Chennai comes to a halt after Jayalalithaa sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment

Chennai, Sep 28 (ANI): Chennai woke up to a silent morning on Sunday after a Bangalore special court held Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa guilty in the disproportionate assets case. Jayalalithaa is sentenced to 4 years of jail for obtaining assets worth almost Rs. 66 crores through dishonest means during her first tenure as chief minister from 1991 to 1996. Saturday, the day of the sentence, left Chennai bruised, battered and licking the wounds caused by nearly half a day of violence and picketing. A tight security is at place outside DMK Chief M Karunanidhi's residence in Chennai, a day after AIADMK supporters burnt his effigies in protest. All business establishments and offices are shut and city's transportation also came to a halt. Jayalalithaa has been disqualified from public office for at least 6 years which, combined with the jail sentence, means that she cannot contest polls for 10 years. War of words between Modi supporters and Kashmiri separatist representatives

New York, Sep 28 (ANI): Supporters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and representatives of some Kashmiri separatist groups exchanged war of words outside the United Nations headquarters in New York. As Modi arrived for his first address to the UN General Assembly, a large number of Indian-Americans gathered outside the UN headquarters to welcome him. In the mean time supporters of Kashmiri separatists group took jibe, shouting some anti-India slogans.

Pakistan arrests 29 Indian fishermen for trespassing its waters

Karachi, Sep 28 (ANI): Pakistan maritime authorities arrested twenty nine Indian fishermen and took into custody their five boats for illegal fishing in the country's territorial waters, according to a police official. The arrested fishermen were handed over to police in the port city of Karachi for necessary legal action. According to maritime security agency, the fishermen were almost 10 kilometres inside Pakistan territorial waters when they were detained. In May Pakistan had freed 151 Indian fishermen ahead of Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's visit to India to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony.

PM Modi shares stage with Hugh Jackman, addresses youth at Global Citizen Festival 2014

New York, Sep 28 (ANI): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared stage with Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman while participating in Global Citizen Festival 2014 at Central Park in New York. Modi addressed the youth present at the event and said that there is a current of hope in the crowd where there is a hope for future of humanity. He said that a little sacrifice today can add to a better tomorrow. The Indian PM said that it is an admirable act that through this festival, people are touching lives of those who are as fortunate as others. Further, he also said that world changes with power and attitude of youth and not by wisdom of old. Permanent Indian representative in UN on Modi's UNGA address

New York, Sep 28 (ANI): Permanent representative of India in the United Nations, Asoke Kumar Mukerji said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address in the United Nations General Assembly was a broad ranging speech which gave importance to development and need for understanding. Bangladeshi expatriates stage protest against Sheikh Hasina in US

New York, Sep 28 (ANI): Bangladeshi expatriates held a protest against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the United States. Hasina was in New York to attend the 69th edition of United Nations General Assembly. The protesters blamed Hasina for killing thousands of the countrymen. Several supporters of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were also present during the demonstration. A protester, Giash Ahmed alleged misrule by Hasina in Bangladesh and protested at the ruling Awami League government's corruption in the country and the waste of money during the prime minister's visit to the US as she took an entourage of 180 members for attending a meeting. On Friday, Hasina participated in the high-level meeting on United Nations peacekeeping on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly that was chaired by US Vice President Joe Biden.

Sikh delegation members have high hopes from PM Modi

New York, Sep 28 (ANI): The members of Sikh delegation in New York said that they have high hopes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of their meeting with the PM. One of the members Surinder Singh said that they want Modi to solve the issue of Sikh riots in 1984 where many innocent people lost their lives. Another member Jasdeep Singh said that they expect Modi to solve problems of visa being faced by those who came and settled in the country in early 80s. Indian experts condemn Pak PM after he raises Kashmir issue at UNGA

New York /New Delhi, Sept 27 (ANI): Indian experts condemned Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as he raked up Kashmir issue at the UN General Assembly. Sharif on Friday raised the Kashmir issue at the UN General Assembly and blamed India for "another missed opportunity" to address outstanding issues by cancelling the foreign secretary-level talks. India's Foreign Policy expert Kamal Aga termed the move as unfortunate to raise sensitive issue in front of international community. Security Expert, Uday Bhaskar said that it should not come as surprise after India cancelled the foreign secretary level talks. He added that Pakistan was looking for an opportunity and the UNGA is an appropriate platform to raise the issue. Another security expert, Alok Bansal, said that Sharif could not have survived if he had not raised the questions especially at a time when he has been going through a tricky situation within the country.

New York, Sept 27 (ANI): India said that it will use its right to reply and set the records straight on the floor of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) over the Kashmir issue raised by Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. PM Modi and New York mayor discussed megacity policing: MEA

New York, Sep 27 (ANI): India's foreign ministry said on Saturday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed issues of anti-terror squads and megacity policing with New York Mayor Bill De Blasio during his one to one talks. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Syed Akbaruddin, said both mayor Blasio and the director of US National Cancer Institute, Harold Varmus, hailed Modi's recent decision of increasing the minimum age of smoking from 18 to 25 in the country. The foreign ministry spokesperson said Modi will speak in Hindi during his speech at United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Saturday and will take on militancy. India will handle issue procedurally: MEA on US summons against PM Modi

New York, Sep 27 (ANI): India has reacted cautiously to the summons issued against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots and said that it will handle the issue procedurally. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said that India's sovereign representative is ring-fenced and that there is no question of anyone serving summons on India's sovereign representative. The MEA had earlier expressed its disappointment over the summons issued against Prime Minister Modi and termed the allegations to be baseless.

Politicos criticize Pak PM Sharif for raising Kashmir issue at UNGA

New Delhi, Sept 27 (ANI): Cutting across party lines, leaders of various political parties criticized Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for raising the issue of Jammu and Kashmir at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and said that all issues between the two Asian neighbours have to be addressed bilaterally. BJP leader Nalin Kohli said it reflected that Pakistan was not at all serious as far as resolving the issue of Jammu and Kashmir was concerned. Congress leader echoing similar sentiments said that Pakistan raised this issue to divert the attention from its internal disasters. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Tariq Anwar on his part said that it is an old tactic of Pakistan. PM Modi meets Mayor of New York City

New York, Sept 27 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio on the first day of his visit to the United States.
