Educational institutions in Kullu to be shut Friday due to snowfall, hailstorm

After a fresh bout of snowfall, rain and hailstorm in Himachal Pradesh, the Kullu district administration has ordered to close all educational institutions on Friday, officials said. The decision has been taken to ensure safety of students, they said. All education institutions in Kullu district will remain closed on Friday as a number of roads have been closed due to snowfall in upper parts and rain in lower parts of the district, Kullu District Magistrate Yunus said in his order issued on Thursday. Yunus also advised the local people and the tourists not to venture in sensitive areas near snowbound hills and nullahs in view of prediction of more snowfall and rain in the coming days. The Shimla Met Centre has forecast more snowfall in high and mid hills and rain in low hills and plains of the state till February 27. UK experts to enhance reach of Radio Monsoon for Indian fishers

A team of UK experts are working on enhancing the reach of a radio service to help fishers in India's southern Malabar Coast make more accurate and accessible marine weather forecasts, which would help save many lives in the region. Radio Monsoon, an outcome of University of Sussex's Sustainability Research Programme, is hoping to graduate from a station operating on a shoestring budget to a fully-equipped studio this year. It is designed to ensure safer working conditions for the thousands of fishing families in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The university team, led by anthropologist professor Filippo Osella, involved geographer Dr Max Martin working with artisanal fishers in Thiruvananthapuram, to convert their small tech experiment into a weather knowledge co-production tool. Higher reaches of Kashmir reach fresh snowfall

The higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall, while the plains were lashed with rains overnight, the MET Office said on Thursday. An official of the MET Department said the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded 29 cms of snow, while Kupwara received 11 cms of fresh snowfall during the night. Snow was also recorded in some areas like Banihal and Jawahar Tunnel along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the official said. He said there are reports of fresh snowfall in few other areas in the higher reaches of the valley. The plain areas, including summer capital Srinagar, received intermittent rains during the night which continued till the morning on Thursday. The MET Office has said there is possibility of rain/ snow at widespread places in the state, with heavy falls at isolated places in Kashmir and heavy to very heavy falls /thunderstorms at isolated places in Jammu on Thursday. It forecast scattered rain/snow at isolated places across the state on Friday.

Snowfall in Manali, hailstorm in Shimla intensify cold conditions in HP

A fresh bout of snowfall in Manali, and hailstorm in Shimla and other parts have intensified cold wave conditions in Himachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Department said on Thursday. Manali in Kullu district received 11 cm of snowfall from 5.30 pm on Wednesday to 8.30 am on Thursday, the MeT office in Shimla said. Kinnaur's Kalpa got 14 cm of snow during the period, it added. Kinnaur's Pooh received 3 to 4 inches of snowfall on Wednesday night, a district official said. Several areas in mid and lower hills and plains witnessed hailstorm and thunderstorm, it added. The minimum temperature in Manali and Kufri was recorded at minus 1.4 and minus 0.6 degrees Celsius respectively. Tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 6.8 degrees Celsius, it said adding Kalpa had a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Shimla and Dalhousie was 4.2 and 1.4 degrees Celsius.

Shimla: Snowfall in Kufri, Chharabra disrupts normal life

Humidity rises as light rain hits Delhi

Light rains lashed the national capital on Wednesday, increasing humidity levels in the atmosphere, officials said. The maximum temperature was recorded at 21.2 degrees Celsius, four notches below the season's average, while the minimum temperature was at 14.5 degrees, three notches above the normal, said a Met department official. Humidity oscillated between 100 and 76 per cent. The Met office has forecast overcast skies along with the possibility of light rain and thundershowers for Thursday. "Strong surface wind is likely to prevail. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 23 and 14 degrees, respectively," the weatherman said. On Tuesday, the minimum temperature settled at 12 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature was 24.5 degrees Celsius.

Kufri, Manali shiver at sub-zero temp after snowfall in HP

Tourist destinations Kufri in Shimla district and Manali in Kullu district are shivering at sub-zero temperature after recent snowfall in Himachal Pradesh, the Meteorological department said Wednesday. The minimum temperature in Kufri and Manali was minus 1.6 degrees Celsius and minus 0.6 degree Celsius respectively, the local weather office said. While Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 9.8 degrees Celsius, it said, Kalpa in Kinnaur district recorded a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius. In the state capital Shimla and in Chamba's Dalhousie, the minimum temperature was recorded at 3.8 degrees Celsius and 0.8 degrees Celsius, respectively, it said. Delhi witnessed light rain on Wednesday morning, with the mercury settling at 14.5 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average. The weatherman said that there is possibility of more rains later in the day, adding hailstorm is also likely at isolated places in the city. According to the meteorological department, 1.6 mm rainfall was recorded at the Safdarjung observatory till 8.30 am. "The skies will remain cloudy. Yellow weather warning issued for heavy snowfall, rain in HP

The Meteorological department has issued fresh yellow weather warning for heavy snowfall in high, mid hills and rains in low hill, plains of Himachal Pradesh on February 20 and 21, an official said Tuesday. There will be high moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea over northwest India, specifically over the Western Himalayan Region (WHR) due to the western disturbance and this may cause heavy rain and snowfall in the state on Wednesday and Thursday, Met officials here said. The roads are likely to get blocked especially in Shimla, Chamba, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur districts because of moderate to heavy snowfall during the period, they said, adding that thunderstorm accompanied with hailstorm, lightning and gusty wind will also occur at isolated places over the lower parts of the state on these days. Light to moderate rain was seen at several places in Punjab and few parts of Haryana in the early hours of Tuesday, even as the minimum temperatures hovered in the normal range. According to the Meteorological department officials here, rain lashed Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Adampur, Pathankot, Bathinda, Faridkot, Gurdaspur, Halwara, Mohali and Jalandhar in Punjab.
