Cold wave intensifies in Pb, Hry; Adampur coldest at 0.7 deg C

Severe cold wave was sweeping Punjab and Haryana for over a week further intensified today with minimum temperature hovering in the range of 2-5 degrees Celsius at most places. Adampur in Punjab was the coldest place in the two states with a low of 0.7 degrees Celsius, a MeT Department official said here. Freezing cold also swept Narnaul in Haryana, which recorded a low of 1.5 degrees Celsius. The official said that barring south Haryana including Rohtak, Hisar and Bhiwani and isolated places in Punjab, fog had lifted from rest of the region. "Clear skies led to sudden fall in minimum temperature although the maximum temperature increased slightly. Fog is also likely to lift from remaining parts of Haryana and Punjab in the next two days," he said. Piercing cold also swept Amritsar in Punjab, which recorded a low of 2.6 degrees Celsius, down one notch against normal. Night temperature drops across Kashmir Valley, Ladakh

Srinagar and most other places in Kashmir division, including Ladakh region, experienced the coldest night of the winter so far last night as cold tightened its grip in the state. The MET Office has forecast dry weather for the week ahead. Night temperature dips in Jammu region

The minimum temperature in most places in Jammu region recorded a dip with people in the city of temples waking up to 4 degree Celsius three degrees below normal during this part of the season. However, the morning chill vanished with bright sun appearing for the third day providing much needed relief to the people from the cold night. The city has registered the season's lowest minimum temperature of 2.7 degrees Celsius on January 4. Against the previous night's 5.1 degrees Celsius, the night temperature fell in Jammu city and settled at 4 degrees Celsius, a spokesperson of MET department said. Severe cold condition in many parts of Bihar

Severe cold condition was experienced in most parts of Bihar today and the weatherman forecast more chill in the next few days. Patna experienced cold day conditions, while Bhagalpur, Purnea, Muzaffarpur, Supaul and Farbesganj witnessed severe cold day conditions, the regional meteorological centre said in its bulletin. The Met office has forecast very dense fog from midnight to morning hours at major cities like Gaya and Bhagalpur, apart from the state capital. Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 6.6 degrees Celsius with the maximum at 15.8 degrees Celsius, the bulletin said. The minimum temperature at Bhagalpur was 4.0 degrees Celsius, while the maximum was recorded at 14.5 degrees Celsius. The minimum and maximum temperatures in Purnea were 5.6 degrees Celsius and 14.6 degrees Celsius, respectively, the bulletin said.

Intense cold wave grips in Himachal Pradesh

Intense cold wave swept the hills and valleys of Himachal Pradesh today as the mercury dropped by a few notches, with state capital Shimla experiencing its coldest night of the season at minus 1.4 degrees Celsius. Manali and Solan, too, saw temperatures drop to minus 5.4 degrees Celsius and zero degrees Celsius respectively. High-altitude tribal areas reeled under severe cold conditions that affected normal life. Lakes, springs and rivulets froze, drastically reducing the discharge of water in snow fed rivers. Keylong in tribal Lahaul and Spiti recorded a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius while Bhuntar, Sundernagar, Palampur, Una, Dharamsala and Nahan shivered at 0.1 degrees Celsius, 0.2 degrees Celsius, 2 degrees Celsius, 2.4 degrees Celsius, 5 degrees Celsius and 5.7 degrees Celsius respectively. North India reels under intense cold; fog disrupts rail, air

Cold wave swept parts of north India with snowfall in the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley, and Delhi recording its lowest minimum temperature of the season at 4.2 degrees Celsius, while dense fog continued to disrupt rail and air traffic. Punjab and Haryana reeled under intense cold wave while dense fog engulfed most parts of both the states delaying some trains and affecting flight operations. In Delhi, due to poor visibility, the Railways had to cancel 36 trains, reschedule 30 while 85 trains were running late. High-altitude areas of Jammu region experienced light snowfall over the past few days, as a result of which several parts, including Bhaderwah and Banihal, were reeling under sub-zero night temperature. Intense cold, fog in Rajasthan

Intense cold wave conditions prevailed in Rajasthan, with Sriganganagar recording a low of 1.9 degrees Celsius, a MeT office spokesperson said today. Bikaner, Dabok, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Jaipur and Barmer recorded minimum of 4.6, 6.5, 7.2, 7.9, 8.1 and 10.7 degrees Celsius respectively. Dense to very dense fog also covered the isolated parts of the state, the Met said, adding the situation would remain the same during next 24 hours.

Dense fog occurs at many places in UP

Weather was dry in Uttar Pradesh with dense to very dense fog occurring at many places in the state. According to the Meteorological department, cold wave occurred at isolated places in the state. Yesterday, day temperatures fell in Lucknow, Meerut Varanasi and Bareilly. It was below normal in Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Faizabad, Lucknow, Bareilly and Agra. Night temperature fell in Moradabad. It was below normal in Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Kanpur and Moradabad. The lowest minimum temperature in the state was 2.6 degrees Celsius recorded at Fursatganj (Rae Bareli). Bright sun brings relief from cold in Jammu

Bright sunshine for the second day today brought some respite to the people here as the city recorded a low of 5.1 degrees Celsius, several notches above the season's lowest minimum temperature of 2.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday. A MeT office spokesperson said the minimum temperature in the city of temples registered a drop of 1.6 notches compared to the previous night to settle at 5.1 degrees Celsius 2.2 degrees below normal during this part of the season. The city had recorded the season's lowest of 2.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday but marked four degrees improvement on Friday due to cloud cover. A bright sun shone yesterday after remaining hidden behind the clouds over the past couple of days which led to almost five degrees increase in the day temperature which settled at 19.9 degrees Celsius, 1.8 degrees above normal during this part of the season. Cold wave prevails in Delhi

Delhi has been witnessing chilly winter mornings and nights for the last couple of days, and according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cold wave will continue to prevail in the national capital region.Operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) continue to be affected, owing to the grim weather.Hundreds of passengers at several railway stations in Delhi have also been left stranded after multiple trains have been cancelled, rescheduled, and delayed due to low visibility.Even today, 49 trains are arriving late, and 13 have been rescheduled due to the dense fog.Moreover, 18 trains have been cancelled.The minimum temperature recorded is six degrees Celsius, while the maximum is 21 degrees Celsius.The air quality in the national capital has also been keeping under 'very poor' category as the fog has not been allowing the particulate matter to disperse.

The temperature in north India is likely to drop further in the coming days, according to Manmohan Singh, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director, Shimla."Currently minimum temperature in Himachal is one - two degrees below the normal and temperature during day is normal. No significant western disturbance is expected in next one week. Temperature is likely to drop by one - two degrees in coming days," Singh told ANI.After fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, the cold wave has intensified in the region.Keylong in Lahaul Spiti is the coldest with temperature ranging around -7 degrees Celsius.Further, Kalpa in the Kinnaur district recorded -4 degrees Celsius.Popular hill stations Manali and Shimla recorded -2.4 degrees and 2.1 degrees Celsius respectively.The cold wave has left hundreds of passengers at several railway stations in north India stranded, after multiple trains have been cancelled, delayed and rescheduled for the last couple of days.
