Delhi govt to set up control room to monitor waterlogging after rains

The Delhi government will set up a 24-hour control room to monitor the waterlogging situation in the national capital, Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced on Friday after the city was lashed by heavy rains, the highest in a single day of June in 88 years. Bharadwaj and his ministerial colleagues Atishi, Gopal Rai and Imran Hussain held an emergency meeting in the afternoon to take stock of the situation after a downpour in the early morning left Delhi waterlogged and brought traffic to a standstill in many areas. A portion of the roof of the Delhi airport's Terminal-1 collapsed due to the rain, leaving one person dead and six injured. "Delhi recorded 228 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours which was the highest since 1936. It led to waterlogging," Atishi told a press conference. Monsoon has finally arrived in Delhi after severe heat spell, says IMD

The monsoon has finally arrived in Delhi after a long and severe heat spell in the city, the IMD announced on Friday. In an official statement, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into the entire Delhi region. "The Northern Limit of Monsoon passes through 26 N/65 E, Jaisalmer, Churu, Bhiwani, Delhi, Aligarh, Kanpur, Ghazipur, Gonda, Kheri, Moradabad, Dehradun, Una, Pathankot, Jammu, 33 N/74 E," it added. In the early hours of Friday, the monsoon's first rainfall lashed several parts of the national capital, causing waterlogging and traffic jams in many areas. The Safdarjung weather station recorded 153.7 mm of rainfall, which began around 3 am. Last year, Delhi had welcomed the monsoon on June 26. In 2022, it arrived on June 30 and in 2021, on July 13. In 2020, the monsoon reached Delhi on June 25, according to the data.

Gurugram waterlogged after heavy rains; residents face traffic woes

Heavy rains in Gurugram early Friday morning led to severe inundation, particularly in residential areas, and traffic jams across the city. Significant waterlogging was reported in Dwarka Expressway, Sector 9, Sector 21, Sector 23, Greenwood City, Ardee City, Palam Vihar, Bhim Nagar, and MG Road, making it difficult for residents to step out of their homes. The Delhi-Gurugram Expressway was also affected after rains lashed the city on Thursday night and Friday morning. According to the rainfall data till 7.30 am on Friday, Sohna received 82 mm of rainfall, followed by 55 mm at Wazirabad, 30 mm at Gurugram, while Pataudi received the lowest rainfall at 3 mm. Local residents highlighted the crisis on social media. Heavy rain leaves Delhi waterlogged, traffic comes to a standstill

As heavy rain lashed Delhi early Friday, waterlogging in many areas of the city led to a flood-like situation causing heavy traffic jams on the roads. The Delhi Traffic Police issued alerts to notify the affected carriageways, advising commuters to plan their journey accordingly. Visuals coming from various parts of the city show several areas inundated with water, leading to long traffic jams which affected commuters, especially, office-goers. At the New Delhi Railway Station, commuters had to walk through knee-deep water, carrying children to navigate the flooded roads. Water also filled metro stations in some areas, adding to the discomfort of the people. Red alert as Southwest monsoon causes landslides, waterlogging in Kerala

With Southwest monsoon intensifying in Kerala two days after its onset, heavy downpours lashed several parts of the state, especially in south and central districts triggering landslides, uprooting trees and waterlogging. Continuous rains for hours caused widespread destruction in the high-range areas of Kottayam and Idukki districts, while intense rains caused severe waterlogging and traffic snarls in the low-lying areas of Thrissur district. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) updated its weather warning, placing the central district of Thrissur and northern districts of Malappuram and Kozhikode under red alert on Saturday. NDMC to set up control rooms to check waterlogging during monsoon: Official

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will set up six control rooms to check waterlogging during the monsoon season this time, officials said on Thursday. NDMC member Kuljeet Singh Chahal reviewed the measures for the monsoon during the day and said the de-silting work of existing drainage systems in the NDMC area will be completed by June 30. The control rooms will be set up at the Sangli Mess, Khan Market, Netaji Nagar, Malcha Marg, Mandir Marg and Hanuman Road drainage service centres, and will be equipped with portable pumps with generator set, trucks, tools with facilitation of duty officers and manpower, he said. Last year, 300 complaints were received in the control room in connection with waterlogging. The NDMC has identified five vulnerable points of water stagnation -- Africa Avenue, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Panchkuian Road, Purana Quila Road and Lodhi Estate, Chahal said. Woman dead, 400 rescued as heavy rains flood several parts of Nagpur

Heavy rains over a span of few hours flooded many parts of Nagpur city, following which more than 400 people, including 70 students from a school for the speech and hearing-impaired, were rescued, said Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavi on Saturday. Delhi authorities brace up for flood, waterlogging ahead of G20 Summit

A contingency plan has been put in place to deal with waterlogging at the G20 venue and other strategic locations to fend off against rain during the two-day event in the city next month, officials said on Thursday. The plan involves having a battery of tractor-mounted heavy duty 50 horsepower pumps deployed to clear the excess water, mechanical road sweeping (MRS) vehicles, also mounted with heavy water jetting machines to clear mud and silt off road sides, and a 'super sucker' to clear clogged drains and sewer lines, they said. The machines will be deployed round-the-clock in two shifts of 12 hours each and will be monitored by a sanitary inspector, a helper, and a probationer IAS and DANICS officer. At least 16 dead in rain-related incidents in Telangana, says official

At least 16 people lost their lives in various rain-related incidents due to the downpour that lashed Telangana during the past week, officials said. Relief work gained momentum on Saturday as rainfall came to a halt in many parts of the state.
