NEC wants NE states to speed-up NEC-funded projects

The North Eastern Council (NEC) has directed all the eight states of the region to put in extra efforts for timely completion of NEC-funded projects pertaining to health and medical sector. The council had a meeting today in Shillong, where it is headquartered, with commissioners and secretaries of health and family welfare departments and other senior officials of eight North Eastern states.  

Discussing the urgent need to speed up NEC-funded healthcare projects in North-East, Ameising Luikham, secretary of NEC, said the projects that were long pending due to some or the other reason needed special focus and must be completed by the December 2014.
 

NEC funds for development and creation of infrastructure for health institutions and hospitals in the region, besides creation of infrastructure and equipment for health, paramedical and allied health institutes and for speciality and super speciality facilities in the health centres.

Presently, there are 59 on-going projects from health and medical sector in eight North Eastern states where NEC has provided funds. The list contains seven projects from Arunachal Pradesh, 12 from Assam, 10 from Manipur, five from Meghalaya, seven from Mizoram, 10 from Nagaland, five from Sikkim and three from Tripura.

The list of NEC-funded on-going projects in Assam includes Regional Dental College in Guwahati at a cost of Rs 1,310.94 lakhs, Regional College of Nursing in Guwahati at a cost of Rs 573.14 lakhs, among others.NEC was constituted in 1971 by an Act of Parliament and it claims to be the "nodal agency for the economic and social development of the North Eastern Region".
