TN relaxes power cuts for big industries, temporarily

The relaxed measures would be effective August 14 to September 30 to ensure maximum utilisation of wind energy

BS Reporter Chennai
Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (Tangedco) has decided to temporarily withdraw its 40 per cent power cut imposed against large industry.

"During peak hours the 90 per cent cut is reduced to 40 per cent cut for HT industrial and commercial services," an official release stated.

Post the order, the HT industries can now utilise grid power fully, except for the peak hours between 6 pm and 10 pm.

The relaxed measures would be effective August 14 to September 30 to ensure maximum utilisation of wind energy. R Sethuraman, director, finance and corporate affairs, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, said: "The latest order of lifting the power cut is definitely welcome although a short term relief."

Under pressure to maintain delivery schedules, Hyundai's vendors in Tamil Nadu have resorted to expensive power sources including DG sets and private power suppliers.

"The power cuts had put considerable pressure on us too, as being the largest exporter of cars from India to over 120 countries, meeting export commitments was challenging. However, the real picture would emerge once the review is completed by the end of September," he said.

Welcoming the move, Tamil Nadu Spinning Mills Association (Tasma) chief adviser K Venkatachalam said the decision would boost the industry though it was a temporary relief.

The association on Tuesday had filed a petition with the Madurai bench of Madras High Court seeking an injunction against Tangedco from enforcing forced back out of wind electric generators.
