Tata Motors-owned British luxury brand Land Rover today launched the Discovery Sport in India at Rs 46.1 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai, pre-octroi).

The premium off-roader is the fifth model launched by Land Rover in India alongside four models already on sale from its sister brand Jaguar. The vehicle will be assembled in India at JLR’s factory in Chakan near Pune.

The new Discovery Sport will come with a 2.2 litre diesel engine generating peak power of 147 HP. The top-end version will come with 187 HP engine. A nine-speed transmission with automatic gearbox comes standard across all variants.

The four cylinder engine can push the vehicle to clock its top speed of 180kmph for the base variant and 188 kmph for the top-end version. The base variant will give mileage of 12.83kmpl while the top-end promises to deliver a mileage of 12.97kmpl. Apart from a ground clearance of 212mm the Discover Sport was a water wading depth of 600mm.

Creature comforts include auto dimming interior mirror, driver and passenger seat memory, seven airbags, auto lock and crash unlocking system to name a few. The SUV will be available in four variants – S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury.

At that price the Discovery Sport will compete against the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and Mercedes ML. The Discovery Sport borrows its design cues from more expensive models like Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport.

Reports state that this new sports utility vehicle will replace Land Rover’s aging sibling Freelander 2. Land Rover’s last launch in India was a year ago when it launched the Freelander 2 Sterling Edition in September last year.

Within five days of the opening bookings for the Discovery Sport more than 200 of it were booked, Jaguar Land Rover said in a statement released last month.

While other luxury car manufacturers like Audi, Mercedes and BMW launch models in Indian within six months of launching them globally it has taken more than a year for Land Rover to bring the Discovery Sport to India.

Land Rover vehicles are available in India through 22 authorised outlets in Ahmedabad, Aurangabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi (at Janpath & Mathura Road), Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata, Kochi, Karnal, Ludhiana, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune and Raipur.
