BSY govt to come under opposition attack

Press Trust Of India Chennai/ Bangalore

The short session of Karnataka legislatures beginning here tomorrow is expected to be stormy with the 108-member strong Congress and JDS opposition gearing up to grill the B S Yeddyurappa government on a host of issues such as the farmers' suicides due to fertiliser 'scarcity'.

The fledgling BJP government would face a barrage of attacks from the Congress and JDS on the suicide by over six farmers and the death of another in police firing in Haveri.

Yeddyurappa, who took oath in the name of farmers on May 30, sporting a green shawl around his shoulders, has already been accused by the opposition of failure to ensure supply of fertilisers and sowing seeds, a charge rejected by him.

The chief minister has blamed the Centre and President's rule for the scarcity.

The Yeddyurappa ministry, which hardly has any strong parliamentarians in its ranks, will have its task cut out to counter the opposition which would pull it up on the June 10 police firing in Haveri.

The other issue that would embarrass the government is the alleged suicide of Padmpariya, wife of BJP MLA, B Raghupathy Bhat, in Delhi after she disappeared from the state under mysterious circumstances. The government was expected to be rapped by the opposition for the manner in which it handled such a sensitive case and "attempts to cover it up".
