Light rains lash several parts of Delhi

Lights rains lashed several parts of the national capital today bringing the mercury down by eight notches, making it a cold day for Delhiites. The maximum temperature was recorded at 17 degrees Celsius, four notches below the season's average while the minimum temperature settled at 9.4 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal. The Safdarjung observatory, recording of which is considered the official figure for the city, received 4.4 mm rains till 5.30 PM while areas under Lodhi Road, Palam, Ridge and Ayanagar recorded 4.7 mm, 1, 1.8 and 5.6 mm rains rains during the same period, a Meteorological department official said. The humidity oscillated between 100 and 69 per cent. The Met office has forecast overcast skies along with the possibility of dense fog in the morning tomorrow. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 20 and 6 degrees Celsius," the weatherman said.

Light rains in some parts of Rajasthan

Light rains occurred at some places in Rajasthan due to western disturbances, with Mount Abu recording the coldest at 6.4 degrees Celsius, a MeT official said today. So where Jaipur recorded 2 mm of rainfall, traces of rain and thunderstorm were witnessed in Sriganganagar, Ajmer, Pilani, Churu, Anupgarh, Dausa and Alwar. According to the MeT department, state's sole hill station Mount Abu recorded coldest with 6.4 degree Celsius In plains, Alwar recorded 6.2 degree Celsius followed by 8.2 degrees Celsius in Sriganganagar, 9.8 degrees Celsius in Jaisalmer, 10.2 degrees Celsius in Dabok, 12.1 degrees Celsius in Jodhpur and 12.6 degrees Celsius in Jaipur. The maximum temperature hovered between 21 and 29 degrees Celsius. A dip in the minimum and maximum temperature has been predicted in next 24 hours, the MeT official informed.

Overcast conditions in Kashmir Valley

Overcast conditions today brightened the chances of a downpour in Kashmir Valley where people are hoping for an end to the month-long dry spell. Clouds appeared this morning after residents of the valley experienced unusually bright sunshine for more than two weeks. The MET department has forecast rain or snowfall at isolated placed today. Kashmir has been going through extremely dry and cold weather conditions this winter, leading to health-related problems among children and elderly. Kargil town, in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, continued to shiver as the mercury there settled at a low of minus 19.2 degrees Celsius last night, slightly down from minus 18.8 degrees Celsius the previous night, an official of the Meteorological Department here said. He said Kargil continued to be the coldest recorded place in the state. Drizzle in Delhi; poor visibility affects train services

Fog, humid weather and drizzle played spoilsport in the national capital on the day of the full dress rehearsal for Republic Day celebrations, even as poor visibility hit train services. The minimum temperature in the city settled at 9.4 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal, a MeT department official said. Around 11 am, the city received drizzle after traces of rainfall was reported overnight, he said. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 21 degrees Celsius. "The relative humidity level recorded at 8:30 am was 84 per cent while the visibility dropped to 800 m," the weatherman said. At 6 am, as many as 16 north-bound trains stood cancelled. Twenty three trains were running late while two were rescheduled, a senior railway ministry official said. Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 25.2 and 5.9 degrees Celsius, respectively.

No relief from intense cold in HP

Most parts of Himachal Pradesh reeled under a piercing cold wave even though the sun shone brightly. Minimum temperatures hovered around the freezing point at many places. Arctic conditions prevailed in the high-altitude tribal areas, which recorded the mercury between -12 and -20 degrees Celsius. Keylong in tribal Lahaul and Spiti recorded a low of -6.9 deg C. Thick ground frost occurred in the mid and higher hills. Water pipes froze and burst, while fog engulfed the towns along the rivers in the morning. The MeT office forecast rain, thundershowers or snow at isolated places in lower, mid and higher hills tomorrow and dry weather in the region over the next five days up to January 28. Manali, Bhuntar, Kalpa, Sundernagar and Solan shivered under freezing conditions with the mercury dipping to -1, 0.1, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.8 degrees, while Una recorded a minimum of 4 degrees, followed by Nahan 5.7, Shimla 6 and Dharamsala 6.8.

Lights rains likely to bring down temps in Delhi tomorrow

The national capital is likely to experince a cold day tomorrow with the MeT office here predicting light rains. The minimum temperature today settled at 5.9 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average while the maximum was recorded at 25.2 degrees, four notches above the normal, a Meteorological (MeT) department official said. The humidity was between 100 and 47 per cent. The MeT office has forecast partly cloudy skies for tomorrow along with the possibility of moderate fog and light rains towards the afternoon and evening. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 22 and 9 degrees Celsius," the weatherman said. Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 25.8 and 5 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Met forecasts scattered fog in Bihar for next two days

Bhagalpur was the coldest place in Bihar today at 3.5 degree celsius and the met department has forecast scattered fog in the morning in the state for the next two days. The met office said that Bhagalpur and Purnea may witness dense fog or very dense fog tomorrow morning. Patna may witness dense fog in the morning followed by mainly clear sky later and Gaya may witness fog or mist in the morning and mainly clear sky later, it said. The foggy weather situation is likely to improve in the state after two to three days as the maximum temperature is on the rise, the met office said adding cold day condition is not expected in Bihar. Cold day condition is declared when the minimum temperature touches 10 degree celsius or lower and the maximum temperature is 4.5-6.4 degree celsius below its normal, it said. Gaya recorded a minimum temperature of 6 degrees celsius, while Patna and Purnea registered 7.4 and 8 degrees celsius respectively as their minimum, the weather bulletin .

Cold wave conditions continue to prevail in UP

Cold wave conditions continued to prevail in Uttar Pradesh with Muzaffarnagar recording the lowest temperature at 1.6 degrees Celsius in the state. The day temperature was below normal in the Gorakhpur division, while the night temperatures were below normal in the Meerut, Varanasi, Faizabad, Allahabad and Bareilly divisions, the weather office said. Weather was dry over the state, where cold wave conditions continued to prevail despite bright sunshine. Muzaffarnagar recorded the lowest temperature of 1.6 degrees Celsius in the state. The Meteorological office has forecast rain or thundershowers at few places in the eastern Uttar Pradesh tomorrow.

Karnal, Ludhiana coldest in Punjab, Haryana

Punjab and Haryana reeled under cold weather conditions today with Karnal and Ludhiana being the coldest places in the region with a low of 3 degrees Celsius each. Union Territory of Chandigarh, the joint capital of both Punjab and Haryana, recorded its low at 7 degrees Celsius, an official of the MeT department said here. In Punjab, Amritsar recorded its minimum at 3.2 degrees Celsius while Patiala braved cold weather conditions at 5 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal. Pathankot, Adampur, Halwara, Bathinda, Faridkot and Gurdaspur recorded their lows at 5.3, 3.4, 5.3, 5, 5.5 and 6.5 degrees Celsius. In Haryana, minimum temperatures in Ambala, Hisar and Rohtak settled at 7, 3.6 and 5.4 degrees Celsius, respectively. Minimum temperatures in Narnaul and Bhiwani were recorded at 3.5 and 7.5 degrees Celsius. According to the MeT department, fog was witnessed in some areas including Karnal district in Haryana.

Sri Ganganagar coldest in Rajasthan at 4 degree Celsius

Sri Ganganagar was today recorded as the coldest place in Rajasthan with a minimum temperature of 4 degree Celsius followed by Alwar which registered a night temperature of 4.2 degrees Celsius. Mount Abu, Churu, and Sikar recorded a minimum of 5, 5.8 and, 6.5 degree Celsius respectively while the night temperature in other places was between 7.6 to 11.4 degrees, according to the MeT department here. The MeT department has forecast similar weather conditions for the next 24 hours.

Kargil records -18.8 deg C as J&K shivers under sub-zero temp

There was no respite from cold wave conditions in Kashmir division today, with the minimum temperature remaining several degrees below freezing point. Kargil town, in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, shivered at a low of minus 18.8 degrees Celsius last night, an official of the Meteorological Department (MeT) said here. The nearby Leh town was the second coldest region in the state as the mercury settled at a low of minus 14.3 degrees Celsius, marginally up from minus 14.6 degrees Celsius last night. Srinagar, summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius last night, the MeT said. The night temperature in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, while the neighbouring Kokernag town registered a minimum of 0.9 degrees Celsius, the official said. Dense fog affects train services in Delhi

As many as 10 trains were cancelled, 22 delayed and three rescheduled due to low visibility caused by the persisting cold wave here.As per the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature will be 26 degree Celsius while the minimum is expected to fall down to six degrees.Furthermore, a moderate layer of fog is expected to be seen during the day.Several parts of North India, including Delhi and the adjoining National Capital Region, have been witnessing a dense fog and fall in temperature, affecting the normal life besides rail and road traffic.

Avalanche warning in J-K, cold conditions prevail in North

Severe cold conditions continued unabated in northern parts of the country today with an avalanche warning being issued for 15 districts of Jammu and Kashmir, including two in the Ladakh region, which is experiencing extreme temperatures. The situation was no better in Himachal Pradesh, with the mercury in high-altitude areas in the state hovering between minus 12 and minus 18 degrees Celsius. The Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) has warned of a low-danger level 1 and level 2 avalanche in the districts, with the Jammu and Kashmir government asking people to take precautionary measures. The warning has been issued for areas in the higher reaches of Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, Udhampur, Anantnag, Kulgam and Budgam for the next 24 hours, an official in Srinagar said.
