Churu records lowest temp in Raj

Cold conditions prevailed in parts of Rajasthan where Churu remained the coldest, recording a minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. Sriganganagar recorded the night temperature of 5.4 degrees Celsius. Pilani, Dabok, Jodhpur and Bikaner recorded minimum of 6.1, 7.8, 8.6 and 8.7 mm respectively while the night temperatures in Ajmer, Jaisalmer, Jaipur and Barmer was 9.7, 9.8, 10.3 and 12.5 mm, according to the Meteorological Department here. The weather conditions would remain the same during the next 24 hours.

Thick blanket of haze envelops Delhi

A thick blanket of haze enveloped the city today with the mercury settling at 22.8 degrees Celsius, one notch above the season's average. Due to poor visibility, around 17 trains were cancelled while several others arrived late. According to a Northern Railway spokesperson, at 6 am, 17 trains stood cancelled, 26 were delayed and six others were rescheduled due to poor visibility. An official of the Meteorological department said that at 8.30 am, the visibility recorded was 400 metres at Safdarjung Observatory. The minimum temperature settled at 7 degrees Celsius, one notch below the season's average. The humidity oscillated between 96 and 54 per cent. The Met office has forecast clear skies for tomorrow with the possibility of shallow to moderate fog in the morning. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to settle at 23 and 8 degrees Celsius, respectively," the weatherman said. Cold wave intensifies in UP; Muzaffarnagar coldest at 4 deg C

Cold wave conditions intensified in Uttar Pradesh pushing down night temperatures across the state with Muzaffarnagar recording the lowest temperature of 4 degrees Celsius this morning. The Meteorological office said that the night temperatures fell in Varanasi, Allhabad, Kanpur, Lucknow and Meerut divisions. The day temperatures too dropped in Moradabad, Bareilly and the Gorakhpur divisions. Dense to very dense fog occurred at few places over the state, the weatherman said. The MeT office has forecast very dense fog at a few places in the state tomorrow.

Amritsar, Adampur coldest places in Punjab

Biting cold wave gripped Amritsar and Adampur in Punjab today as most of the places in the state and neighbouring Haryana continued to reel under intense chill. The minimum temperatures hovered below normal limit at most places in the two states, a Meteorological Department official said here. Amritsar and Adampur recorded identical minimum temperatures of 3.5 degrees Celsius. Cold weather conditions also prevailed in Bathinda, where the minimum settled at 4.9 degrees Celsius. Faridkot at a low of 5.6 degrees Celsius, Gurdaspur at 5 degrees Celsius and Halwara at 4.8 degrees Celsius also reeled under piercing cold. Pathankot recorded a low of 6.5 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana and Patiala registered minimum temperatures of 7.1 degrees Celsius and 7 degrees Celsius respectively. Sunny morning brings relief from cold in Jammu

A sunny morning brought relief to the people in Jammu today after another cold night due to continuous decline in the night temperature. The minimum temperature settled at 6.4 degrees Celsius two degrees below normal for this part of the season and a notch below previous night, a spokesman of the MET department said. After playing hide and seek over the past two days, a bright sun appeared this morning providing respite to the people from the biting cold. Despite cloud cover, the day temperature in the city registered an increase yesterday and settled at 19.4 degrees Celsius a notch below average during this part of the season. Cold wave conditions continue in most parts of HP

Intense cold wave conditions continued unabated in most parts of Himachal Pradesh even as minimum temperatures rose marginally in the state. Maximum temperatures dropped by a few notches with the sky remaining partially overcast. Strong icy winds swept the mid and higher hills, with Keylong shivering at 0.8 degrees Celsius during the day and recording a low of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius. The high-altitude tribal areas and mountain passes reeled under cold wave conditions with minimum temperature staying 12 to 18 degrees below normal. Clear but cold day in Capital on Christmas eve

Delhi'ites today witnessed a bright day with the minimum temperature plunging to 6.4 degrees Celsius, even as the city's air quality worsened on the eve of Christmas. The maximum temperature during the day was recorded at 25.1 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal, the weather department said. The minimum temperature was recorded at 6.3 degrees Celsius, two notches below season's average, while the humidity oscillated between 91 and 40 per cent, a MeT official said. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 305, classified as 'very poor', as against yesterday's 228. According to officials, shallow fog was witnessed in the morning and the visibility was 800 metres at 8.30 AM. However, the hourly graph of the Central Control Room for Air Quality Management captured the rising trend of ultrafine pollutants PM2.5 and PM10. After rising through the day, PM10 and PM 2.5 were recorded at 315 and 186 microgram per cubic metre (ug/m3) .

Kargil remains coldest in country, mercury dips to -3 deg C in

Kargil continued to be the coldest place in the country for the second consecutive day as the night temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir stayed several degrees below the freezing point, while a sub-zero temperature was recorded after a gap of three years in Tamil Nadu's Ooty. In Rajasthan, Mount Abu was the coldest place, recording a low of 1.4 degrees Celsius, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) report said. The minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 6.3 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average. The maximum temperature touched 25.1 degrees Celsius, with the national capital witnessing a bright day. Min temps in parts of Raj drop; Mount Abu coldest at 1.4 deg C

Minimum temperatures in most places of Rajasthan plummeted by 1 to 3 degrees compared to yesterday and Mount Abu was the coldest in the state recording a low of 1.4 degrees Celsius. Churu recorded a low of 4.4 degrees Celsius, followed by 4.5 degrees Celsius in Sikar, 5.6 degrees Celsius in Alwar, 6 degrees Celsius in Chittorgarh, 6.2 degrees Celsius in Sriganganagar, 6.5 degrees Celsius in Dabok, 6.8 degrees Celsius in Pilani and 7.3 degrees Celsius in Banasthalu. Maximum temperatures at most places remained in between 21.4 degrees Celsius and 30.4 degrees Celsius, an MeT department official said. The weatherman has predicted dry weather and no major change in temperatures till tomorrow.

Mercury dips to -3 degrees celsius at Sandinala

After a gap of about three years sub-zero temperature was recorded in this tourist town, with the mercury dipping to minus three degrees at Sandinala on the outskirts. Officials said the meter placed at Sandinala power station recorded minus three degrees. Fog engulfs Uttar Pradesh

Dense to very dense fog covered isolated places in Uttar Pradesh with Allahabad recording the highest maximum temperature at 25.6 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, day temperatures fell in Faizabad, while it was above normal in Allahabad, Agra and Meerut, the MeT office said. Night temperatures fell in Varanasi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra and Meerut, while they were above normal in Bareilly, and below normal in Allahabad. Muzaffarnagar recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 3.1 degrees Celsius. The MeT has forecast a dry weather in the state tomorrow.

Snowfall hampers efforts to restore Mughal Road

Intermittent snowfall is hampering efforts to restore Mughal road, which links the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region with south Kashmir's Shopian district, an official said. The road remained closed for the 15th day today. We have made several attempts to clear the road of snow and make it traffic worthy again but frequent snowfall is hampering efforts, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Traffic, Sheikh Mohammad Aslam told PTI. The Mughal road, an alternate link between Kashmir and rest of the country, was closed for traffic on December 10 evening as a precautionary measure owing to prediction of heavy snowfall. Adampur and Karnal were the coldest places in Punjab and Haryana where minimum temperature hovered below normal at most places today. Adampur saw a low of 4.3 degrees Celsius while Karnal braved the chill at a low of 4.6 deg C, a MeT Department official said here. Among other places, Amritsar experienced a cold night at 5.2 deg C while Ludhiana recorded a low of 5.8 deg C. Cold weather conditions also prevailed in Patiala, where the minimum settled at 6.7 deg C. Halwara, Bathinda and Faridkot braved the chill at 7.4 deg C, 7.4 deg C and 7 deg C respectively. Jammu wakes up to cold morning

The denizens of Jammu woke up to a cold morning as the mercury in the region fell to below normal owing to light snowfall in high altitude areas. The minimum temperature recorded in the city was 7.5 degrees Celsius one degree below normal during this part of the season, while the day temperature recorded yesterday was two degrees below average at 17.8 degrees Celsius, a spokesman of the MET office said. Katra, the base camp for the pilgrims visiting the famous Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Reasi district, also registered a dip in the night temperature which settled at 7.8 degrees Celsius against the previous night's 8.4 degrees Celsius. Kargil coldest in hills, Churu in plains

Kargil was the coldest place in the country today as harsh weather gripped Jammu and Kashmir amid a less-severe winter in other northern states, while cold wave conditions prevailed at places in Karnataka and rainfall occurred in some areas in Tamil Nadu. Cold conditions continue in Pb, Har; Adampur coldest at 2.4

Cold conditions continued to prevail in Punjab and Haryana even as minimum temperatures hovered few notches above normal in most parts of the two states. Fog and mist prevailed in several parts of Punjab and Haryana, official said. Adampur in Punjab's Jalandhar district was the coldest place as it shivered at 2.4 degree Celsius, an official of the MeT department said here. Lakhimpur Kheri coldest place in UP at 5.8 degrees Celsius

Lakhimpur Kheri, located along the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh, today recorded a minimum temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the state, even as moderate to dense fog occurred at isolated places. There was no significant change in night or day temperatures, the local MeT office said. The weather is expected to be dry tomorrow with shallow to moderate fog at certain places.
