Samsung Mobile eyes 20% market share in India
Stuti Roy/PTI / Singapore Jun 16, 2009, 16:47 IST

Electronics major Samsung today said it expects to increase its market share to about 20 per cent this year in the Indian handset market as it introduces a slew of new products over the next two months.

The company, which currently has a market share of about 15 per cent in India, plans to increase its share by about 5-6 per cent this year.

"We are looking at increasing our market share by 5-6 per cent this year.... Our current share is about 10-15 per cent," Samsung India Country Head Sunil Dutt told reporters.

Over the next two months, Samsung will launch about seven new handsets in various categories.

Expanding its Omnia series, Samsung will launch Omnia HD, priced at Rs 36,000 in July along with Omnia Pro series comprising 7610 (priced at Rs 27,000) and 7320 (priced at Rs 17,500).

The company will launch its water-resistant and shock-proof handset B2100 in the Indian market, Dutt said. He, however, declined to comment on the price of the product.

Samsung also plans to launch its Android-powered handset 'Galaxy', which is expected to be introduced during July-August this year. The handset has a 3.2-inch AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screen, GPS, a five-megapixel (MP) camera, scratch-resistant touchscreen.Like other Android handsets, Galaxy would allow users to access the Android Market and a host of Google services, including Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube.

The company also plans to introduce Pixon 12, a camera with a 12-MP camera, priced at Rs 34,000 in July this year, Dutt said.

Yesterday, the company has launched its latest handset, Jet, which will be shipped to India by the end of this month.
