Toria MSP at Rs 3900/qtl includes Rs 100 bonus this year: Govt

The government today clarified that the minimum support price (MSP) for toria, an oilseed similar to rapeseed, fixed at Rs 3,900 per quintal for the current year also includes bonus of Rs 100 per quintal. A corrigendum in this regard was issued by the Union Agriculture Ministry. The MSP has been fixed for the toria crop grown in the 2017-18 rabi season, which is underway, and to be harvested in 2018-19. Toria is cultivated in limited areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh. It is a short duration crop cultivated largely in Assam, Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal in the east mainly as winter crop. In Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttaranchal and western Uttar Pradesh, it is grown as a catch crop during September-December.

Cold wave conditions continue unabated in Himachal Pradesh

Intense cold wave conditions continued unabated today in Himachal Pradesh as high-altitude tribal and hill areas of the state received fresh snowfall. Bharmaur, Kothi and Mari received 3 cm of snowfall while Kalpa, Gondla and the upper Manali region received 2 cm of snow. Manali and its adjoining areas received light rains causing a marginal drop in the mercury, the MeT office said. Temperatures in high-altitude tribal areas were between minus 14 and minus 21 degrees Celsius while Keylong recorded a low of minus eight degrees Celsius. Kalpa recorded minus four degrees Celsius and Manali minus 2.6 degrees Celsius. Shimla and Una experienced their coldest night of the season with a low of 2.1 degrees Celsius and 2.2 degrees Celsius. Thick fog engulfed the mid and lower hills while thick ground frost occurred at many places affecting vehicular traffic in the morning. Water pipes froze and burst at many places affecting supply. Dense fog occurs at many places in Uttar Pradesh

Weather remained dry over Uttar Pradesh with dense to very dense fog occuring at many places, while shallow to moderate fog occurred at isolated places over the state. According to the Meteorological department, cold to severe cold conditions occurred at few places over the state. Yesterday, day temperatures fell in Moradabad and Meerut and were below normal in Varanasi, Lucknow, Allahbad, Kanpur and Jhansi. Night temperatures fell in Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Lucknow and Bareilly. The lowest minimum temperature in the state was 2.8 degrees Celsius recorded at Sultanpur and Fursatganj (Rae Bareli). Shallow to moderate fog is very likely at a few places over the state on January 6, January 7 and January 8.

Min temps increase in Rajasthan, Alwar coldest at 1.2 deg C

Minimum temperatures at most of the places in Rajasthan increased by 1 to 2 degree Celsius, while Alwar was the coldest in the state with a low of 1.2 degrees Celsius. According to the MeT office, Mount Abu recorded a minimum temperature of degrees Celsius, followed by Bhilwara 3.5 degrees Celsius, Sriganganagar 3.7 degrees Celsius, Pilani and Chittorgarh 4.6 degrees Celsius each, Dabok 4.8 degrees Celsius and Sikar 5 degrees Celsius. Dense fog was witnessed in Sriganganagar and Pilani districts. At most places, maximum temperatures were recorded between 18.6 degrees Celsius and 27.3 degrees Celsius. The weatherman has predicted dense fog cover in northern areas of the state and cold wave conditions at a few places till tomorrow.

No respite from cold, fog in Haryana, Punjab

There was no let-up in the cold wave sweeping across Haryana and Punjab for the last few days, and heavy fog added to the woes of the people in the region. Amritsar in Punjab quivered at 3.3 degrees Celsius. Narnaul in Haryana braved the cold at 3.5 degrees Celsius, a MeT department official said here. Visibility dropped below 50 metres at many places, including Chandigarh, in the two states in the morning. Day temperatures in the region have been hovering around 12-15 degrees Celsius over the last few days. Officials said fog delayed some trains passing through Punjab and Haryana. Flight operations were also hit. Hisar in Haryana shuddered at 4.8 degrees Celsius. Sirsa braved the cold at 6.5 degrees Celsius. 'Bomb cyclone' pounds eastern US, four reported dead

A giant winter "bomb cyclone" has walloped the US East Coast with heavy snow and freezing cold that made for treacherous travel conditions and bone-chilling misery. Four people were reported killed in the southeastern states of North and South Carolina, where icy roads sent vehicles skittering. Gulmarg, Pahalgam receive light snowfall

The twin resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam received light snowfall during the night, even as the minimum temperature marked an improvement at most places in Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region. Five die due to extreme cold in western UP

Four people have died due to intense cold wave conditions in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts, according to the administration. According to a report from the district headquarter, Kherati (70) died due to cold at Miranpur town. 40-year-old Kuldeep died due to hostile weather conditions at Jansath town. A 50-year-old labourer, Budh Singh Saini, died due to sweeping cold conditions at Biharighar village in the district last night. Papan (48) was found shuddering in cold near the Shamli railway station. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died. Muzaffarnagar recorded the lowest temperature in Uttar Pradesh on several days this week. The mercury in the district plunged to 3.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

Flight operations halt at JFK due to winter storm

A major American airline on Thursday cancelled its additional 200 flights as all the airline operations were suspended at the New York's John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports due to heavy snow and strong winds.The Delta Air Lines confirmed the same in a statement."Neither airport is expected to reopen until later this evening, pending the removal of snow and ice from runways, taxiways and ramp areas," the statement said."Delta has 200 mainline and Delta Connection cancellations on the books for Friday due to the inclement weather in the Northeast and New England. Flights at NY's Kennedy Airport suspended

All flights at New York's John F Kennedy Airport have been temporarily suspended due to strong winds whipping up white-out conditions as powerful winter storm hits the East Coast."Due to strong winds and whiteout conditions, flights at JFK have been temporarily suspended. Season's coldest day in Delhi; fog hits rail, air travel

Delhi experienced the coldest day of the season with temperatures dropping as low as 5 degrees Celsius, the Met Office said. The maximum temperature was recorded at 20.3 degrees Celsius, a notch above the normal, it said. Dense fog curtailed visibility to below 50 metres at 5.30 AM and improved slightly to 50 metres by 8.30 AM. The weather conditions led to disruption of flight and train services. 92 trains were running late, 44 were rescheduled and 19 cancelled, a railways official said. As many as 198 flights, including international, were delayed due to the fog at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, airport officials said. Another 11 flights, both flying into and out of the IGIA, were cancelled due to low visibility, they said. Kargil shivers at -20C; flight, train services hit in north

Kargil, in the cold desert of the Ladakh region, shivered at -20 degrees Celsius, making it one of the coldest places in northern India, as dense fog in Delhi delayed nearly 200 flights and forced cancellation of another 11. Mercury dips to season's lowest in many parts of West Bengal

Different parts of West Bengal today felt the chill as the mecury dipped to the season's lowest at a number of places in the state. Sriniketan recorded the day's lowest temperature at 7.2 degrees Celsius, the Met office said. Kolkatans brought out heavy woollens for the first time this season with the mercury dropping to 11.9 degrees Celsius. The Met Department has forecast night temperatures of around 11 degrees Celsius for the next five days in the metropolis, as northerly winds continue to sweep the plains of the state. Other places that recorded sub-10 degree temperatures were Asansol (8.2 degrees Celsius), Bankura (9.6 degrees Celsius), Burdwan (8.9 degrees Celsius) and Coochbehar (9.7 degrees Celsius). The weatherman has forecast fog or mist in some parts of the state during the morning and clear skies during the day.

Most parts of Himachal Pradesh shivered under biting cold wave as the mercury hovered around freezing point in several places. Lower hill areas like Bhuntar, Solan and Una experienced the coldest night of the season with mercury dipping to minus 0.4 degree, Solan 0.5 degree and 1.4 degrees Celsius. Muzaffarnagar in UP shivers at 3.4 deg C

Cold wave conditions continue unabated in Uttar Pradesh with several parts of the state recording a fall in day temperatures today. Muzaffarnagar recorded the lowest temperature at 3.4 degrees Celsius, a MeT official said. Dense to very dense fog occurred at isolated places in the northern state, he said. Day temperatures markedly fell in Bareilly, Gorakhpur and Moradabad divisions, the MeT said, adding that it was markedly below normal in Faizabad, Agra, Meerut divisions; appreciably below normal in Kanpur, and normal in Lucknow division.
