Foggy morning in Delhi, min temp settles at 8.2 deg C

People in the national capital today witnessed dense fog in the morning with the minimum temperature settling at 8.2 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature was recorded at 20.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal, while relative humidity oscillated between 100 and 51 per cent. The weatherman has predicted shallow to moderate fog tomorrow morning with the skies expected to remain clear through the day. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 18 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius respectively. Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 18.8 degrees Celsius and seven degrees Celsius respectively.

Cold wave continues in Kashmir, fog engulfs places in North

Intense cold wave continued in Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh today while the minimum temperatures dipped in parts of Punjab and Haryana with fog engulfing several areas in northern India. Though the mercury in Kashmir remained several degrees below the freezing point, the Meteorological (MeT) department has forecast the dry spell in the region to end in the next couple of days. Srinagar -- the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir -- recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius while the mercury at the ski-resort of Gulmarg settled at minus 8.3 degrees Celsius. Kargil continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 15 degrees Celsius. Leh recorded minus 11.8 degrees Celsius. Piercing cold conditions persist in most parts of Himachal

Residents of the hills and valleys of Himachal saw no relief from the biting cold as minimum temperatures hovered around the freezing point and remained below 4.0 degrees Celsius, one to four degrees below normal. Water pipes froze and burst at many places in the mid and higher hills, while thick fog engulfed the lower hills reducing visibility and hampering vehicular traffic. The high altitude tribal areas reeled under biting cold wave conditions with the mercury staying between minus 14 and minus 21 degrees Celsius, while Keylong recorded a low of minus 8.0 degrees Celsius, followed by Kalpa at minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, Manali at minus 2.4 degrees Celsius, Sundernagar at minus 0.7 degrees Celsius and Bhuntar at 0.2 degrees Celsius. Cold weather conditions prevail in Punjab, Haryana

Intense cold weather conditions prevailed in most parts of Punjab and Haryana today, with a thick blanket of fog reducing visibility and causing inconvenience to commuters. The joint capital Chandigarh shivered at 8.5 degrees, two degrees above normal, an official of the MeT department said here. Gurdaspur in Punjab was the coldest place in the region with a low of 4 degrees Celsius, he said. Among other places in Punjab, Amritsar recorded the minimum temperature at 8.9 degrees while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded 9.1 degrees Celsius each, up to three degrees above normal. Pathankot, Halwara, Adampur and Bathinda experienced cold conditions at 8.7 degrees, 8.5 degrees, 8 degrees and 6.6 degrees Celsius, respectively. Dry spell in Kashmir likely to end in next couple of days

The intense cold wave continued in Kashmir today with mercury staying several degrees below the freezing point, though the dry spell in the region may end in the next couple of days. The Met department has forecast rains or snowfall in isolated places tomorrow in Kashmir and fairly widespread downpour on Monday. If the forecast comes good, it will end the dry spell this winter which has now entered the seventh week -- an unusual occurrence in Kashmir during January when chances of snowfall are maximum. Gulmarg, the famous skiing resort in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 8.3 degrees Celsius. It was the coldest recorded place in the valley last night. Kargil town, in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, saw the mercury rise by nearly three degrees last night. Cold wave disrupts trains services in Delhi

Up to 21 trains were cancelled, 23 were rescheduled and 55 arrived late due to low visibility in the capital, on the account of foggy conditions on Friday.As per the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature was 26 degree Celsius while the minimum was seven degrees.Several parts of North India, including Delhi and the adjoining National Capital Region, have been witnessing a dense fog and fall in temperature, affecting the normal life besides rail and road traffic.

Mercury still below 10 degree in Kandhamal

There seems to be no respite from cold for the people of Kandhamal, as the mercury level continued to remain below 10 degrees Celsius across the district since one month. The met department also predicted this cold wave condition in interior Odisha is likely to continue till January 31. Phulbani, the district headquarters of Kandhamal, today recorded 4 degrees Celsius as minimum temperature and continued to remain as the coldest place in the state for last fortnight. The highest maximum temperature of 31.8 degree Celsius was recorded at Malkangiri, the met office said in its bulletin. While Phulbani, Sundergarh (9) and Jharsuguda (9.5) recorded minimum temperature below 10 degrees Celsius, six other places recorded temperature between 10 degrees Celsius to 11 degrees Celsius. These places were Angul (10), Hirakud (10.1), Kenonjhar and Sambalpur (10.2 each), Bhawanipatna (10.5) and Bolangir (10.8).

Biting cold persists in Himachal; dense fog alert issued

Biting cold conditions persisted in Himachal as the mercury hovered around the freezing point at most places, while dense fog engulfed the mid and lower hills, reducing visibility. Two people were injured in a mishap when their car veered off the road due to thick fog in Rajgarh area of Sirmaur district, police said. Sikkim shivers as snow fall continues

Chilly weather conditions prevailed today in most parts of Sikkim with snow fall continuing in higher altitude areas, met department officials said. Areas such as Nathula and Changu in East district, and Lachen and Lachung in North district received snowfall for the third consecutive day as a result icy winds were blowing across Sikkim. Gyalshing in West district remained the coldest place with minimum temperature of 4.7 degrees Celsius, followed by 4.8 in Gangtok (East district), 5.6 in Namchi (South district) and 8.6 in Mangan (North district), the officials said. Snowfall is likely to continue in in the higher altitude for two more days, they added.

Delhi enveloped by dense fog on R-Day

People travelling to Rajpath to watch the Republic Day parade had to drive through dense fog this morning in the national capital where the mercury settled at 18.8 degrees Celsius, four notches below season's average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 7 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. According to the MeT department, the visibility was recorded 100 metres at 5.30 am which further dipped below 50 metres at 8.30 am. The humidity oscillated between 100 and 66 per cent throughout the day and the weatherman has forecast dense fog in the morning tomorrow. "The skies will remain clear. The minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to hover around seven degrees and 19 degrees Celsius respectively," a MeT official said. Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 18.4 and 8.8 degrees Celsius respectively.

Dry weather in UP; Agra coldest at 4.8 degrees Celsius

The weather today remained dry in Uttar Pradesh with shallow to moderate fog occurring at many places and dense to very dense fog at a few places in the state. According to the meteorological department, cold wave conditions occurred at isolated places in eastern Uttar Pradesh. On Thursday, day temperatures rose appreciably in Agra while night temperatures fell in Faizabad, Allahabad and Lucknow. "They were below the normal mark in Faizabad, Lucknow, Allahabad, Moradabad and Agra," the official said. The lowest minimum temperature in the state was recorded 4.8 degrees Celsius in Agra. Weather will be most likely dry, and shallow to moderate fog is expected at isolated places in the state on January 28, the MeT department predicted.

No respite from cold in Punjab, Haryana

Thick blanket of fog enveloped most parts of Punjab and Haryana as cold wave continued unabated in both the states. Union Territory Chandigarh, joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, shivered at 7.2 degree Celsius, one degree above normal, a MeT department official said here. Among other places in Haryana, Ambala, Hisar and Karnal experienced cold weather conditions at 8, 7.7 and 8.7 degrees Celsius respectively. Minimum of Narnaul, Rohtak, Bhiwani and Sirsa settled at 5, 7.3, 7.6 and 7.9 degrees Celsius respectively. In Punjab, Amritsar braved cold weather at 7.4 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their lows at 9.5 and 9.6 degrees Celsius respectively -- three notches above normal. Pathankot, Halwara, Bathinda, Faridkot, Gurdaspur and Adampur recorded their minimums at 4.7, 8.8, 8, 8.8, 4.5 and 6.4 degrees Celsius respectively.

No relief from freezing cold in Kashmir

There was no relief from cold wave conditions in Kashmir as mercury stayed several degrees below freezing point in most parts of the valley. Kargil town in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir saw the mercury rise by three degrees last night but settled at a bone chilling minus 17.8 degrees Celsius, an official of the Meteorological Department here said. He said Kargil continued to be the coldest recorded place in the state. The nearby Leh town was the second coldest as the mercury there settled at a low of minus 6.1 degrees Celsius, up by over four degrees from minus 10.5 degrees Celsius the previous night. He said Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.9 degrees Celsius last night, up from minus 5.7 degrees Celsius the previous night. The night temperature in Kokernag town in south Kashmir settled at minus 1.3 degrees Celsius last night, the official said. He said Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 5.1 .

Max & Min temperatures to rise in Bihar: MeT

The Met department today predicted a gradual rise in both maximum and minimum temperatures in Bihar in next two to three days as people across the state, including the state capital, witnessed a sunny day. The state may witness a gradual increase in both maximum and minimum temperatures in days to come because of the season change, a Met official said, adding, that the increase in temperature is quite normal and it is witnessed after Sarswati puja every year. As per the MeT bulletin, among the major cities Bhagalpur registered a highest minimum temperature of 10.7 degrees Celsius against yesterday's 7.6 degrees Celsius.
