Kargil remains coldest in country, mercury dips to -3 deg C in

Kargil continued to be the coldest place in the country for the second consecutive day as the night temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir stayed several degrees below the freezing point, while a sub-zero temperature was recorded after a gap of three years in Tamil Nadu's Ooty. In Rajasthan, Mount Abu was the coldest place, recording a low of 1.4 degrees Celsius, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) report said. The minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 6.3 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average. The maximum temperature touched 25.1 degrees Celsius, with the national capital witnessing a bright day. Jammu and Kashmir is currently under the grip of the "Chillai Kalan", the harshest 40-day period of winter. Min temps in parts of Raj drop; Mount Abu coldest at 1.4 deg C

Minimum temperatures in most places of Rajasthan plummeted by 1 to 3 degrees compared to yesterday and Mount Abu was the coldest in the state recording a low of 1.4 degrees Celsius. Churu recorded a low of 4.4 degrees Celsius, followed by 4.5 degrees Celsius in Sikar, 5.6 degrees Celsius in Alwar, 6 degrees Celsius in Chittorgarh, 6.2 degrees Celsius in Sriganganagar, 6.5 degrees Celsius in Dabok, 6.8 degrees Celsius in Pilani and 7.3 degrees Celsius in Banasthalu. Maximum temperatures at most places remained in between 21.4 degrees Celsius and 30.4 degrees Celsius, an MeT department official said. The weatherman has predicted dry weather and no major change in temperatures till tomorrow.

Mercury dips to -3 degrees celsius at Sandinala

After a gap of about three years sub-zero temperature was recorded in this tourist town, with the mercury dipping to minus three degrees at Sandinala on the outskirts. Officials said the meter placed at Sandinala power station recorded minus three degrees. The area recorded minus one degrees three years ago, they said The biting cold and heavy fog forced residents and tourists were forced to remain indoors till about 10.30 AM.

Fog engulfs Uttar Pradesh

Dense to very dense fog covered isolated places in Uttar Pradesh with Allahabad recording the highest maximum temperature at 25.6 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, day temperatures fell in Faizabad, while it was above normal in Allahabad, Agra and Meerut, the MeT office said. Night temperatures fell in Varanasi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra and Meerut, while they were above normal in Bareilly, and below normal in Allahabad. Muzaffarnagar recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 3.1 degrees Celsius. The MeT has forecast a dry weather in the state tomorrow.

Snowfall hampers efforts to restore Mughal Road

Intermittent snowfall is hampering efforts to restore Mughal road, which links the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region with south Kashmir's Shopian district, an official said. The road remained closed for the 15th day today. We have made several attempts to clear the road of snow and make it traffic worthy again but frequent snowfall is hampering efforts, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Traffic, Sheikh Mohammad Aslam told PTI. The Mughal road, an alternate link between Kashmir and rest of the country, was closed for traffic on December 10 evening as a precautionary measure owing to prediction of heavy snowfall. About four feet of snow accumulated on the ground at Peer Ki Gali along the road during the inclement weather between December 11 and 14. Adampur, Karnal coldest places in Punjab and Haryana

Adampur and Karnal were the coldest places in Punjab and Haryana where minimum temperature hovered below normal at most places today. Adampur saw a low of 4.3 degrees Celsius while Karnal braved the chill at a low of 4.6 deg C, a MeT Department official said here. Among other places, Amritsar experienced a cold night at 5.2 deg C while Ludhiana recorded a low of 5.8 deg C. Cold weather conditions also prevailed in Patiala, where the minimum settled at 6.7 deg C. Halwara, Bathinda and Faridkot braved the chill at 7.4 deg C, 7.4 deg C and 7 deg C respectively. Chandigarh, too, had a cold night at 7.4 deg C. In Haryana, after Karnal, Hisar was the coldest place at a low of 5 deg C. Rohtak saw a low of 5.4 deg C while Narnaul registered a low of 6.5 deg C. Ambala and Sirsa recorded respective minimum temperature of 8 deg C and 7 deg C. Jammu wakes up to cold morning

The denizens of Jammu woke up to a cold morning as the mercury in the region fell to below normal owing to light snowfall in high altitude areas. The minimum temperature recorded in the city was 7.5 degrees Celsius one degree below normal during this part of the season, while the day temperature recorded yesterday was two degrees below average at 17.8 degrees Celsius, a spokesman of the MET office said. Katra, the base camp for the pilgrims visiting the famous Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Reasi district, also registered a dip in the night temperature which settled at 7.8 degrees Celsius against the previous night's 8.4 degrees Celsius. Banihal, the highway town along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, recorded a low of 1.3 degrees, almost three notches below the previous night, the spokesman said. Officials said high altitude areas of Jammu region experienced light snowfall during the past 24 hours.

Cold, foggy Sunday morning in Delhi, 17 trains cancelled

Delhi wakes up to foggy day

The people in Delhi woke up to a foggy day on Sunday, while the temperature was considerably moderate as compared to other days.The Indian Meterological Department report said the minimum temperature to be 7 degrees Celsius and maximum temperature to be 25 degrees celsius in the national capital.At least 17 trains were cancelled, 19 arriving late and six rescheduled after a blanket of fog engulfed Delhi today.The Air Quality Index in major areas of the city continued to be in "very unhealthy" category.

Kargil coldest in hills, Churu in plains

Kargil was the coldest place in the country today as harsh weather gripped Jammu and Kashmir amid a less-severe winter in other northern states, while cold wave conditions prevailed at places in Karnataka and rainfall occurred in some areas in Tamil Nadu. The lowest minimum temperatureof4.1 degrees Celsius wasrecorded at Churu in Rajasthan in the plains of the country, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) report said. Cold conditions continue in Pb, Har; Adampur coldest at 2.4

Cold conditions continued to prevail in Punjab and Haryana even as minimum temperatures hovered few notches above normal in most parts of the two states. Fog and mist prevailed in several parts of Punjab and Haryana, official said. Adampur in Punjab's Jalandhar district was the coldest place as it shivered at 2.4 degree Celsius, an official of the MeT department said here. Among other places in Punjab, minimum temperatures in Bathinda, Halwara, Gurdaspur, Faridkot and Pathankot were 4.8 degrees Celsius, 6.4, 6.5, 5 and 6.7 degrees Celsius respectively. Amritsar braved cold weather at 5.1 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana and Patiala saw minimum settling at 8.7 and 9.2 degrees Celsius, up to three notches above normal, official said. Lakhimpur Kheri coldest place in UP at 5.8 degrees Celsius

Lakhimpur Kheri, located along the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh, today recorded a minimum temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the state, even as moderate to dense fog occurred at isolated places. There was no significant change in night or day temperatures, the local MeT office said. The weather is expected to be dry tomorrow with shallow to moderate fog at certain places.

Cold wave tightens grip in Kashmir, temp dips below zero deg C

After a few days of respite, cold wave tightened its grip in Kashmir as the night temperature across the valley and Ladakh region dipped by several degrees and settled below the freezing point at most places. Kargil was the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir with a low of minus 15.2 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg, the famous ski-resort in north Kashmir, was coldest in the valley at a low of minus 7 degrees Celsius. Cold wave conditions continue in Himachal Pradesh

Cold wave conditions aggravated in the high tribal areas and higher hills of Himachal Pradesh as the minimum temperatures dipped by few notches. Thick smog envelops Delhi

A thick smog enveloped the national capital today with the mercury settling at 25.3 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season's average. According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature was recorded at 11 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average. A MeT Department official said that the humidity oscillated between 94 and 36 per cent. The weatherman has forecast clear skies for tomorrow with the possibility of shallow to moderate fog in the morning. "The skies will remain clear tomorrow. Dense fog in parts of Uttar Pradesh

Dense fog occurred at isolated places over Uttar Pradesh where Hamirpur recorded the lowest temperature of 7.2 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological said today. The weather was dry over other parts of the state and there was no significant change in the night and day temperatures, it said. The MeT has forecast shallow to moderate fog at some places in the state tomorrow.

At 6.7 deg C, Bhilwara coldest in Rajasthan

Night temperatures hovered above normal in parts of Rajasthan where Bhilwara was recorded as the coldest place with minimum temperature of 6.7 degree Celsius, the meteorological department said today. Minimum temperatures were 1-3 degrees above normal last night, according to MeT department here. Churu and Chittorgarh recorded minimum temperature of 7.4 and 7.7 degree Celsius respectively, while the night temperatures at Pilani, Sriganganagar, Sikar, Alwar, Jaipur, Kota and Barmer was 8.4, 8.7, 10, 11, 11.5, 11.7 and 14.1 degree Celsius respectively. There was no cold wave anywhere and the weather conditions would remain the same during next 24 hours, the MeT department said.
