Delhiites experience pleasant Sunday
It was a pleasant Sunday in Delhi, with the maximum temperature touching 23.8 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature settled at 11.8 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average. The maximum temperature was two notches below season's average. The humidity oscillated between 84 per cent and 50 per cent with zero rainfall. The weatherman has predicted mist and shallow fog for Monday morning with generally cloudy sky towards the afternoon and very light rain/thunder shower towards the evening. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 22 degrees Celsius and the minimum is likely to settle around 11 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, the minimum temperature settled at 10.5 degrees Celsius while the maximum was recorded at 22.6 degrees Celsius.
Moderate rainfall likely in West Bengal over next 3 days
The Met department Sunday predicted moderate rainfall in West Bengal over the next three days owing to formation of a western disturbance over Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Rainfall is likely to occur over most places of South and North Bengal during the period, the Met department said. Thunderstorm with gusty wind and lightning is also expected in districts of Bankura, Birbhum, Purulia, Jhargram, East and West Burdwan and West Midnapore from Sunday evening. The weatherman warned of squally wind, speed exceeding 40 km per hour, with lightning and hailstorm in North Bengal on Wednesday. It advised fishermen not to venture into deep sea along and off West Bengal and Odisha coasts on February 26 and 27.

Scientists have mapped the soil moisture and temperature variations in India over five decades using satellite data, creating a resource that may be a critical for improving predictions of how violent storms will affect any area. Thunderstorms embedded within Indian monsoon systems can deluge areas with dozens of inches of rain in little time, causing severe flooding and the loss of hundreds of lives each year. Better predictions of when, where and how much rain will fall is key to saving property and lives, researchers said in a statement. The team, including those from Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar and National Institute of Technology Rourkela, in collaboration with the Ministry of Earth Sciences developed multi-decade soil moisture and soil temperature fields using variety of surface and satellite data. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 23 degrees Celsius, a meteorological department official said. Humidity in the morning was recorded at 77 per cent. Met issues 'yellow' weather warning for hailstorm in HP
The Meteorological Department Friday issued a 'yellow' weather warning for hailstorm in the mid and low hills of Himachal Pradesh on February 26, officials said. A fresh western disturbance (WD) is very likely to affect western Himalayan region from February 24 evening, the MeT Centre Shimla said. Another WD, along with its induced cyclonic circulation, is very likely to affect northwest India from February 26, it added. Educational institutions in Kullu to be shut Friday due to snowfall, hailstorm
After a fresh bout of snowfall, rain and hailstorm in Himachal Pradesh, the Kullu district administration has ordered to close all educational institutions on Friday, officials said. The decision has been taken to ensure safety of students, they said. All education institutions in Kullu district will remain closed on Friday as a number of roads have been closed due to snowfall in upper parts and rain in lower parts of the district, Kullu District Magistrate Yunus said in his order issued on Thursday. Yunus also advised the local people and the tourists not to venture in sensitive areas near snowbound hills and nullahs in view of prediction of more snowfall and rain in the coming days. UK experts to enhance reach of Radio Monsoon for Indian fishers
A team of UK experts are working on enhancing the reach of a radio service to help fishers in India's southern Malabar Coast make more accurate and accessible marine weather forecasts, which would help save many lives in the region. Radio Monsoon, an outcome of University of Sussex's Sustainability Research Programme, is hoping to graduate from a station operating on a shoestring budget to a fully-equipped studio this year. It is designed to ensure safer working conditions for the thousands of fishing families in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The university team, led by anthropologist professor Filippo Osella, involved geographer Dr Max Martin working with artisanal fishers in Thiruvananthapuram, to convert their small tech experiment into a weather knowledge co-production tool. Higher reaches of Kashmir reach fresh snowfall
The higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall, while the plains were lashed with rains overnight, the MET Office said on Thursday. An official of the MET Department said the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded 29 cms of snow, while Kupwara received 11 cms of fresh snowfall during the night. Snow was also recorded in some areas like Banihal and Jawahar Tunnel along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the official said. He said there are reports of fresh snowfall in few other areas in the higher reaches of the valley. The plain areas, including summer capital Srinagar, received intermittent rains during the night which continued till the morning on Thursday. The MET Office has said there is possibility of rain/ snow at widespread places in the state, with heavy falls at isolated places in Kashmir and heavy to very heavy falls /thunderstorms at isolated places in Jammu on Thursday.
