Who is C K Birla?
Chandra Kant Birla (C K Birla) is an Indian businessman and philanthropist. He is the chairman of multinational conglomerate CK Birla Group and a member of the illustrious Birla family that has made its mark on India’s industrial history.

C K Birla’s eponymous conglomerate operates across three industry groups—technology and automotive, home and building solutions, healthcare and education. As of 2021, the group has 25,000 employees on its payroll, runs 41 manufacturing facilities and has a presence across five continents. In the same year, the group recorded revenue of $2.4 billion. The group includes well-known brands such as Orient Electric, Orient Cement, and Birla Institute of Technology - Mesra located in Jharkhand’s Ranchi.
In 2017, group firm Hindustan Motors sold its iconic car brand Ambassador to French carmaker Peugeot SA for Rs 80 crore ($12 million).
CK Birla’s career
In addition to the chairmanship of the Group, CK Birla is the chairman of several firms in the group. He chairs auto parts maker AVTEC, building materials maker HIL Ltd, NBC Bearings, metal maker Neosym, Orient Cement, and Orient Paper & Industries.

Birla also serves as a member of the Commonwealth Business Council, chairman of the board of governors of the Birla Institute of Technology, chairman of the board of governors of the Indian Institute of Management Udaipur, and member of the board of governors of The Calcutta Medical Research Institute.
Under Birla’s leadership, the Group has taken part in various philanthropic activities. The Group allocates resources in areas such as science and technology, art and culture, and heritage preservation. The Group also works to improve the livelihoods of people in rural and underprivileged communities.
Personal life
C K Birla was educated at La Martiniere for Boys, Calcutta and Calcutta University. He is the son of industrialist Ganga Prasad Birla who founded HIL and many academic organisations including the Birla Institute of Technology.
