'The Trap' in Kochi spreading awareness against single-use plastic

Kochi (Kerala), Dec 31 (ANI): 'The Trap', a larger than life installation has been visualised and designed by KK Ajithkumar with coordination of Biju Thomas to draw public attention towards the big problem of plastic menace. This awareness campaign focuses mainly on the problems created by the single use and throw plastic bottles. Step into this massive bottle, which is 25-foot-tall and 6 feet in diameter to experience how it feels to be trapped from all sides by plastic waste. Each bottle that forms the building block of this installation has been collected as waste from various locations.

Refugees from Pakistan get Indian citizenship in Rajasthan's Kota

Kota (Rajasthan), Dec 31 (ANI): Eight Pakistani refugees were granted Indian citizenship by Rajasthan government. These refugees had come to India from Sindh province of Pakistan. They have been living in Kota since the year 2000. All the refugees received Citizenship document by District Collector Om Kasera.

Priyanka should remove 'Gandhi' from her name: Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti

New Delhi, Dec 31 (ANI): Responding to Priyanka Gandhi's 'saffron' remark on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, BJP leader Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said that Priyanka needs to understand what 'Bhagwa' is. She said, "She first needs to understand what a 'bhagwa' is. It is condemnable when people make such statements about 'bhagwa'. I want to ask Priyanka if she has any association with those who burnt buses." Further attacking Congress leader, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said, "Priyanka is not Gandhi. She should remove Gandhi from her name. There is a huge difference in the belief of Mahatma Gandhi and her. She should write Feroz Priyanka instead." While expressing concern of Yogi Adityanath's 'revenge' remark, Priyanka Gandhi on December 30 said that CM Yogi wears saffron but it is not his personal colour.

People resort to tea, bonfires amid cold spell

34 trains delayed due to low visibility in Northern Railway region

Equities on low swing in the absence of fresh triggers, Tech Mahindra falls by 1.7 pc

New Delhi, Dec 31 (ANI): Equity benchmark indices were subdued during early hours on Tuesday, the last trading session of 2019, with experts saying the market is likely to remain range-bound in the absence of any major triggers. At 10:15 am, the BSE S and P Sensex was down by 137 points to 41,421 while the Nifty 50 edged lower by 38 points at 12,218. Sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were mixed with Nifty IT down by 0.6 per cent, private bank by 0.5 per cent and auto by 0.4 per cent. Nifty realty ticked up by 0.25 per cent. Among stocks, Tech Mahindra fell by 1.76 per cent to Rs 768.95 per share while Wipro slipped by 0.78 per cent. Eicher Motors was down by 0.9 per cent and Hero MotoCorp by 0.8 per cent. The others which lost were IndusInd Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC. Those which showed marginal gains were Bharti Infratel, Coal India, Dr Reddy's, Hindustan Lever and Britannia. Wasteland turned into medicinal plant garden in Shivamogga

Shivamogga (Karnataka), Dec 31 (ANI): A piece of 12 acre wasteland was converted into a medicinal plant garden in Shivamogga. The task was undertaken by State Forest Department and Western Ghats Task force. The work started 10 years back. Chairman of State Biodiversity Board, AH Ashisara, said, "We collected rare endangered species from Western Ghats and planted here. It's a natural oxygen centre."

Suffering from cerebral palsy, Pune youth set to become judge

Pune (Maharashtra), Dec 31 (ANI): A 31-year-old from Pune who suffers from cerebral palsy, surmounted all odds and is now set to take charge as the Civil judge of junior division in February next year. Nikhil Prasad Baji, who is a patient of Cerebral Palsy from birth, passed out judicial magistrate first class and civil judge junior division exam in December this year. Speaking to ANI Nikhil said, "Throughout my journey I have experienced one thing that hard work always pays off. You should work hard. You should never consider yourself as someone different. Though you're special, don't consider yourself special."

Kerala CM Vijayan moves resolution against CAA in state assembly

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Dec 31 (ANI): Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan moved resolution against Citizenship (Amendment) Act in state Assembly, demanding withdrawal of CAA. Nepal hosts an odd beauty pageant of elephants

Sauraha (Nepal), Dec 31 (ANI): Scribbles over bodies, eyeliners, nail polish on nails and tippy-toes walk; this is beauty pageant of earth's biggest mammal, the elephants. The annual festival held in the tourist destination of south-west Nepal, Sauraha this year hosted the 16th edition of Elephant Festival amongst which the elephants' beauty contest was the centre of attraction. A total of five elephants participated in the annual contest which had brought in a large number of people at the tourist hub from around the country. A jury of three marked elephants based on the cleanliness of nails, body and walking style, discipline, scribbles, and for carrying out the orders given on by the mahouts. The mahouts affectionately prepare the elephants for the show which requires a long performing a long series of procedure and preparedness. The winner of the show got a treat of delicious food items as sugarcane, banana, papaya and other varieties whereas the owner of the elephant was awarded

General Bipin Rawat receives farewell Guard of Honour as Army Chief

New Delhi, Dec 31 (ANI): General Bipin Rawat received his farewell Guard of Honour as the Army Chief at South Block on Dec 31. He was appointed as India's first Chief of Defence Staff on Dec 30. BSF jawans high on 'josh' in freezing temperature along international border

Attari-Wagah Border, Dec 31 (ANI): Several areas along the International Border (IB) continue to witness shivering cold, which makes it difficult even for Border Security Force (BSF) and Army jawans posted in some of the regions. However, with the duty first attitude, BSF jawans are always on alert. "Be it summer, winter or rainy seasons any of these weather conditions doesn't matter for us. Our troops are 24*7 alert and maintained our domination. However, we are on extra alert because of the fog," said BSF Sub Inspector Nitika Malik.

Panchkula Administration offering mouse, earphones in exchange of e-waste

Panchkula (Haryana), Dec 31 (ANI): Panchkula Municipal Corporation came up with a unique idea to get rid of e-waste. The administration has decided to offer usable things such as mouse and earphones in exchange of e-waste. The decision has been taken to support 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' and to make Panchkula, e-waste free. The initiative has garnered massive support from the locals. Speaking on the initiative, Panchkula Municipal Corporation's Executive Commissioner Jarnail Singh said, "We have opened two collection centers to collect e-waste and whoever will deposit the e-waste material will get usable things such as mouse and earphones. Locals are giving positive response to the initiative. The agency is disposing it in a scientific way."

I was pleased to represent India: Aayushi on winning Miss Teen International

Vadodara (Gujarat), Dec 31 (ANI): Vadodara's Aayushi Dholakia who won Miss Teen International, said that she was pleased to represent India and become the first Asian to win the teen pageant in 27 years. "I was very pleased that I could represent my country and win Miss Teen International crown for my country," said Aayushi, on winning the pageant for India in which contestants from 22 countries took part from 13-19 December in New Delhi. Aayushi, first had to beat 31 contestants from across India to enter the international leg of the competition. "When I entered the competition and gave my audition. I was very raw. I only knew that I had to walk. When I got to the national pageant I thought of getting some training for walk, Q and A and body language and so I did," she added.

Obesity can affect children's working memory

New Delhi, Dec 31 (ANI): Obese children have lower working memory in comparison to children with normal weight, a new study has demonstrated. The study published in JAMA Pediatrics and performed at the University of Vermont and Yale University found that obese children had a thinner prefrontal cortex than normal-weight children. The thinner cortex could be a factor in the decreased executive function earlier studies observed among children with higher BMI. The study analysed results from 3,190 nine- and 10-year-olds recruited at 21 ABCD sites in 2017.

Will review existing FTAs to protect interest of domestic industry: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi, Dec 31 (ANI): Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, on Monday (December 30) said that India had decided not to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in interest of domestic industries and farmers, and assured that the government will review existing Free Trade Agreements with different countries to protect the interest of domestic industry and traders. "We decided not to join Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in interest of domestic industries and farmers. I assure you that we'll review all existing Free Trade Agreements with different countries to protect interest of industry and traders," Goyal said.
