Severe cold condition in many parts of Bihar

Severe cold condition was experienced in most parts of Bihar today and the weatherman forecast more chill in the next few days. Patna experienced cold day conditions, while Bhagalpur, Purnea, Muzaffarpur, Supaul and Farbesganj witnessed severe cold day conditions, the regional meteorological centre said in its bulletin. The Met office has forecast very dense fog from midnight to morning hours at major cities like Gaya and Bhagalpur, apart from the state capital. Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 6.6 degrees Celsius with the maximum at 15.8 degrees Celsius, the bulletin said. The minimum temperature at Bhagalpur was 4.0 degrees Celsius, while the maximum was recorded at 14.5 degrees Celsius. The minimum and maximum temperatures in Purnea were 5.6 degrees Celsius and 14.6 degrees Celsius, respectively, the bulletin said.

Intense cold wave grips in Himachal Pradesh

Intense cold wave swept the hills and valleys of Himachal Pradesh today as the mercury dropped by a few notches, with state capital Shimla experiencing its coldest night of the season at minus 1.4 degrees Celsius. Manali and Solan, too, saw temperatures drop to minus 5.4 degrees Celsius and zero degrees Celsius respectively. High-altitude tribal areas reeled under severe cold conditions that affected normal life. Lakes, springs and rivulets froze, drastically reducing the discharge of water in snow fed rivers. Keylong in tribal Lahaul and Spiti recorded a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius while Bhuntar, Sundernagar, Palampur, Una, Dharamsala and Nahan shivered at 0.1 degrees Celsius, 0.2 degrees Celsius, 2 degrees Celsius, 2.4 degrees Celsius, 5 degrees Celsius and 5.7 degrees Celsius respectively. North India reels under intense cold; fog disrupts rail, air

Cold wave swept parts of north India with snowfall in the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley, and Delhi recording its lowest minimum temperature of the season at 4.2 degrees Celsius, while dense fog continued to disrupt rail and air traffic. Punjab and Haryana reeled under intense cold wave while dense fog engulfed most parts of both the states delaying some trains and affecting flight operations. In Delhi, due to poor visibility, the Railways had to cancel 36 trains, reschedule 30 while 85 trains were running late. High-altitude areas of Jammu region experienced light snowfall over the past few days, as a result of which several parts, including Bhaderwah and Banihal, were reeling under sub-zero night temperature. Intense cold, fog in Rajasthan

Intense cold wave conditions prevailed in Rajasthan, with Sriganganagar recording a low of 1.9 degrees Celsius, a MeT office spokesperson said today. Bikaner, Dabok, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Jaipur and Barmer recorded minimum of 4.6, 6.5, 7.2, 7.9, 8.1 and 10.7 degrees Celsius respectively. Dense to very dense fog also covered the isolated parts of the state, the Met said, adding the situation would remain the same during next 24 hours.

Cold wave sweeps across Pb, Hry; fog affects normal life

Intense cold wave swept across Punjab and Haryana while dense fog engulfed most parts of both the states, affecting normal life. Foggy weather delayed some trains passing through Punjab and Haryana and also affected flight operations, officials said. Chandigarh airport recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 1.8 degrees Celsius, followed by Bathinda in Punjab which shivered at 1.9 degrees Celsius, the MeT department said. Adampur in Jalandhar district, Pathankot and Halwara recorded minimum temperatures of 2.3 degrees Celsius, 4 degrees Celsius and 4.3 degrees Celsius respectively. Among other places in Punjab, Amritsar experienced biting cold at 3 degree Celsius while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their respective minimum temperatures at 4.7 degrees Celsius and 4.6 degrees Celsius. Dense fog occurs at many places in UP

Weather was dry in Uttar Pradesh with dense to very dense fog occurring at many places in the state. According to the Meteorological department, cold wave occurred at isolated places in the state. Yesterday, day temperatures fell in Lucknow, Meerut Varanasi and Bareilly. It was below normal in Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Faizabad, Lucknow, Bareilly and Agra. Night temperature fell in Moradabad. It was below normal in Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Kanpur and Moradabad. The lowest minimum temperature in the state was 2.6 degrees Celsius recorded at Fursatganj (Rae Bareli). The MeT department said that the weather is most likely to remain dry, while shallow to moderate fog is likely at a few places in the state on January 8 and 9.

Bright sun brings relief from cold in Jammu

Bright sunshine for the second day today brought some respite to the people here as the city recorded a low of 5.1 degrees Celsius, several notches above the season's lowest minimum temperature of 2.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday. A MeT office spokesperson said the minimum temperature in the city of temples registered a drop of 1.6 notches compared to the previous night to settle at 5.1 degrees Celsius 2.2 degrees below normal during this part of the season. The city had recorded the season's lowest of 2.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday but marked four degrees improvement on Friday due to cloud cover. A bright sun shone yesterday after remaining hidden behind the clouds over the past couple of days which led to almost five degrees increase in the day temperature which settled at 19.9 degrees Celsius, 1.8 degrees above normal during this part of the season. Cold wave prevails in Delhi

Delhi has been witnessing chilly winter mornings and nights for the last couple of days, and according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cold wave will continue to prevail in the national capital region.Operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) continue to be affected, owing to the grim weather.Hundreds of passengers at several railway stations in Delhi have also been left stranded after multiple trains have been cancelled, rescheduled, and delayed due to low visibility.Even today, 49 trains are arriving late, and 13 have been rescheduled due to the dense fog.Moreover, 18 trains have been cancelled.The minimum temperature recorded is six degrees Celsius, while the maximum is 21 degrees Celsius.The air quality in the national capital has also been keeping under 'very poor' category as the fog has not been allowing the particulate matter to disperse.

Temperature likely to drop further in north India

The temperature in north India is likely to drop further in the coming days, according to Manmohan Singh, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director, Shimla."Currently minimum temperature in Himachal is one - two degrees below the normal and temperature during day is normal. No significant western disturbance is expected in next one week. Temperature is likely to drop by one - two degrees in coming days," Singh told ANI.After fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, the cold wave has intensified in the region.Keylong in Lahaul Spiti is the coldest with temperature ranging around -7 degrees Celsius.Further, Kalpa in the Kinnaur district recorded -4 degrees Celsius.Popular hill stations Manali and Shimla recorded -2.4 degrees and 2.1 degrees Celsius respectively.The cold wave has left hundreds of passengers at several railway stations in north India stranded, after multiple trains have been cancelled, delayed and rescheduled for the last couple of days.

Toria MSP at Rs 3900/qtl includes Rs 100 bonus this year: Govt

The government today clarified that the minimum support price (MSP) for toria, an oilseed similar to rapeseed, fixed at Rs 3,900 per quintal for the current year also includes bonus of Rs 100 per quintal. A corrigendum in this regard was issued by the Union Agriculture Ministry. The MSP has been fixed for the toria crop grown in the 2017-18 rabi season, which is underway, and to be harvested in 2018-19. Toria is cultivated in limited areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh. It is a short duration crop cultivated largely in Assam, Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal in the east mainly as winter crop. In Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttaranchal and western Uttar Pradesh, it is grown as a catch crop during September-December.

Cold wave conditions continue unabated in Himachal Pradesh

Intense cold wave conditions continued unabated today in Himachal Pradesh as high-altitude tribal and hill areas of the state received fresh snowfall. Bharmaur, Kothi and Mari received 3 cm of snowfall while Kalpa, Gondla and the upper Manali region received 2 cm of snow. Manali and its adjoining areas received light rains causing a marginal drop in the mercury, the MeT office said. Temperatures in high-altitude tribal areas were between minus 14 and minus 21 degrees Celsius while Keylong recorded a low of minus eight degrees Celsius. Kalpa recorded minus four degrees Celsius and Manali minus 2.6 degrees Celsius. Shimla and Una experienced their coldest night of the season with a low of 2.1 degrees Celsius and 2.2 degrees Celsius. Weather remained dry over Uttar Pradesh with dense to very dense fog occuring at many places, while shallow to moderate fog occurred at isolated places over the state. According to the Meteorological department, cold to severe cold conditions occurred at few places over the state. Yesterday, day temperatures fell in Moradabad and Meerut and were below normal in Varanasi, Lucknow, Allahbad, Kanpur and Jhansi. Night temperatures fell in Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Lucknow and Bareilly. The lowest minimum temperature in the state was 2.8 degrees Celsius recorded at Sultanpur and Fursatganj (Rae Bareli). Shallow to moderate fog is very likely at a few places over the state on January 6, January 7 and January 8.

Min temps increase in Rajasthan, Alwar coldest at 1.2 deg C

Minimum temperatures at most of the places in Rajasthan increased by 1 to 2 degree Celsius, while Alwar was the coldest in the state with a low of 1.2 degrees Celsius. According to the MeT office, Mount Abu recorded a minimum temperature of degrees Celsius, followed by Bhilwara 3.5 degrees Celsius, Sriganganagar 3.7 degrees Celsius, Pilani and Chittorgarh 4.6 degrees Celsius each, Dabok 4.8 degrees Celsius and Sikar 5 degrees Celsius. Dense fog was witnessed in Sriganganagar and Pilani districts. At most places, maximum temperatures were recorded between 18.6 degrees Celsius and 27.3 degrees Celsius. The weatherman has predicted dense fog cover in northern areas of the state and cold wave conditions at a few places till tomorrow.

No respite from cold, fog in Haryana, Punjab

There was no let-up in the cold wave sweeping across Haryana and Punjab for the last few days, and heavy fog added to the woes of the people in the region. Amritsar in Punjab quivered at 3.3 degrees Celsius. Narnaul in Haryana braved the cold at 3.5 degrees Celsius, a MeT department official said here. Visibility dropped below 50 metres at many places, including Chandigarh, in the two states in the morning. 'Bomb cyclone' pounds eastern US, four reported dead
