Biting cold wave conditions continue unabated in Himachal

Biting cold wave conditions continued unabated in most parts of Himachal Pradesh as night temperatures remained low and hovered around freezing point at many places. The weather remained dry and bright sunshine greeted the people, making the day warm and pleasant but there was no relief during the night. The high altitude tribal areas groaned under freezing cold wave conditions with mercury ranging between minus 12 and minus 18 degrees Celsius while Keylong recorded a low of minus 6.8 degrees Celsius. Manali shivered at minus 0.6 degrees Celsius while Bhuntar and Sundernagar reeled at zero degrees Celsius and 1.1 degrees Celsius, followed by 2.7 degrees Celsius in Solan, 2.8 degrees Celsius in Una, 3.0 degrees Celsius in Kalpa, 5.0 degrees Celsius in Palampur, 6.5 degrees Celsius in Nahan, 6.8 degrees Celsius in Dharamshala and 7.6 degrees Celsius in Shimla. Sabour coldest place in Bihar at 6.7 degree Celsius

Sabour in Bhagalpur district was the coldest place in Bihar today at 6.7 degree Celsius while many areas in the state witnessed a cold day. The minimum temperature at Gaya was 7.2 degree Celsius while in Patna and Bhagalpur it was 7.6 degree Celsius and in Purnea it was 8.3 degree Celsius, a Met bulletin said. Chapra, Muzaffarpur and Forbesganj in Araria district witnessed a cold day while severe cold day was observed in Supual today, the Met bulletin said. Cold day condition is declared when the minimum temperature touches 10 degrees Celsius or lower and the maximum temperature is 4.5-6.4 degree Celsius below its normal, the met office said In its forecast, the Met office said that Bhagalpur and Purnea may witness dense fog or very dense fog tomorrow morning. Cold weather continues in Pb, Haryana; Hisar coldest

Most places in Punjab and Haryana reeled under cold weather conditions today with Hisar being the coldest in the region with a low at 2.7 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh recorded a low at 5.9 degrees Celsius, local Met department said. Among other places in Haryana, Ambala, Narnaul and Karnal experienced cold weather at 6.2, 3.2 and 4 degrees Celsius respectively, up to two notches below normal. Minimum temperatures in Rohtak and Bhiwani settled at 4 and 6.5 degrees Celsius respectively, upto three notches below normal. Among other places in Punjab, Amritsar recorded it's minimum at 3.8 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their lows at 4.2 and 5.7 degrees Celsius. Pathankot, Halwara, Adampur, Bathinda, Faridkot and Gurdaspur experienced cold conditions at 6.5, 5.4, 3.3, 4.4, 5 and 6.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

Kashmir shivers under sub-zero temp; Kargil at -19 deg C

Cold wave conditions persisted in the Kashmir division, including the Ladakh region, as the minimum temperature remained several degrees below the freezing point. Kargil continued to be the coldest recorded place in the state as the mercury there settled at minus 20.2 degrees Celsius last night, an official of the Meteorological Department here said. The nearby Leh town also shivered with the mercury there settling at minus 14.6 degrees Celsius over a degree down from minus 13.5 degrees Celsius last night. He said Srinagar the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.1 degrees Celsius last night marginally up from minus 4.3 degrees Celsius the previous night. The night temperature in Qazigund, in south Kashmir, settled at a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius, while the neighbouring Kokernag town registered a low of minus 1.7 degrees Celsius last night, the official said. He said Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.6 .

Maharashtra to launch weather advisory system for farmers

The Maharashtra government is all set to introduce a system to issue daily district-wise weather advisory to farmers across the state. "The system has a capacity to generate weather alerts for every ten minutes, if required. The state is taking a step forward to explore the possibility of issuing weather advisory for farmers to minimise their crop losses due to adverse weather conditions," Agriculture Commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh told PTI. "Going by our current preparations and capacity to handle the data, I think we can introduce a weather advisory system," the commissioner said. "The government is likely to announce it next week," Singh said. The agriculture commissionerate conceived the proposal a few years back and it has completed setting up of weather stations at 2,050 sites across Maharashtra, he said. Phulbani still coldest place in Odisha

Phulbani in Kandahmal district continued to remain as the coldest place in Odisha with the mercury level remaining at 3.5 degrees Celsius today. The minimum temperature at Daringbadi, a hill station in the same district, was recorded at 8.5 degrees Celsius, the met office said here. Apart from Phulbani, intense cold wave conditions prevailed in Belghar, Kotgarh and G Udaygiri areas of the district. Severe frosting were reported from these areas. The minimum temperature dipped to 11.4 degrees Celsius in Bhubaneswar against yesterday's 11.5 degrees Celsius. In Cuttack the temperature was 11 degrees Celsius.

Bhagalpur records lowest minimum temp at 4.8 degrees Celsius

Bhagalpur today recorded Bihar's lowest minimum temperature at 4.8 degrees Celsius, seven notches below normal minimum temperature, the Met office said. In its forecast, the Met department said that Bhagalpur, along with Purnea, may witness tomorrow dense fog or very dense fog in the morning with cold day conditions. While Patna may witness dense fog in the morning followed by mainly clear sky later, Gaya may witness fog or mist in the morning and mainly clear sky later, it said. Cold day condition is declared when the minimum temperature touches 10 degrees Celsius or lower and the maximum temperature is 4.5 - 6.4 degrees Celsius below its normal, the Met office said. As per the Met bulletin, Purnea recorded minimum temperature of 7.3 degrees Celsius while Gaya and Patna registered 7.4 and 8.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Cold wave prevails in north India, temps drop in Kashmir

Cold wave conditions persisted today in most parts of north India with the mercury further dropping in Kashmir and high-altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh recording sub-zero temperatures. Normal life remained hit in Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil as the minimum there settled at minus 19.6 degrees Celsius with cold wave tightening its grip on the Valley and the Ladakh region of the state. Srinagar - the state's summer capital - recorded minus 4.3 degrees Celsius as minimum temperatures dropped across Kashmir, except in the ski-resort of Gulmarg, Meteorological (MeT) department officials said. Cold weather continues in UP

Severe cold was recorded at isolated places in eastern Uttar Pradesh with Najibabad and Muzaffarnagar recording the lowest minimum temperatures at 5.8 degrees Celsius. While dense to very dense fog occurred at isolated places over eastern UP, shallow to moderate fog covered the isolated places in western part of the state, the Met office said. On Friday, day temperatures appreciably rose in Varanasi and Faizabad, and were above normal in Kanpur and Lucknow. The night temperatures were above normal in Gorakhpur, below normal in Moradabad and normal in remaining parts of the state. The Met has forecast shallow to moderate fog at isolated places over the state on January 22. Rain or thundershowers are very likely at isolated places over east UP and at a few places in west UP on January 23.

Cold weather conditions prevailed in most parts of Punjab and Haryana, with Admapur in Jalandhar being the coldest in the region with a low of 2.1 degrees Celsius. Chandigah, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, braved cold weather at 6.9 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal, an official of the Meteorological department said here. Among other places in Haryana, Ambala, Hisar and Karnal experienced cold weather at 8.6, 5.4 and 5.5 degrees Celsius respectively. Cold wave conditions persisted in most parts of the Kashmir valley as the mercury continued its downward spiral, even as there was marginal respite in the Ladakh region. Chilly conditions to prevail in Bihar in the next 48 hours

People of Bihar may not get respite from chilly conditions at some places in the state in the next 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said today. According to a warning issued by the IMD, a few places in the state may witness cold day to severe cold day conditions also. "Coldwaveconditionsverylikelyatisolatedplaces in OdishaandBihar on January 20 and 21. Phulbani remains coldest place in Odisha

Phulbani in Odisha's Kandahmal district continued to remain as the coldest place in the state with the mercury level remaining at 3 degrees Celsius for the last two days. While the minimum temperature in Phulbani was 3 degrees Celcius, the minimum temperature at Daringbadi, of the same district, was 6.5 degrees Celcius. Kargil goes numb at -20; fog, chill return to plains

Normal life in the Kashmir Valley was paralysed by the biting cold, while fog and chill returned to the plains today. Life crawled in Kargil at frigid -20 degrees Celsius even as the cold wave tightened grip on the valley and Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir. The nearby Leh town quivered at -13.8 degrees Celsius. Amritsar, Adampur reel under biting cold

After temporary respite, cold weather conditions were back at many places in Punjab today. Fog reduced visibility at a few places in the morning including Hisar, Karnal, Rohtak and Bhiwani in Haryana and Amritsar in Punjab, a MeT department official said today. Amritsar (3.4 degrees Celsius), Adampur (3.5 degrees Celsius), Bathinda (4.5 degrees Celsius), Pathankot (5.2 degrees Celsius), Gurdaspur (5.4 degrees Celsius), Halwara (6 degrees Celsius) and Faridkot (6.4 degrees Celsius) in Punjab were among the places which reeled under cold weather conditions recording below the normal minimum temperature. Cold wave conditions persist in UP

Cold wave conditions persisted in many parts of Uttar Pradesh where dense to very dense fog occurred at several places, the weather office said today. Lakhimpur Kheri recorded the lowest temperature at four degrees Celsius. Night and day temperature rose in Faizabad, Lucknow, Bareilly, Moradabad, Agra and Meerut divisions, giving some respite from chilly weather conditions. Dense to very dense fog is likely in some parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh tomorrow, the Met office predicted.
