Bhilai Steel Plant records higher production

BS Reporter Kolkata/ Raipur

Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), the flagship entity of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has recorded higher production, in fiscal 2010-11.

A statement issued by the company, here, said that BSP has finished the financial year 2010-11 with record production of 5.71 million tonnes (MT) of hot metal, 5.33 MT crude steel and 4.57 MT of saleable steel.

Best ever loading of 4.53 MT saleable steel has also been recorded by SAIL's flagship plant in 2010-11.

The previous best figures are 5.39 MT of hot metal, 5.18 MT crude steel, 4.49 MT saleable steel and 4.43 MT of saleable steel loading, all recorded in fiscal 2008-09.

As compared to the performance in previous financial year 2009-10, the plant has registered growth of 6.3 per cent, 4.3 per cent, 6.7 per cent and 4.3 per cent in hot metal, crude steel, finished steel and saleable steel production.

A record high of 16.33 MT of total raw material has been handled by the plant's ore handling plant during the year.

With stocks at existing captive iron ore mines in Dalli-Rajhara fast depleting, revamping of some facilities and other measures were taken up on priority at Bhilai's iron ore complex during the year to meet the requirement of ore, the company statement said.

The overall higher levels of production in 2010-11 has been facilitated by the plant's mines department that has registered 7.7 MT iron ore production during the year, an increase of 4.2% over that in last fiscal year 2009-10.

A significant achievement about BSP's performance in 2010-11 was the increase in proportion of value-added special steel production in total saleable steel production. As compared to 62 per cent in previous fiscal year, the share of value-added special steel production, which includes rails, plates, TMT products and EQ wire rods, rose to 64.5 per cent in 2010-11.

The rail and structural mill that completed 50 years of production in October, 2010, had recorded the best-ever loading of 2,32,555 T of UTS-90, 26-M long rails, surpassing the previous best of 2,31,470 T in 2009-10.

The mill that fulfilled its commitment to Indian Railways for supply of corrosion resistant grade of NCC rails had also exported over 9,660 T of rails to Sri Lanka during the year.
