Flu toll in Karnataka mounts to three

Press Trust of India Bangalore

The swine flu has claimed its third victim in Karnataka, with a 28-year-old man succumbing to the disease at a private hospital here, pushing up the nationwide toll due to H1N1 virus to 24.

Manjunath, who was under treatment at the Vaidehi Medical College Hospital, died yesterday evening and his throat swab results showed he had contracted the virus, Health Department authorities told PTI.

He was admitted to the hospital on August 13 with severe cough and respiratory disorders and was on ventilator, they said.

Roopa, a 26-year-old teacher who succumbed to the pandemic on August 12, was the first swine flu victim in the state. The fever claimed another life last night when 55-year-old Shivanna, a diabetic, died at a private hospital here.

The toll in the state has risen to 3 from 1 in less than 24 hours even as Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa assured people yesterday that there was no need to panic and the situation was under control.
