Hyderabad, 26 November: The L R-Sam surface-to-air missile, a part of India-Israel joint development project, has been successfully test fired for the first time from a naval platform in Israel on Thursday.

" Today's test marks the major milestone of achieving the required safety aspect of the missile system for the platform," said K Jayaraman, project director of LR-SAM and the director of the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL).

The missile, having a range of 50-70 kms, has intercepted the incoming target and destroyed it, he said.

The missile has been fitted with a dual pulse propulsion system, which was completely designed and qualified for the missile by the DRDO. It helps in enhancing the range by 1.5 times besides providing a wider envelop engagement, according to Jayaraman.

The successful test fire of the missile will clear the way for further tests of LR-SAM on our own naval platforms within India as it was meant for the use of Indian armed forces.

Jayaraman congratulated his team members and also others who have been involved in the development of the missile.
