Intensified cold conditions prevail in Kashmir

Bright sunshine provided slight relief to residents of Kashmir in the daytime but Kargil town continued to reel under intense cold conditions with the mercury staying six degrees below the freezing point The minimum temperature fell to a bone-chilling minus 18.5 degrees Celsius in Kargil town yesterday, an official of the MET department said today. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded its coldest night this winter at minus 6.1 degrees Celsius -- marginally down from minus 6 degrees Celsius recorded the previous night. Bright sunshine during the day, however, has come as a bit of relief for the residents as the maximum temperature yesterday settled at 10.2 degrees Celsius. Cold wave: 2 die in UP's Muzaffarnagar and Shamli

Two people have died due to intense cold wave conditions in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts, according to the administration. A 42-year-old man, identified as Pritam Singh, collapsed due to cold at his home in Wajidpur village yesterday. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead, a report from the district headquarter said. In another incident, Prem Lata (65) died due to the harsh weather prevailing in Kandhla town in Shamli district last evening. Looking at the continuing cold spell in the region, the district authorities of Muzaffarnagar and Shamli have ordered for schools to be shut till January 9. Earlier, five people also died following the sweeping cold conditions in the two districts on January 5. The MeT office yesterday forecasted dense to very dense fog at a few places, and cold to severe cold waves in the state.

Cold morning in Delhi, mercury dips to 5 deg C

It was a cold morning in the city today with the minimum temperature settling at 5 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was two notches below the season's average, at 5 degrees Celsius, said a MeT department official. Relative humidity was 97 per cent at 8.30 AM. Fog affected the movement of the trains headed towards north India. Visibility was lowered due to moderate fog in many parts of the city. At 8.30 AM, the Palam station recorded a visibility of 400 metres while it was 800 metres at Safdarjung, the official said. According to a railways official, 50 north-bound trains were running late while eight were rescheduled. Eighteen others were cancelled. The MeT office predicted a clear sky for the rest of the day. Maximum temperature is expected to settle around 21 degrees Celsius. Yesterday, the maximum temperature settled at 20.4 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 6.4 degrees Celsius.

Eastern states reeling under cold conditions

Many areas in the eastern states reeled under cold conditions with Gaya in Bihar and Daringbadi in Odisha recording the lowest temperatures. In Bihar, Gaya recorded the state's lowest minimum temperature at 2.8 degrees Celsius and Bhagalpur at 3.1 degrees Celsius. The state capital Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 6.1 degrees Celsius. The Patna Meteorological Centre said in its bulletin that severe cold day condition prevailed at Bhagalpur, Purnea, Chapra, Supaul, Forbisganj and Muzaffarpur. The steel city of Jamshedpur and adjoining areas in Jharkhand today experienced the coldest day of the season and the East Singhbhum district administration has asked schools to declare holiday for the next three days for lower classes. North India schools to remain closed due to cold waves

Uttar Pradesh continue to reel under severe cold

The Uttar Pradesh capital continued to reel under severe cold conditions, with the mercury dipping to 2.6 degrees Celsius, five notches below the normal limit. The chilly weather has prompted the local authorities to open the schools only after 10 a.m. till Jan 13. According to the MeT office, Lucknow recorded a high of 19.3 degrees Celsius, two degrees below the normal mark. Bahraich was the coldest place in the state, with a low of 2.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Fursatganj (Rae Bareli) at 2.4 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Basti, Kanpur, Agra and Allahabad was recorded at 3.0, 3.5, 3.7 and 5.0 degrees Celsius respectively. The MeT office has forecast dense to very dense fog at a few places, with cold to severe cold waves. Ground frost is also likely at isolated places in the state, the MeT said.

Kashmir experiences season's coldest night, Delhi improves

Kashmir division, including Ladakh region, experienced the coldest night of the season in the state as the cold wave sweeping the Valley tightened its grip, while the minimum and maximum temperatures in the national capital Delhi rose by a few notches, Met officials said. Dense fog across the northern plains of India obstructed vision and hindered movement of vehicles and train services. Around 50 trains were late, 16 rescheduled and 39 cancelled till 6pm, a senior Indian Railways official said in New Delhi. Foggy, cold weather in Delhi

Foggy and cold conditions prevailed in the city though the minimum temperature rose marginally. The national capital recorded a low of 4.2 degrees Celsius, the season's lowest temperature, yesterday. Delhi savoured a sun-washed afternoon which pushed the mercury to 20.7 degrees Celsius. The city had a low of 6.4 degrees Celsius. Poor visibility affected the movement of trains. 50 of them were late, 16 rescheduled and 39 cancelled till 6 pm, a senior railway official said. The relative humidity oscillated between 100 and 55 per cent. The weatherman forecast a clear sky with moderate fog tomorrow morning and mist during daytime.

Cold wave: Hry extends winter holidays in schools till Jan 14

In view of intense cold wave conditions prevailing in Haryana, the state government has decided to extend winter holidays in all schools up to January 14. State Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma today said in view of the severe cold prevailing in the state, all state- run, government-aided and private schools will remain closed up to January 14. Notably, most parts of Haryana are reeling under biting cold for over a week, with minimum temperatures hovering between 2 degrees Celsius and 6 degrees Celsius while maximum temperatures have been settling in the range of 14 degrees Celsius to 18 degrees Celsius. Fog also persisted at many places in the state, particularly in the southern parts, reducing visibility in the early morning and late evening hours.

Severe cold conditions prevail in Rajasthan

Severe cold conditions kept normal life out of gear in Rajasthan where Churu was recorded as the coldest place, registering a minimum of 1 degrees Celsius. Mount Abu and Sikar shivered at 2 degrees Celsius while Pilani, Sriganganagar, Bhilwara, Chittogrgarh and Bikaner recorded minimum of 3, 3.1, 4, 5 and 5.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. Night temperatures in other places was between 6 to 10.3 degrees Celsius, according to Meteorological Department here. Dense fog also occurred at isolated areas in the state.

Cold wave intensifies in Pb, Hry; Adampur coldest at 0.7 deg C

Severe cold wave was sweeping Punjab and Haryana for over a week further intensified today with minimum temperature hovering in the range of 2-5 degrees Celsius at most places. Adampur in Punjab was the coldest place in the two states with a low of 0.7 degrees Celsius, a MeT Department official said here. Freezing cold also swept Narnaul in Haryana, which recorded a low of 1.5 degrees Celsius. The official said that barring south Haryana including Rohtak, Hisar and Bhiwani and isolated places in Punjab, fog had lifted from rest of the region. "Clear skies led to sudden fall in minimum temperature although the maximum temperature increased slightly. Fog is also likely to lift from remaining parts of Haryana and Punjab in the next two days," he said. Piercing cold also swept Amritsar in Punjab, which recorded a low of 2.6 degrees Celsius, down one notch against normal. Night temperature dips in Jammu region

The minimum temperature in most places in Jammu region recorded a dip with people in the city of temples waking up to 4 degree Celsius three degrees below normal during this part of the season. However, the morning chill vanished with bright sun appearing for the third day providing much needed relief to the people from the cold night.
