TN received six per cent higher rainfall in 2017

Tamil Nadu received six per cent higher annual rainfall in 2017, the Met office said today. However, during the North East monsoon, the state received nine per cent less. For the period covering January one to December 31, the recorded rainfall in Tamil Nadu was 97 cm while the normal level was 92 cm which was six per cent higher, Director, Regional Meteorological Centre, S Balachandran said. During the North East monsoon between October one to December 31, the state recorded 40 cm rain. However, the normal rainfall for this period was 44 cm which was nine per cent less than usual, he told reporters. In Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Nagapattinam districts the rainfall was 20 to 40 per cent higher than normal for this season. Tirunelveli alone experienced 42 per cent more rainfall than normal, he said. In 11 districts including Sivaganga and Erode, rainfall was 20 to 40 per cent less than normal. Cold winds sweep parts of UP; fog hampers vehicular, rail

Cold winds swept parts of Uttar Pradesh with Najibabad recording the lowest minimum temperature of 5.2 degrees Celsius as dense fog hampered vehicular and rail traffic in the state. Day temperatures fell in most parts of the state and Lucknow recorded maximum temperature of 15.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 10.3 degrees Celsius, an MeT official said. The state capital will very dense fog from midnight to forenoon and moderate to dense fog throughout the day, a report from the meteorological department said. Meerut recorded a low of 5.3 degree Celsius and is likely to witness fog for the next couple of days, it said.

Rajasthan reels under cold wave conditions

Rajasthan continued to reel under severe cold wave conditions with fog adversely affecting rail and road traffic. Due to dense fog, various trains in NWR region were running late whereas two flights were diverted to Jaipur. Jaipur International Airport Director J S Balhara said an Air India flight from Bangkok to Chandigarh and a Jet Airways flight from Pune to New Delhi landed at Jaipur after being diverted due to poor visibility in the early hours today. Mount Abu was recorded the coldest place in the state with mercury touching the freezing point followed by 2.4 degrees Celsius in Churu, 3.2 in Alwar and 3.4 in Sri Ganganagar, an official of the MeT department here said. Sikar recorded a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius, 4.3 in Pilani, 5.6 in Bhilwara, 6.3 in Chittorgarh, 6.6 in Eranpura and Bikaner, 7.0 in Dabok, 7.2 in Jaisalmer, 7.3 in Banasthali, 8.4 in Bundi, 8.5 in Jaipur, 8.7 in Swai Madhopur, 8.8 in Jodhpur, 9.4 in Ajmer, 10.2 in Kota and 10.4 degrees .

Classes suspended in Patna due to cold wave

Cold day condition is likely to prevail at many places in Bihar such as Patna, Gaya and Bhagalpur, and Patna district administration has suspended academic activities up to class VIII from tomorrow. Cold day condition is declared when the minimum temperature is 10 degree C or lower and the maximum temperature registers 4.5 to 6.4 degree below the normal maximum temperature, the Met office said. In view of the prevalent weather condition, Patna District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Agarwal suspended academic activities till Class VIII up to January 6. The DM has also ordered the school authorities to hold classes after 9:30 a m in all government and private schools when they reopen after January 6. Icy cold weather in mountains; fog slows down life in plains

The intense cold spell continued in the hilly states in north India even as air, road and rail travellers faced cancellations, suspended services and delays with heavy fog shrouding the plains today. The freeze continued to grip Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, which recorded minimum temperatures several degrees below the freezing point. Dense fog in Delhi

Delhiites today witnessed dense fog for the second consecutive day with minimum temperature settling at 5.7 degree Celcius. However, the maximum temperature recorded was 23.9 degrees Celcius with a humidity of 100 percentage and nil rainfall, a MeT official said. Yesterday, over 150 flights were delayed, nearly 50 diverted and an estimated 20 were cancelled as season's "worst" fog reduced visibility to 50 metres at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here. According to MeT department, the national capital will witness dense fog tomorrow too and it would become moderate the next day. Yesterday, the minimum temperature settled at 6.4 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal.

Dense fog, intense cold slow down life in Punjab, Haryana

Life moved at a snail's pace in Haryana and Punjab as visibility levels dipped drastically, touching the zero mark at many places due to heavy fog. Srinagar shivers under season's lowest temperature

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, ushered in the New Year under freezing conditions as the city recorded the coldest night of this winter with a minimum of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius. Srinagar city recorded the coldest night this season at minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, an official of the MET department said here. The earlier lowest this winter was minus 4.2 degrees Celsius recorded on 25 December. Bright sunshine improved the day temperature but it might lead to further fall in the night temperature, he said, adding the weather is expected to remain dry over the next 24 hours. Dense fog blankets Delhi, flights and trains delayed

The national capital was covered in a thick blanket of fog this morning while the minimum temperature settled at 6.4 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal for this time of the season. Humidity was recorded at 97 per cent while visibility stood at 400 metres, a MeT department official said, adding the maximum temperature was recorded at 23.9 degrees Celsius, four notches above the normal. In Delhi, more than 150 flights were delayed, around 50 diverted and 20 canceled as the season's "worst" fog reduced visibility to a meager 50 metres at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Strong icy winds swept across Shimla and surrounding areas, and the sky remained heavily overcast, raising hopes for a white New Year. Mercury plummets in most places of Rajasthan

The minimum temperature plummeted by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius at most places in Rajasthan due to north-westerly winds, a MeT official said. Fatehpur Shekhawati in Sikar district was coldest with a minimum temperature of 0.5 degrees Celsius followed by 3 degrees Celsius in Mount Abu. Sri Ganganagar recorded a minimum temperature of 3.1 degrees Celsius, 3.5 in Churu and Pilani, 4 in Sikar, 4.5 in Bhilwara, 5.2 in Alwar, 7.1 in Bikaner and Banasthali, 7.5 in Dabok, 8.8 in Swai Madhopur, 9.3 in Jaipur, 9.5 in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur and 9.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Kota and Ajmer, respectively, the official said. The maximum temperature at most places in Rajasthan was recorded between 20.4 and 27 degrees Celsius. The weather in the state is likely to remain dry with cold winds flowing in northern Rajasthan in next 24 hours, he added.

At -15.2 deg C, Leh coldest in JK

Leh experienced the coldest night of this winter with the minimum temperature there settling around 15 degrees Celsius below the freezing point, as the mercury continued its downward trend in Kashmir valley and Ladakh region. Leh town, in the frontier Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 15.2 degrees Celsius last night, against minus 13.8 degrees Celsius of the previous night, an official of the MeT department here said. Dry weather in UP, Lakhimpur Kheri coldest at 6.4 deg C

The weather in Uttar Pradesh remained mainly dry over the state, while dense to very dense fog occurred at many places, an official of the MeT department said. On Saturday, day temperatures fell appreciably in Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur, Jhansi and Agra, the official said. Similarly, night temperatures appreciably rose in Meerut. The lowest minimum temperature in the state was recorded in Lakhimpur Kheri at 6.4 degrees Celsius, he said. Biting cold sweeps Pb, Har; Adampur coldest at 2.3 deg C

Cold wave conditions today further intensified at many places in Punjab and Haryana, with Adampur reeling at a minimum temperature of 2.3 degrees Celsius. Adampur was the coldest place in Punjab while Hisar, which recorded a minimum temperature of 3.4 degrees Celsius, was the coldest place in Haryana, an official of MeT Department said here.
