COVID-19: 21-Day lockdown by PM Modi crucial to fight against pandemic, Says European think-tank

New Delhi/Noida, Mar 31(ANI): European think-tank lauded India's action against COVID-19 outbreak. European Foundation for South Asian Studies (EFSAS) said 21-day lockdown was not easy but was a crucial step. It added that Indian government was wise to take quick actions to stop the spread. PM Modi's initiative in calling for and organizing a video conference of SAARC leaders was also welcomed. EFSAS criticised Pakistan for politicising the event. There were 164,278 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States, 101,739 in Italy 81,518 in China. However, India had reported 1,251positive cases. EFSAS believes proactive measures taken by India helps control the spread of the deadly virus

Sweet shops to remain open for 4 hours every day amid national lockdown

Kolkata, Mar 31(ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee's announcement to give 4 hours relaxation every day to sweet shops as brought relief to dairy farm, sweet lovers and other small industries in Bengal. The sweet shops maintained social distancing and proper guidelines while attending the customers that walked in the store. A shopkeeper said that though most of our staff has gone home and due to lockdown cannot come back, but still over night we have made few sweets which are helpful for the protein intake of any individual.

Bengaluru man shares experience of recovering from COVID-19

Bengaluru, Mar 31 (ANI): A man from Bengaluru, Venkata Raghava who was infected with COVID-19 has fully recovered now. Speaking to ANI, Raghava told about his infection and how he dealt with it. He said, "I am doing perfectly well now. I had travelled to Los Angeles via Heathrow airport, which is when I came in contact with many travellers. I might have picked up the infection there."He further added, "When I landed back in Bengaluru on March 8, I had fever, I isolated myself. Same day I went to a hospital where my travel history was taken and I was tested positive for COVID-19. Next day, I was admitted to the isolation centre. My entire family was tested negative." "COVID-19 is like regular viral fever, nothing to be scared of. At the isolation centre one has to take care of themselves, unlike at hospital where doctors and nurses take care of the patient", said Venkara Raghava.

State's first COVID-19 patient is fully cured: Punjab Health Minister

Chandigarh, Mar 31(ANI): Punjab Health Minister BS Sidhu, on total number of cases in Punjab, said that coronavirus cases in the state are 41 including 3 deaths so far. "State's first COVID-19 patient has now been fully recovered," added the health minister. BS Sidhu further added that more than the people in quarantine, people out in the market who are unaware that they are infected are in danger. He said, "We are tracing and testing all connections of all the positive patients in quarantine."

New Delhi, Mar 24 (ANI): Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury helped in preparing food in the national capital on March 31 amid coronavirus lockdown. BHU claims to discover new technology to test coronavirus

Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Mar 31 (ANI): Banaras Hindu University's Department of Molecular and Human Genetics claimed it has discovered a new technology to test coronavirus to give accurate results in 5-6 hours. While speaking to ANI, the Associate Professor of Dept of Molecular and Human Genetics, Dr Geeta Rai said, "We have tried to target a protein sequence present only in COVID-19 and not present in any other viral strain. We are hopeful when testing is done it will only detect COVID-19 presence, so there will be less chance of false detection." "This has been developed by an all women team of Dolly Das, Khushbupriya, Hiral Thakar and me. We filed a patent on March 27. It will be successful only when it is validated by National Institute of Virology (NIV) after which it has to be approved by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)," she added.

Equity indices in the green, Vedanta gains by 7.5 pc

New Delhi, Mar 31 (ANI): Equity benchmark indices traded higher during early hours on March 31 tracking gains in global markets and a sizeable improvement in Chinese manufacturing data for March. At 10:15 am, the BSE SandP Sensex was up by 462 points or 1.62 per cent to 28, 902 while the Nifty 50 edged by 147 points or 1.77 per cent to 8, 428. All sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the positive zone with Nifty metal up by 4.1 %, financial service by 2.6%, IT by 2.3% and realty by 1.4%. Among stocks, metal major witnessed substantial gains with Vedanta moving up by 7.5% to Rs 66.20 per share. Hindalco ticked up by 7.5%, JSW Steel by 6.6% and Tata Steel by 5.6%.

Don't hold mass religious processions to win war against coronavirus: AIIMS doctor on Nizamuddin gathering

New Delhi, Mar 31 (ANI): The General Secretary of New Delhi All India Institute Of Medical Sciences's RDA, Rajeev Ranjan said that people must comply by the advisory of Government and avoid religious congregation for some time. Ranjan said, "Government has already asked you not to venture outside, but this religious congregation took place. India is a population mixed of culture and ethnicities, and lot of religion. We have to drop all these religious congregations, for these few months." He further added, "It's an appeal to citizens of India having any faith of religion whether they're Muslims, Christians or Hindus. It's an appeal to people from across the religion, to abide by the lockdown. And don't go for mass religious processions like this, so that we could win from coronavirus."

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan holds meeting amid COVID-19 outbreak

New Delhi, Mar 31 (ANI): Group of Ministers held meeting in the national capital on March 31 amid coronavirus outbreak in the country. COVID-19: Doctors disappointed with allotment of poor quality medical equipments in WB's Siliguri

Siliguri (West Bengal), Mar 31 (ANI): The doctors in North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) are disappointed and not satisfied with the allotment of plastic raincoats instead of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while treating COVID-19 patients. The authority is not supplying face masks, hand gloves and other equipments to doctors. While speaking to ANI, one of the doctors said, "The authority is not able to supply face masks, hand gloves and other equipments. Health workers are not getting anything which is a major concern. If the health workers get infected, then what will be the scenario of health system?" Medical personnel conduct casual check-ups for migrant labourers returning from neighbouring states

Chhatarpur (Madhya Pradesh), Mar 31 (ANI): Several migrant labourers reached Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur from different parts of country. These migrants include women and children as well. Medical team is employed at entry points to scan their health. Medical personnel were seen using thermal scanner from a wide gap. Nationwide lockdown: Transgender distribute food packets to needy in Surat

Surat (Gujarat), Mar 31 (ANI): Transgender distributed food packets to needy persons amid lockdown over COVID-19 outbreak on March 31. Around 150 transgender in Gujarat's Surat distributed food packets which include-rice, pulses, sugar and tea to the needy ones. They made 1500 kits (food packets) and distributed it in slum areas. While speaking to ANI, a member of the group, Nisha said, "We had started with 200 kits but now it has gone up to around 1500. We prepare it ourselves for distribution. We used to get together for celebration of navratri, but it got cancelled this year due to COVID-19. So, we thought of doing this instead." Migrant workers self-isolate outside village post return from Kerala

Facebook pledges USD 100 million to support news industry

New Delhi, Mar 31 (ANI): Facebook announced that it will provide more financial support for the news industry working during the COVID-19 pandemic. The investment fund includes USD 25 million in emergency grant funding for local news through the Facebook Journalism Project and USD 75 million in additional marketing spend, the official blog notes. The first round of the grants went to 50 local newsrooms in the US and Canada. Publishers used the grant to support coverage through covering travel costs, remote work capabilities and hiring freelance reporters. Facebook is working on providing support to publishers most in need in the hardest-hit countries.
