CII workshop addresses EU's eco policies

Bs Reporter Mumbai/ Ahmedabad
To facilitate better understanding of EU's environmental policies, its business and legal needs and means, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with NetPEM Public Trust, Nagpur (an autonomous advanced research institute) and the International Council of Swedish Industry (NIR), supported by the European Commission held an international workshop.

The implications of EU Directives (REACH) on the Indian Chemical, Textile, Dyes & Pharmaceuticals Industries were discussed to enhance bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

Registration Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals REACH, as per CII, is a new pan-European chemical policy that has implications on exports of textile and other chemical and chemically embedded products to EU countries.

K P Nyati, principal adviser, CII - ITC Centre for Excellence for Sustainable Development, said under REACH, the industry would be able to generate hazard and exposure data and work on assessments suggesting necessary risk management.

"Companies would be able to get better exposure to the EU market, high vulnerability of SMEs, data generation, registration among other benefits," said Nyati.

While making a presentation on EU's environmental directives and implications on Non-EU suppliers, Shisher Kumra, Director, EU Coordination, International council of Swedish industry (NIR), Stockholm, Sweden, said EU's Environmental Policy aims at harmonisation of various standards and regulations across EU to trigger sustainable innovation.
