Govt recommends BCs' earning over Rs 4 lakh as creamy layer

The Andhra Pradesh cabinet today recommended Rs 4 lakh as the upper limit of the annual income for backward classes (BCs) to avail of reservations in education and employment in the state.
The government will also send a letter to the Government of India requesting it to scrap the creamy layer criteria for BCs in line with SC, ST reservations in the country.
The Cabinet's decision to recommend to the Centre to consider people with an annual income of above Rs 4 lakh as creamy layer in BCs is way above the Government of India's fixation of Rs 2.5 lakh as upper limit to enforce the creamy layer principle.
Even then, the state government urged the Centre to do away with the creamy layer criteria, which was being evolved on the directions of Supreme Court in the Mandal Report case, fearing backlash from the sections concerned.
