefing."Two of the militants, killed yesterday, are from this region. Lt Gen Anbu visits north Kashmir, reviews security situation

Northern Army Commander Lt General D Anbu today visited forces' units in north Kashmir to review the prevailing security situation. "The army commander visited several units in north Kashmir and reviewed the situation there," an Army official said. He said Lt Gen Anbu was briefed about the winter preparedness and measures taken to meet the challenges posed by weather. "The Army Commander interacted with the troops on ground and conveyed his greetings for the New Year 2018 and complimented them for their determination and alertness in counter-terrorist and Line of Control operations in 2017," the official said. Criminal who escaped from police custody arrested

A notorious criminal, who had escaped from Etah police custody six months ago, was arrested here, a police officer said today. Sonu alias Sobran, carrying a reward of Rs 15,000 on his head, was arrested last night after a brief shoot-out with police, the officer said. Several cases of loot and robbery were registered against Sonu at various police stations, he said. Meanwhile, Sector-58 police arrested four suspected criminals yesterday and seized two country-made pistols, two motorcycles and several smartphones from their possession. They were identified as Mukeem, Nafees, Asraf and Pramod, the police said.

HP: Rs 20 lakh ex-gratia for family of jawan killed in Pulwama

The Himachal Pradesh government today gave an ex-gratia relief of Rs 20 lakh to the family of Inspector Kuldeep Roy of the 185 Battalion of the CRPF, who was killed in a suicide attack by militants in Pulwama district of south Kashmir yesterday. Roy hailed from Tikkar Khatriyan village of Hamirpur district. Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur have expressed grief over the death of Roy and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family and prayed for peace to the departed soul. Thakur said the brave soldiers of the state lead from the front to safeguard the country. The supreme sacrifice by the martyrs would always be remembered by the country, he said. Three militants in the early hours yesterday stormed a CRPF camp in the Lethpora area of Pulwama and killed five personnel while injuring three others. In response, all three militants were gunned down by the security forces. Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility for the attack.

CRPF camp attack: counter op ends, 3rd militant's body

The counter-operation launched by security forces against the militants who attacked a CRPF camp in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir ended today following the recovery of the body of another militant, the police said. Finally, the operation has concluded with the recovery of the body of the third terrorist, Director General of Police S P Vaid said. The bodies of two terrorists had been recovered yesterday. In a pre-dawn strike, five CRPF men were killed while three others injured when heavily armed terrorists stormed the camp of the paramilitary force at Lethpora in Pulwama district yesterday. The attack was claimed by Pakistan-based Jaish-e- Mohammed. The two ultras whose bodies were recovered yesterday were Manzoor Ahmad Baba from Drubgam (Pulwama) and Fardeen Ahmad Khanday from Nazeempora (Tral). Khanday was the son a serving policeman. The identity of the third militant was yet to be ascertained.

8 people including 3 security personnel injured in 2 blasts in

Eight people, including three security personnel, were today injured in two successive blasts in the restive Balochistan province, according to a media report. Two people were injured in the first blast when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in an under construction building at a busy marketplace in Mall Road in Chaman, a city near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, the Express Tribune reported. The second explosion took place shortly after at a police checkpost in the same area, when security personnel and onlookers had gathered at the site of first blast. Six people, including three security personnel, were injured in the blast, the report said. Up to 5,247 Muslims have been killed in the Boko Haram violence in seven local government areas of Adamawa town in northern Nigeria between 2013 and 2017.According to local media reports, the data was revealed by the Adamawa State chapter of Muslim Council. Turkey detains 25 IS suspects

About 25 people, including 15 foreign nationals, have been arrested in Turkish cities of Ankara and Istanbul for their suspected links with the Islamic State (IS) group.As per a report from Anadolu, the Turkish police and anti-terrorist police teams raided four addresses in Istanbul's three districts simultaneously on Sunday after they received a tip from a local intelligence agency about the presence of suspects linked to top IS leaders in Syria and Iraq.In a similar operation in the Turkish capital Ankara, the police raided two hideout places and detained five persons, all of them being foreigners. Suspected Boko Haram militants kill 2 in Cameroon

At least two people were killed and 30 more were injured in an attack by suspected Boko Haram militants on Sunday in northern Cameroon.According to Xinhua, three suspected members of the terrorist group were disguised as suicide bombers.
