Rains bring down mercury in Himachal Pradesh

The mercury stayed marginally below normal in Himachal Pradesh as scattered rains lashed several parts of the state. The day temperatures dropped marginally and Una on Shiwalik foothills was hottest in the region with a high of 35.6 degrees Celsius while Sundernagar recorded a maximum temperature of 32.1 degrees Celsius, followed by 30.6 degrees Celsius in Dharamshala and Bhuntar, 29.2 degrees Celsius in Nahan, 27.0 degrees Celsius in Solan, 20.0 degrees Celsius in Kalpa and 15.1 degrees Celsius in Keylong and 23.6 degrees Celsius in Shimla. Keylong and Kalpa in tribal Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur districts recorded a low of 2.0 degrees Celsius, followed by 6.0 degrees Celsius in Kalpa, 11.4 degrees Celsius in Bhuntar, 11.8 degrees Celsius in Shimla, 13.5 degrees Celsius in Solan, 14.8 degrees Celsius in Sundernagar, 15 degrees Celsius in Nahan and Palampur, 16.6 degrees Celsius in Dharamshala and 19.0 degrees Celsius in Una. Frequent western disturbances behind thunderstorms in north India: Experts

Something is unusual about the summer this year, weather experts say. The month of May, which is not yet over, has so far witnessed three western disturbances, leading to furious thunderstorms and dust storms across swathes of northern India in which more than 150 people have died. Thunderstorms, dust storms, rainfall during summers have been a normal phenomenon in northern India. "But not of this severity. The frequency of western disturbance is unusually high," said Mahesh Pahlawat, vice-president (Meteorology and Climate Change) at Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency. Mritunjay Mohapatra, additional director general of India Meteorological Department, said May alone has witnessed three western disturbances until now while April saw one. Rain, hailstorm lash Odisha, flights diverted

Rain accompanied by gusty winds and hailstrom today lashed parts of Odisha including the state capital Bhubaneswar. While Chandbali in Bhadrak district recorded 58.8 mm rainfall, Paradip in the coast received 27.2 mm rainfall. Heavy downpour has also been reported from Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Balasore, Puri, Baripada, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Sundergarh, Hirakud, Daringbadi and Dhenkanal, IMD sources said. Rainfall, along with lightning in several districts, brought much-needed respite from the scorching heat. Trees and electricity poles were uprooted at several places, while farmers alleged crop loss due to the rain. Unofficial reports from Kendrapara, Subarnapur and Bargarh districts claimed three persons died from the rains. "We cannot confirm the deaths. Heatwave conditions prevail in Rajasthan

Heatwave conditions prevailed in most parts of Rajasthan with Churu recording a maximum temperature of 43.7 degrees Celsius, a MeT department official said today. Churu was followed by 43.6 degrees Celsius in Jaisalmer, 43.5 degrees Celsius in Barmer, 43.2 degrees Celsius in Bikaner, 43 degrees Celsius in Kota, 42.2 degrees Celsius in Jodhpur, 42 degrees Celsius in Ajmer, 41.4 degrees Celsius in Jaipur, 40.3 degrees Celsius in Sriganganagar, 39.5 degrees Celsius in Pilani and 37.5 degrees Celsius in Dabok. The minimum temperatures at most places were recorded between 24 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius. The MeT department has warned of dust storm/thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds at isolated places in the state. It has predicted thunderstorm accompanied with light rains at isolated places in the state in the next 24 hours.

Depression over Arabian Sea, heavy rain likely in TN, Kerala

A depression over southern Arabian Sea is likely to intensify into a low pressure and bring heavy rainfall at isolated places in Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu during the next two days, the meteorological department said today. Fishermen in the region have been advised not to venture into the sea during the next 24-48 hours, Regional Meteorological Centre director S Balachandran told reporters. Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been receiving a decent amount of rainfall for the past a few days, he said. In Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram city and Thrithala village in Palakkad district recorded 10 cm and 7 cm of rainfall respectively in the past 24 hours ending at 8.30 am today. Palani in Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu received 4 cm of rainfall. Thunderstorms, lightning wreak havoc in 4 states, kill 41

Dust storms and thunderstorms wreaked havoc on Sunday in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and the national capital, killing at least 41 people and leaving behind a trail of destruction. Uttar Pradesh bore the brunt of a thunderstorm and hail that left at least 18 people dead, while 12 people including four children were killed in West Bengal, nine in Andhra Pradesh, and two in Delhi, officials said. 2 dead as squall, dust storm lash Delhi; rail, air, metro operations hit

A squall and dust storm with a wind speed of up to 109 kmph battered Delhi and neighbouring areas today, killing two persons and injuring 18 others, and throwing flight, rail and metro operations out of gear. The sky turned dark grey around 4:30 pm. Gusty winds and rain lashed the national capital, causing the temperature to drop more than 15 notches to 25.2 degrees Celsius from the day's maximum of 40.6 degrees Celsius. The much-needed reprieve came after a sweltering day, with humidity during the morning hours recorded at 60 per cent, a MeT official said. The officials said two squalls whipped through the national capital. One clocking 109 kmph hit the Safdarjung area at 4:44 pm and continued till 4:46 pm. A sudden dust storm and rain hit several parts of Punjab and Haryana, including Faridabad and Gurgaon, this evening, pushing temperatures down by a few notches. After hot weather conditions prevailed through the day, the dust storm brought relief to residents in several cities, including Chandigarh, Sonipat, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Karnal, Ambala, Panchkula, Jhajjar, Gurgaon and Faridabad. A squall and sudden dust storm with a wind speed of up to 109 kmph accompanied by light rain hit Delhi this evening after a scorching day, a Met department official said. The sky turned cloudy around 4:30pm and gusty winds swept the national capital. The sudden change of weather in Delhi forced airport authorities to divert at least 10 domestic flights, an official said.
