Lanco Infratech and GMR Group, two major private power producers, have sought clarity from the government on natural gas supplies to the new plants from Reliance Industries’ D-6 block in Krishna-Godavari basin.

Both the companies are gearing up to commission their gas-based power plants, having a combined capacity of over 1,500 Mw, by December.

The demand comes days ahead of a meeting of the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) that will discuss declining gas production from the KG-D6 block. The EGoM, headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, is scheduled to meet on June 9.

“We are a little worried, as there is no clarity on gas availability, while (750 Mw) Phase-III of our Kondapalli power plant will be ready by December for commissioning,” Lanco Infratech Chief Financial Officer J Suresh Kumar said.
